This is some seriously good writing.It sounds stylistically correct- you could play this at a recital and list it as a recently discovered Handel suite.If you could add some ornamentation it would sound even better.(Don't know how hard that is to do on the computer) Amazing work- you are really talented. |

Trying not to lose count while I listen to the movements. First off, my admiration for trying to write in an old style. It's not easy to get the idioms right. (Check some of my renaissance & baroque tracks.) Prelude: I find this one the least interesting movement. You're spinning chords, but melodically not a whole lot happens. If you want to take a single figure and make a whole movement out of it, make sure it's a memorable one. Take a look at Bach's inventions, or many of the preludes from the WTC. Allemande: much better. This one actually has a melody, and you vary on it nicely.Hm. Most of these dances should have an AB strcture, where you repeat the A and B sections optionally. You seem to compose in one movement. Courante: again a lovely melody. May I remark that your playing is quite nice too? Sarabande: very nice, that slow 3/4 time. Gavotte: right off the bat, this one sounds the most authentic to me. And I love the little chromatic passing notes. The suite was getting a bit very diatonic at this point. Much needed variation! Bourr'ee: nice. I like that you pay attention to your inner voices and have some real polyphony. However, I'd like to see a bit more structure, this seems to be again a one-long-phrase movement. Loure Gigue: a fugue no less. Nice! |

Well rounded & balance pieces Very rounded, balance compositions. The metronomic MIDI (?) playing is much too rigid, and I hope you consider performing the music with a more human feel and resubmitting. I agree with Vic that the first movement is least interesting, which is unfortunate for an opening number; it pushes relentlessly and doesn't provide enough melodic content. The stately, metered manner of the following pieces is very nice. There is not enough of the breaking the rules element that I would want in a work written by a contemporary, even if you are writing to a genre. Bach, for example, almost always surprises me, even on several listenings, which I delight in. Your music is, perhaps, too predictable, too chord progression driven, and doesn't breathe as if sung. Except the Sarabande (which, I thought, could have used some Baroque style ornamentation to add a greater sense of personality to the playing) and the fugue, which I loved. The finale relies on too many eighth notes, I felt, not enough dance, not enough dotted rhythms. I have always felt that Baroque music should make you want to dance, and think. There is not enough lightness and surprise here, in both the writing and the performance, yet. |
