Keywords shifty (1)bass (235)run (23)keys (25)
Description First tune in a while. I've added some keys to Musichead's tune "Shifty". I'm calling the tune "Bassrun" because that is the title I was working under, no better reason. Steve helped a lot by listening and commenting on some earlier versions. Let me know what you think.

I think I used the weird Fender guitar and Fender jazz bass through an Eden amp.. I think Bill and I make a great musical team...I love what you have done to this song!!! You seem to have found the sound!!!!

Steve
Thanks for letting me work with you. I know I took a long time, but I was having so much fun improvising with your track, it was hard to record and settle on an interpretation.

Thanks for listening in. Collaborating is one of the things that makes this such a fun place for listening and playing music.

Very nice stuff going on... I like the bass and cool keys in the background. Always happy when I see/hear a new post from you.

Glad you like the piece. When will we be hearing a new recording from you? Maybe you have something brewing for the coffee house :)

Dig the......
bassy element this song has. Kind reminds me of "YES", in a way.

Really dig it.

Dave

peacepiano said 161 days ago
Dave
"Yes"....I wasn't thinking that way, but I like the comparison. Part of one of their looser instrumental sections maybe.

lavalamp said 161 days ago
Looser yes
looser "Yes", yes.

Cool funky vibe
Solid bass that just begs for dancing... wicked fun sound on the keys. Naturally, I prefer songs with vocals... but this one definitely hits the sweet spot. Excellent collab, guys!

I have sung on two of my tunes. Maybe I will give it another try. Problem is, I am not much of a lyricist. I really appreciate the cool verses you pen for your songs!

Bass...bass...
...and more bass! It's impossible to not get sucked into this number because the bass is just so insistent and compelling. I do very much like the guitar licks, too, but wish the "tune" were jacked up just a bit in volume. This is such a fun number, full of movement and life. ... I'm not sure where you were going mid-way. A little disconcerting to me, but then you're back on track. Really a great listen.
Peace.

I will have to speak to Steve about the guitar and the tune. Those parts are understated on the original also. I appreciate the comments :)

Love it.

Peace Dee.

Thanks for the kind comments. Musichead started this off with such a solid idea. I was trying all sorts of things, and most of them worked.

I like the free break .
Love the bass line and the sounds .
One lil thing about the lead synth , it could play some whole notes and half notes form times to times to bring more variations.

peacepiano said 161 days ago
Henri
Thanks for the advice on the halfs and wholes. And now there are two views on the break. I'm trying to learn how to incorporate more dynamic and melodic variety in my tunes. It seems the really great tunes do it so naturally you hardly notice.

clean and great so smooth.. heavy duty bass.. I love the kind of rub on the strings goin on in the background almost like mice running around. I tell ya when this gets goin it grabs ya .. then before you know it your in a bass key heaven and boom boom back baby excellent

Good hearing from you.

I just took the time to look at your new pic. Nice!

Your keys give Steve's "Shifty" another dimension...Altogether cool! I like it!

Good to have you back in the saddle Bill!

Be well!

NorthPoint said 161 days ago
nice groove
The driving bass groove sets the mood for this tune, with a nice kbd melody on top. Nice collaboration. Cool touch at the end - thought the song was finishing, and that groove comes rolling back in...

peacepiano said 161 days ago
NorthPoint
I thought it was a bit short so I another go with the opening bass riff from Shifty. Glad you liked it!

apb said 161 days ago
Excellent ..

.really good combo. - overall I get a similar vibe (with a bit more elaborate drumming and perhaps some bongos) to some Dirty Harry film music .. "pigeon toed orange peel" club number. The bass is so 'core' but the keys really embellish the overall feel and fit perfectly. Well groovy dudes. Faved and downloaded.

Thanks for listening. Steve and I have been bouncing ideas for awhile. Good to finally get one out, especially one that really highlights Steve's bass!

Vic Holman said 161 days ago
Yes
I agree there is a touch of Yes and a cool fushion style ala Return to Forever and the likes. cool and the groove absolutely moves right along.

very nice guys!

peacepiano said 161 days ago
Vic
Return to Forever--great group. Enjoyed your comment :)

announcer said 161 days ago
It took me somewhere
but I'm not sure where. It has a familiar yet totally unique sound with the choice of instrumentation over the driving bass line.Perhaps it is the Yes comparison but it has been a long time since I heard any Yes.

At any rate I like it a lot and am happy to have spent my time listening.

As enigmatic as your comments are, they seem particularly apropos. Thanks for taking the time.

Its cool
That piano synth you have I wouldn't normally think it would work, but somehow you've managed to make it happen. Nice playing.

peacepiano said 159 days ago
Spitlogic
I don't have the latest controller with all the wheels and pads, but get good feel from piano like response and I mess with my technique to get the sounds I want.

12parsecs said 159 days ago
great tones!
great natural sounding bass tone! is that through a real or emulated eden?

love the jazzy bridge and love that "message in a bottle" chorus guitar. tasty keyboard solos. really enjoyed this listen.

musichead said 159 days ago
real amp
Its a real eden ...its a time traveler 600watt..
But for live I use a seymour duncan

timothy devine said 159 days ago
hey Bill
Sounds like this was a fun play.
Very cool groove.
I love the way you find counter melodies to go along with the bass line.
great tune.

Cool groove
Nice tones from you both - would have liked to hear more variations on the drums, but things move along quite nicely regardless.

peacepiano said 158 days ago
Jiguma
The drums are "old loops" according to Steve. I'm not a wiz at programming drums yet, so I left them alone. A real drummer would definitely raise this to a new level.

thetiler said 157 days ago
nice funky
it's kind of funny how I keep running across amazing musical sounds and each one is so different, unique and cool.

Nice choice of jazz guitar sounds with the running synth. The bass has a nice groove as the tune goes along. Nice driving-moving feel with the light airy jazz feel. Cool modern jazz, still feel when the music gets slowed. Kind of like a person walking down town shopping and sees an interesting object in the window and gets carried away looking!

Thanks for sharing and adding a new area in my listening today. Has almost a doors feel, like in the lead of light my fire. But most unique, cool jazz chord comp fade out at the end!

This is not like listening to the radio, where you know what you are going to hear! Its good to be different and still fun to listen too.

Late Miles
Bill and Steve, you have a really crisp jazz-fusion sound here that's really catchy. Nice work on creating a smooth interplay between the rolling lines of each instrument. Nobody really takes the whole show and it all flows really well.

My girlfriend has a DVD of Miles Davis playing in Germany (Berlin, I think?) in the '80's. This sounds like it could have come from the concert---very cool.

Thanks for the listen. I like the image of a Steely Dan Jam session. Yellow Jackets are cool too, I think they did a version of my all time favorite tune: Downtown!
