Keywords what with the stealing of the dreams and all (1)
Description It's been a while since I've been able to obsessively mix a tune. And then The Orbiting offered "Wake Up" to remix--for which, thank you guys!!--and I couldn't resist because Lisa's voice is always too cool to work with.

Song art is derived from a poster by Hans Erni.
Lyrics Wake up everybody,
the nightmare is coming,
while you were sleeping,
they were dreaming
a dream for you,
a dream for you,
you didn't ask them to,
you didn't ask them to,
dream it for you.

Wake up everybody,
wake up everybody.

While you were sleeping,
they were dreaming for you.
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody

Wake up
Wake up
Wake up

You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can fight together.
One and one and one is more than one.

Wake up everybody,
the world is melting.
While you were breathing,
they were stealing,
your dreams from you,
your dreams from you,
you didn't ask them to,
steal them from you.
You didn't ask them to.
While you were breathing
they were stealing from you.
Wake up.

You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can stand together.
One and one and one is more than one.

Stand up everybody,
no more acquiescing.
If you don't stop them,
you're asking them to,
asking them to,
steal from you.

Wake up everybody,
wake up everybody,
wake up everybody.

You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can stand together.
One and one and one is more than one.

Thank you, John.

This is my idea of a good time...
...one of my favorite mixing ears bringing his chops to one of my favorite duos...

This ends up being headphones candy. I think I have to get cans with a third earphone to get the full effect...

I like the Eastern vibe in the percussion, the instrumentation, and some of the ways that Lisa is using her voice....

Ed

perceptualvortex said 216 days ago
Thanks, Ed
It was a good time mixing it too.

ledebutant said 216 days ago
What I love
Is that Ed doesn't have to get a third ear for that third headphone. What isn't he telling us?

Feter said 216 days ago

I agree, I love the sound of that viola, and I like the way it complements Lisa's singing. I'm glad you like this Feter, thank you.

Thanks for grabbing a copy, Neil, and for your vote of confidence. I hope you're enjoying this!

Man Oh Man!
I have to admit, I've been holding my breath since you said you were doing one of these, filled with excitement over what you'd imagine up and you did NOT disappoint. This is super-trippy and incredibly dark, darker than you usually do and you've brought out flavors in the vocal that I hadn't pictured (as Ed said, the Eastern vibe is very, very cool).

I could not love that viola more or the chimes behind it or the bassline or some of those incredible Gleetchlab sounds. The sirens are a great idea. You've also made me realize that I'm way over the top with the remix I'm doing and that it doesn't have to be crazy to be interesing.

It goes without saying that the mix is incredible and I feel almost as though I'm moving through a really dark carnival ride and the image from the photo is looming out here and there.

I couldn't love it more and I'm sure Matt will love it, too.

Thank you, David!!! Thank you, thank you!

perceptualvortex said 216 days ago
Lisa
...I keep hearing your voice, over and over...
You're welcome! No, wait, thank YOU; this song was exactly the inspiration I needed to hit the virtual mixing board. And I had a lot of obsessive, distracting hours of making lovely music, and it's because of your voice.

I'm very pleased with how this one turned out, and I'm glad you are too. Thank you and Matt for letting us remixing types take a shot at this great song. You rock, Lisa!

David, this is an amazing remix of Orbiting's original. Great eastern flavor and a true remarkable sounds you added... This is a true masterpiece. Happy to hear a new tune from you, this piece made my day!

wow
what a remix. sounds amazing, i am really impressed by the subtle gleetchlab stuff. it's hard to be subtle with that one. really great take on this.

perceptualvortex said 215 days ago
michael
Thanks, man. Gleetchlab was really good for mixing up the sounds of the bells; I did go a little crazy with Gleetchlab, like usual, but the crazier stuff didn't get into this song. Listen for them in my next release, haha.

guitapick said 216 days ago
Music...
...fits the lyrics...

...to a "t"...

sweet...and incredibly menacing...

perceptualvortex said 215 days ago
guitapick
Thank you. I think the lyrics (aside from the 'you and I' parts) really are kind of menacing, so I'm glad you picked up on my reflection of that.

drakonis said 216 days ago
trippy
from the dark to the light... and the light is not the light we are used to... it is just a brighter darkness... the middle-eastern tinged violin creates a really "slinky" feel that touches on the obscene... and that, coupled with Lisa's wonderfully smooth singing really makes this an indelible mix. As always, mixed and drummed to perfection. TWO-dos Kudos!
ttfn,
Drakonis

perceptualvortex said 215 days ago
Eduard
Funny, I hadn't thought of the viola as 'slinky'... until now, haha. But I hear what you mean. Thanks for listening and the kind words, drakonis.

Very nice to the ears, really enjoyed this track. Well composed and arranged, esp like the strong bass. Nice one.

perceptualvortex said 215 days ago
Diviner
I'm glad you enjoyed this, man, thank you for checking it out. The bass is made of Bass on Demand loops, which I've gotten a surprising amount of mileage from--they are diverse and versatile.

