Description .. a Scotsman, Englishman and an Irishman, walk into a pub .. and sing a barmaid tribute song .. it was about 'time'.

"Rosie" (the barmaid) - Caroline
APB - the drunken rabble (and the rest).

Influences: Blur "Parklife", The Small Faces "Lazy Sunday Afternoon", Bernard Cribbins "Right Said Fred", The Pogues, The Corries and celtic pop/rock like Status Quo "Burning bridges" and Slade "Runaway". A nod also to some influence from a song called "Mr.Wrong" written by Amanda Brown for the group Nobody Knows.

Lyrics Well the burn of a foreign sun,
Or the chill of our winters snow,
I'll be soaked through with rain- again
Fore it dampens Rosie's glow.

She might be fat, flat, sharp perhaps an' not a lot of that ..
... "queen of fair maidens".
A tip might raise a smile, an' for a little while .. she's a barrel of larfs ..
There's much to do, with Irn Bru, an' catchin' flu and killing time small talkin' the punters,
An' if you meet, in the street, she 'ain't so sweet, for there's no treat, in mixing work with pleasure.

Well we didn't come to talk the weather,
An' we didn't plan to steal the show- oh no,
We'll be knee deep in bloomin' heather,
Raise yer glass to our Rosie's glow, oh ho ho, a'ho ho .. a'ho ho

Slainte mhor! - (Settle down you buggers!)
Rosie dear, over here.. (What can I get you darlin'?) A pint of heavy .. er .. a guinness .. and a lager...Patrick - it's your round ..
[Och away an' shite y'bollocks]

Don't call her wench, she speaks French .. fluently ... a model to the profession
She'll fix her hair, seldom swear, I don't even care ...where my order got to...
She'll flirt and tease, with expertise, late license fees .. are well worth the money,
'Cos when she's here, serving beer, I'll never fear that my mates jokes ain't funny.

Well we didn't come to talk the weather,
An' we didn't plan to steal the show- oh no,
We'll be knee deep in bloomin' heather,
Raise yer glass to our Rosie's glow, oh ho ho, a'ho ho .. a'ho ho

One for the road .. oh bollox.

Wow, Alan
How creatively original this is! You compose so well! :-) The vocals, instrumentation, and mixing all superb, as usual. and Caro's theatrical voice is perfect for the part of Rosie.

caroline said 152 days ago
thank you my dear....
my theatrical voice had a lot of experience working in a pub!! and what could be nicer than being invited in by alan?? i know he will have a looong list of things!! :) big loves and thank you again for erm.... being you!!! xoxox

Simply WOW!!!

apb said 151 days ago
Settle down you ..

.. cheers Mark, too kind :o) Glad you enjoyed it... it started life as a bass experiment called "toss the caber"...and went downhill from there .. lol.

Hahaha...
This is sheer GENIUS! Hats off to you Alan. This is so over the top and artsy. Nice performance by the irrepressible caroline as well!

Be well friends!

caroline said 152 days ago

caroline xoxoxo

apb said 151 days ago
Steady ..

.. glad you laughed Mike ... genius .. pfft .. it's remarkably simple few chord romp .. hopefully easy to perform live .. hmm .. singing might be a bit more difficult... I was ending up coughing alot hopping between accents.

Enjoyed your coffee shop return "Entropy" btw.

apb said 152 days ago
..and..

.. I knew all those years drinking in pubs would come in handy too ;o)

Thank you very much my friend, who else could possibly be a better "Rosie".

Warren Smith said 152 days ago
incredible
Great concept, excellent production teeming with social action, grand melody, fine set of lyrics, eloquent ennunciation, humor - this song does it all ... and still comes in under two-and-a-half minutes: pretty bloody incredible!

What a bloke will do to bask in the glow : >

apb said 151 days ago
Thanks Warren ..

.. I find myself becoming more and more inspired from something conceptual these days .. and everyday social inter-actions .. this is in fact the 3rd time I've been in a pub setting for an upload at MJs (!) Twice with vocal collabs with musichead and now this one .. no stranger to the pub me.

peacepiano said 152 days ago
Cool
Very different. And very listenable. The list of influences is a nice touch. Rocking old bar tunes, or I should say new bar tunes produces a great sound. My compliments to the barmaid also :)

Thanks
Bill

caroline said 152 days ago
fank queue gov....
xoxox

apb said 151 days ago
Thanks Bill

.. no shame me... I keep updating that list since I keep coming up with other inspirations/influences... saves people guessing... it's never planned .. it's just when I sit back and listen with listener ears .. I think, who does this remind me of a bit?

J.A.Stewart said 152 days ago
Finally...
the UNADULTERATED Alan. LOL

Cool little snippet of music this is, say wot?

