Description The opening song for the MJ Grand Ole Opry Challenge - Texan boys aren't the only ones who are quick off the mark Dolly :) Anyway, it's July 1st here in Oz!

This was written by Ian Robins in 1972, and is the first song with a vocal I ever posted at MJ in 2005, and I'd always threatened to redo it.

Live tracks are vocals, bass, 6 string acoustic guitar, 12-string acoustic and Telecaster leads. Not live are mandolin, fiddle and banjo - drums are DoD.

I'm conscious of a high harmony that isn't there, but every time I tried to sing it I had a coughing fit, so I'm afraid you'll have to sing it yourself - a little audience participation.

Interestingly, since posting "On Reflection", I've made contact with Ian, who is alive and well and living in the mountains in B.C. Canada. I'm kind of hoping we can do something together at some stage.

Marastique lives!
Lyrics I Have Wandered
(C) Ian Robins 1972

I have wandered through this world unnoticed
and at the age of 25 I've seen it all
You've just got to have someone to keep you company
Cause there aint no point in going on alone

I've seen mountains in the north a distant purple
And I've ridden waves down where they meet the sea
My eyes have seen the western plains and rivers
And the snow-capped mountains south have captured me

Don't worry if you're down and feeling despersate
And the road you're on just makes you want to crawl
Cause it's 10:1 she's waiting round the next bend
And before you know it love has conquered all
Love has conquered all

I have wandered through this world unnoticed
and at the age of 25 I've seen it all
You've just got to have someone to keep you company
Cause there aint no point in going on alone

But of all the beauties that this land can show you
There is one place that I know can beat them all
That's the place where your own true love is standing
That's the time when you'll be standing 10 feet tall
Feeling 10 feet tall

Glad you enjoyed it my friend - the first posts for the MJGOOC have been awesome. Seems like it's going to be quite a party!
Cheers from Oz,

Yee-HaH
Neil, are you sure you're not secretly from Texas? Sheesh, you are amazing! you play so excellently and the lyrics and vocals are perfect for the "Opry. Kudos for the first entry- what an act to follow! :-)

jiguma said 144 days ago
Roxylee ..
.. now I'm blushing. I grew up listening to the Flying Burrito Brothers and Gram Parsons (et al), so it's little wonder I know my way around the genre a little. Those country loops in Logic Studio open up a whole world of opportunities. I even had a rathe cool pedal steel track worked out before I realised they don't really exist in bluegrass.
Thanks for listening and your kind comment.

The ULTIMATE...
*Southern Man* you are, Neil. I mean you are about as South as it gets down under. ;)

This is a good old-fashioned good-time knee-slapper with some really good musicianship.

I had a bit of a hard time placing the Southern accent of the singer, but decided it must be... Arkansaus. ;)

--- Joe

jiguma said 146 days ago
That southern accent :)
Yep I'm pretty far south Jim - all those southern accents sound the same to me.

Let's say my accent is that of an Australian stepping on stage for the first time at the Ryman, scared to pieces and trying to fit in :)

Thanks for listening - glad you enjoyed it.

Still my favorite
I believe this was the very first song of yours heard by my ears. It was enough to make me a fan at that point. Neil... what can I say- I just love this song... and would even if your made it into a speed metal version. Okay- might be stretching but you get the point.

It did seem like your voice was buried in the music somewhat at times.. I'd have liked it more upfront. In any case, however, a fine rendition of this great song!

Relic67 said 145 days ago
awesome!
Great sounding piece of music, fine singing and instrumentation.
Perfect kickoff to the GOOC!

8piscean8 said 145 days ago
Man.....
Gee Neil, you've been busy. This is mixed really well. I really like the addition of the mandolin, fiddle, and banjo. I can hear a high harmony part also but I am also incapable of singing such high harmonies that sound decent. This is a knee-slapper indeed! Yee-haw!!

lengold said 145 days ago

Great stuff
A toe-tappin' classic! Lovely track. The singing is great, filled with that country attitude (love that accent!), and brilliant instrumentation. Great song and a really nice arrangement. This one had me moving! Very cool. Nicely done, my friend. Peace.

jiguma said 142 days ago
Sorry, but ..
.. a general thank you will have to suffice here. I really appreciate the positive comments you have all made. Bluegrass is a favourite genre for me, and I had an absolute ball making this. Lots of the loops (banjo, fiddle and mandolin) came from Logic Studio, and I enjoyed trying to get the fit right. I also had a killer pedal steel track which is languishing on the studio floor.

The main reason I'm not able to answer each comment (which I usually try to do) is that my new iMac and Logic Studio are just too hard to leave alone. The potential is enormous (as is the learning curve). Although I'm only scraping the surface, I'm already feeling like I have a number of new directions open to me. The extensive midi drum loops will be coming to headphones or speakers near you soon (not to mention synths and strings and all sorts of goodies I've discovered).

Thanks again for the comments - I genuinely appreciate every one of them.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Reminds me of the first two Eagles albums...
...when Bernie Leadon was still in the group and a force to be reckoned with. Songs like 'Earlybird' and 'Twenty-One', which are unfortunately overlooked these latter years...

I can really hear that spot where a high harmony could go...

Neat song, nicely sung and played, and the 'artificial' instruments mesh nicely in the overall mix...

Great production my friend.

Uptempo coolness
Most of the instrumental part of this song sounds pretty authentic.

But, eh, close miking of the vocals is definitely not bluegrass. The more old-timey bands will play, both in the studio and in concert, with everyone standing around a single microphone. Your recording sounds a bit too contemporary.

But apart from that this is great stuff.