Diviner said 210 days ago

Might just check it out. Cheers.

Beautifully trippy. I can see the attention to detail. The echo on the voice really works - sounds a little like Lacuna Coil. Great.

Thanks for listening, Mr. Bacon, I'm glad you like it. I will check out Lacuna Coil.

Yes, Lisa's voice is the star here; I love the haunting, chant-like way she's singing. The bass is assembled from Bass on Demand loops, which I've been getting a lot of mileage from. Thank you, lavalamp.

King Crimson is always a welcome comparison
Thanks ego... I know, I haven't been very musical lately! Glad you like that bass; I spent a lot of time trying to get a good bassline for this, piecing together Bass on Demand loops. Thanks for checking this out.

Ha ha...
Wow David...this is AMAZING!

Lisa always sounds great, but you have accented and framed her vox in a way that is at once mystical and sensual.

Beautiful job on the soundbed as well. Immaculate mixing job throughout!

Bravo and encore!

Be well friend!

Macaudion said 213 days ago
And now, I be hip by association...
The beginning of this little tunage had my tummy rumbling w/ the type of excitement in anticipation that posed the question, "now how's he gonna top this"...

I miss you, Dude!

...it felt as if I was being tossed, (quite artfullY in a forward direction through these other worldly states by a meticulous beating of drums... - the synth and cello action... - diggin how it was relentless in trying to roll my psychy onto it's edge - most of the fun was in trying to roll things back to upright while holding onto my ears for dear life - all the while though, ya gotta know that I was dong a head bob that would have onlookers know that, yup, I am indeed, a hip and cool being!

Homey's mindful and, fairly striking words are set in the scene of a pretty wonderful little musical nightmare...

The two of you as "head designers" of my wake-sleep dream state..., a bit of a stretch for my imagination, though, I gather that this is a goal that is clearly stated somewhere in the SMALL PRINT of your "mission statement" - LOL - my stumbling little brain cells are reporting w/ a smile, mission accomplished....

High five'n yas! Glad to hear you're back, David. Big time!! Macca

perceptualvortex said 207 days ago
Macca
Hey man, thanks for welcoming me back. My songs aren't done being posted until I get one of your comments, because I love reading your impressions. Whether or not you paid attention to the Small Print (tm), I'm glad it's mission accomplished for your smiling brain cells, haha. Thanks for stopping by, Dion, now it's your turn for a new tune!

Drew Kopr said 213 days ago
Cool!
Dave, great stuff! This version offers very nice additions to the tune, in my opinion, and it is great to see you post since it has been awhile. Hope your creative energy results in some more postings soon my friend!

perceptualvortex said 207 days ago
Drew
Thanks, Drew, I'm glad you like this version. Yes, I really need to get mixing songs more often... I've been feeling in the musical wastelands for a while, not being able to come up with any ideas. Then this came along and jostled awake my muse, which is great. Good to hear from you!

bud said 213 days ago
OK - my next listen is on phones

VicDiesel said 212 days ago
Great song
Ok, you have great basic material here to work with in the original track, but your contributions are nothing to be sneezed at either. It all sounds fantastic.

Just one question: where on earth did you use Gleetchlab? I don't hear much glitchy stuff.

perceptualvortex said 212 days ago
Vic
I used Gleetchlab on the bells and chimes; I layered them and varied their speed (slowing them down, mostly). Kind of a lightweight use of the program, but it was the effect I was looking for. I also tried a bunch of other soundsperiments with Gleetchlab, but only wound up using a few of the bell tracks that I made. I'm glad you dug this, Vic, thanks.

alfalpha said 210 days ago
why am I...
...not surprised that this is so brilliant.
David, you have this 'knack' with remixes- you always manage to capture
the 'soul' of a song via your creativity, as well as capturing my attention!
Cheers & Regards,
Alf

Good to see you alfalpha
Thanks for the kind words, Alf. I'm glad you like my remixes!

sloparts said 208 days ago
Started out a little slow for me,
but was interesting enough to keep me listening. Now I'm very glad I did. This just shines with dark emotions and glistens with raw power that is only being held in check by Lisa's haunting vocal. A very moving piece of music, Great collab you two.

Very enjoyable listen Dave, thanks for sharing, and for the iPod food.

Be cool man,

Ed

perceptualvortex said 205 days ago
Ed
I too am glad you kept listening, and I'm glad you like this! Yeah, slow... this is the slowest song I've ever mixed, I think, and I had to resist the strong urge to start the tune with powerful drums (see: all my other tracks, haha). But I managed to get those drums in there eventually. I appreciate your comment, thank you for listening, Ed.

This is mega-cool,
maybe my favorite of the Wake Up remixes. It propels very nicely and the bass line is wicked awesome.

Bob6stringer said 107 days ago
Wizardly!
To compliment the vox and the mix would be understating the obvious. Deep groove and never lapses into goth-macabre despite the themes touched upon.