Dame Caroline plays her little part with convincing relish (and perhaps a wee bit of Mayo), adding to the fun.

Nice, crisp recording. Everything sounds great, BUT... it should go on and on... with a squeezebox interlude and maybe a fiddle solo. Don't stop! Don't stop. ;)

--- Joe

apb said 152 days ago
Thanks Joe

.. it's more kinda PG than unadulterated ;o)

.. of course your right about the length- just have to convince Rosie to call time later :o). Easily needs a 3rd verse .. and I agree in keeping with the layout, that it should follow a short instrumental interlude: I was toying with the idea of accordian, mandolin ... though I wouldn't say no to a fiddle either... and even a 3rd 'true' Irish male voice in the mix (as I am sadly lacking in that department .. the other two accents I have more experience of- I think).

lavalamp said 152 days ago

Sorry luv, I don't fancy beer... I prefer wine... perhaps a wee glass of Rosie' then... :-)

great!
dig the use of samples. keeps it interesting (not that this is a disinteresting track. you know what i mean.) top notch production. and those lyrics are classic!

apb said 151 days ago
I know what you mean ..

.. thanks for stopping in - that's how I discovered your fine song My time machine - anyone reading this should check that out, I recommend it.

The Freesound Project is a great source of such useful samples, I use it frequently... easy to attribute too (as required by their CC license).

apb said 151 days ago
..and .. I forgot to say ..

you might be interested to know the pub noise is in fact from a pub in Canada:

"June 16 2007 - Live at Logan's Pub; Victoria BC, Canada (See Geotag). Much like my other crowd recordings, this is the end of the evening, approximately 50 people remain of the original crowd. Ambient bar noise; People talking, finishing their drinks, and generally being drunk. Sounds of the bar staff cleaning up, bottles and glasses clinking, bands packing up their stuff."

12parsecs said 151 days ago
hehe
i think i may even have been to that bar! victoria's only a ferry ride away.

thanks, btw, for the shining endorsement. you're too kind.

A nod
to The Pogues indeed (wasn't Amamada Brown with The Go-Betweens?). Anyway, super production, playing and singing but not enough 'Rosie'

Peter

apb said 151 days ago
Thanks Peter ..

..when I came up with the concept, I thought what better than to draw on some of the quintecential pub music writer of all time .. but since Chas (& Dave) weren't around .. it had to be Shane ;o) ...

Yes, your right .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Go-Betweens .. but not the same A.Brown: she played keys and sang in a group I was in called "Nobody knows".

More Rosie .. noted .. and entirely feasible... what about a sequel?

caroline said 151 days ago
i told him that!!!
more rosie i said but all he did was chuck down another cuppa!!! thank you for your support peter - big loves as always xoxoxo

What a great song Alan
Just enjoyed your new song with Caroline as "Rosie" the Barmaid, sounds like a good old pub atmosphere and great fun.Performed well in every respect!

I was taken back in time into that atmosphere and could see all the drunkards drinking and staggering around sloshed!!

Thanks for sharing this and thanks to Caroline for her fantastic contribution as theatrical as always!!

great sound effects
It seems that you are developing a "signature sound" in which there is a LOT going on in your songs, many overlaid bits creating an intricate texture.

The lyrics, music and effects join forces to tell a vivid story of Rosie at the pub. And Caroline is a stroke of pure casting genius!

The bouncing, lilting rhythm and melody stick in my mind the same way a pint would -- catching and beguiling.

Well, I have waxed eloquently enough for one evening and belly back up to the bar....

"ROSIE! A round for all, luv!"

apb said 150 days ago
Thanks Cam
.. I am fond of using the FX from time 2 time .. other than that it's just the conventional: drums, bass, guitar, singing .. oh percussion comprising of finger-clicks, tambourine and some hand-clapping. It's not going to win any awards .. it's just a catchy pop romp. Smiling, beguiling .. like my eyes. 8o)

Round on Cam .. don't forget the nuts .. and a packet of salt n'vinager crisps ;o)

alan!
like it, as you know...

a) love the accents--distinctive, but not overwhelming--sound natural!
b) bass sounds good. not heavy or anything, but really provides movement and some grit.
c) I'd like to hear the violin-sounding stuff come up during the chorus; the first comes in at about :52.

Caroline! Gorgeous voice!

apb said 138 days ago
:o)

thanks Estella. I think your on to something .. I might adapt your c) suggestion into 'beefing up' the part you mention in the chorus (it will thus become a little louder) with some mandolin .. that acoustic guitar part there (playing the violin-esque jiggy pattern) will suit that quite well I think.

Thanks for that constructive feedback.
