Description Next in my series of highlights from the youth version of Robin Hood & The Free People of The Forest: In The Great Dream. King Richard came back to England in time to save Robin and his men from execution at the hands of the Sheriff. However, in exchange, the King has demanded that Robin and his men return with him to the crusades.

The women are left behind to keep the home fires burning, among other things. Dianah (the youthful feminist responsible for suggesting revolution to the Merrie Men) learns the virtue of Marion's pacifist ways; and, she is healed. This is their duet.

ROBIN HOOD Highlights (youth version):

Too Many Years (in which the Sheriff walks among the Saxons)
Out Of The Forest (in which Robin boasts & Dianah suggests revolution)
Hail To The Sheriff (in which the Merrie Men capture the Sheriff)
Lay Your Burdens Down (in which Friar Tuck encourages the Sheriff to pay for their feast)
One Less Child (in which Robin, Marion & Dianah lament the death of Much the Miller's Son)
In The Great Dream (in which the women dream of a better way)

A couple other demos from my adult version are already posted:

Walls (in which Will Scarlet laments his life, is saved by love)
Here, For A Moment (w/ Emily Rohm) (love song between Robin & Marion)
Sweet Liberty (w/ Jessica Flood) - a song written for and performed at the Statue of Liberty dedication in the mid-80s, later folded into Robin Hood.
Lyrics IN THE GREAT DREAM

Women's Chorus:
You and I and you and I and you and I
In the Great Dream.
You and I and you and I and you and I
In the Great Dream.

Marion:
Let's wage peace
In the Great Dream.
Hate must cease
In the Great Dream.

Each must be,
In the Great Dream,
Equal and free
In the Great Dream.

There will be room for you;
There will be room for me.
If we want, we can make it happen…
It's in our reach.
No more killing;
Show them, instead, how life should be lived.
Once we're in the Great Dream
All are meant to be free! Free!

Let's wage peace
In the Great Dream.
Hate must cease
In the Great Dream.

Each must be,
In the Great Dream,
Equal and free
In the Great Dream.

All of the hurt and fear
Building from year to year;
Will the grief be passed on and on,
Will it never end?
Break the cycle…
Don't add to the pain with more of the same.
Once we're in the Great Dream
All are meant to be free! Free!

(repeate chorus)

Marion and Dianah:
You and I, now it will start, here, with us.
You and I, here with us, it can begin.
You and I. Let it start.
You and I; of one heart.

it is amazing to me that you have
access to such talented singers, musicians. But of course you are so talented I can surely see that artists are attracted to your productions because they are so dang incredibly good.

Truly these show pieces are many of Macjams best. But top notch in any place on the internet i would think.

A true delight to hear.

Superb! Bravo !!!

I follow
what Bill says. I love that delicate delightful instrumental build up before those beautiful harmonic vocals begin.... the lyrics too are a delight, voicing much of what most people in the world would want, but the execution of this production must have been hard work to say the least.... though well worth it to hear results like this, regards M

More voices and harmonies from the Robin Hood musical. Will there be a cd? The music is really special.

Thanks
Bill

Great
Love the music. It's been probably 15 years since I've been to a play, but I saw at least 50 in my teenage years, including many musicals. I can really picture this on stage, and I can't even express the nostalgia and surge of memories that come forth while listening to this. So, that's most of my listening experience here, but the music and writing sound masterful. And, as always, your quality standards are up there on another plane that I'd like to get to some day. Bravo!

Hate must cease

Reminds me a bit of Yes .
Great song , bravo to all involved !

VicDiesel said 156 days ago
Yes?
It's that "And you and I" bit that makes you think of Yes, no?

Actually, there's more to it.

HenriROGERsoloandbands said 155 days ago
Yes

Something in the music too . Hope it's a compliment :-)

This is just amazing
Having had Robin Hood many times as theme in my songs throughout the years, it's wonderful hearing your version. So many nice voices in here, all very well performed and arranged. This song fills me with happiness. I also like the guitar, as it is performed with most excellence. It's nice to be back at MACJAM's and to hear songs like this. Thank you.

production
I'm enjoying these musical numbers. Are these from a performance, or from a "cast recording"?

Good writing, and good performance.

The mix sounds a tad aggressive. A bit "everything louder than everything else". How many compressors were hurt in this production?

TobinMueller said 155 days ago
Compression
Before I posted each tune, I individually compressed and limited them to boost the volume, since songs are MUCH LOUDER in 2008 than they were in 1991 or so when I recorded them. We always had mild compression on vocals before they came into the board, and then added mild compression to the master, but any over compression you hear is my fault in trying to "update" the mp3 and boost volume in order to compare with other contemporary tracks.

These tracks are all pre-performance demos, recorded in my friend's basement studio. I used the tracks to teach subsequent casts their parts, since kids learn faster by ear than by reading music. We would record the background instrumentals first (he and I played all the parts and bounced them to about 6 tracks) and then brought in the singers. After mixing the singers, we'd have an idea of what the best instrumental mix should sound like, and then usually boost any instrument doubling the melody line to help the performers on stage find their way. We also sell the complete set of songs to directors/teachers who want to put on the show, as a full-production demo; and the background music only, as well, if they want to perform to the taped music. (I scored everything differently when we mounted an expanded version of the show off-broadway in 1995.)

Way to go!
These Robin Hood tunes have been wonderful!

I like that...
...is-it-keyboard-is-it-12-string-is-it-harpsichord instrument in the left channel...

The vocals are very clear and full, full of space, and the soloists manage to be strong and to have really nice vocal timbres... Very sweet...

I like the Arabic-meets-Old-England feel to the percussion, which lends this the feel of a dance in the round...

You know that show tunes are not my first love, Tobin, but they are plainly among your loves, and you do them very well...

I do stop by from time to time
although I don't comment often it's because I am a little afraid I'll stick my big ole foot in my mouth. Tobin you are the kind of artist that I am in awe of. Just listening to your work has elevated my ability to levels I didn't think I could reach. I always read anything you have to say on any artists you have commented on because I know there are pearls of wisdom and experience within. I have been following this series and when I can, I bring my 10 year old niece over to listen as well, she is a budding actress with a real flair for the musical side of it. She enjoys these songs very much, and when you can hold a 10 year olds attention for longer than a few minutes you know you have something. Thanks for sharing your art and expertise with us.
