Description After reading the poetry of Tobin James Mueller online, I contacted him and asked if I could develop some of his poems for MacJams. This is the first in a series I'm planning. I actually changed some of the words (I got his ok), edited some of them down, and added music to the background. This poem meant a great deal to me, as if it was written about myself and my own mother. (The song art are two photos of her, before and after she became old.) This version is in memory of her.
Lyrics Old.

In one day my mother grew old.

She was no longer able to hold my hand,
stroke my hair from scarred temple,
and say, in the face of all the world’s weight and disregard,
that nothing was so important as I.
She was too feeble,
too near death,
too lost in memory.

Up until then, regardless of grey and thinning hair,
regardless of wrinkles and patchy skin,
regardless of the cancer hidden beneath,
she was young in my eyes,
and I, a youth before her.

Now, she is no longer herself.
And I am no longer part
child.

Tear my heart out
My God, Del, you tear my heart out. Your straightforward
reading, yet with such depth, stuns me with its power.
And the music. I am speechless. Thank you.

It was my honor. Thank you.

This is so beautiful
Very touching. The words resonate in my soul. Thank you
for delivering Tobin's heartfelt poem to this soundstage.
How can one issue a vote for this? Is is priceless and
beyond the sphere of trivial measuring.

This is so beautiful
"...beyond the sphere of trivial measuring." As was my mother. A saint. Just
looking at her picture there at the top of the page, knowing others now see
their own mother in her, is moving to me. Thanks for your heartfelt
reactions.

Riveting!
Del - your delivery and arrangment of this very poignant yet in some ways beautiful poem, emphasizes this common theme to us all. Fantastic interpretation. Tobin - once again you've trapped an emotional moment with words... heart wrenching.

Very Moving
This poem and performance of it went "ZING!" directly to
my heart.

The words express a very real truth to many of us as we
watch our parents grow old, and it reminds us that we will
be in that place eventually, too.

The music complements the words perfectly.

Bravo, Tobin. Bravo, Del.

Thank you. Tobin deserves most of the creative vote for this. I will voice my
own "Bravo" for him too.

Del & Tobin
Time is a commodity that we all take for granted... it
passes constantly and with its passing, grow memories
that are sweet yet painful...

Straight to my heart..

This hits close to home...
Wonderful reading. What a set of pipes you have Sir.

Glorious!

You have brought a higher context to Macjams than
anything it originators ever planned.

Wow. Thanks. And, yes, this hits very close, which is why I loved it so when I
first read it. Thank you for letting it in.

Fabulous
Incredibly heart-felt reading and the piano was so, so
right. Stunning.

Una canzone triste
A Paisan who loves his Mamma.

That alone makes this submission above criticism.

Though this is a sad theme, we all know where we're heading. This is very touching. I and I guess many will identify to this.

Thank you for this moment.

The response to this setting of Tobin's poem has been overwhelming to me. I truly thank the MacJams community for all the wonderfully encouraging comments, the Admin people for such a great site, Tobin for lending me his talent and time, and my wife for giving me the space to explore something I've always admired and wanted to participate in. I'm moved too.
