Description okay, i still can't hear but i had to do something (going nuts over here). this is based on a piece that gregb sent me; his original piece was (in Greg's words):" a duet for piano and marimba a while back and I've been working on cutting it up and making an electro-acoustic theme and variations."

i sliced up the piano and put a ton of effects on it, and added granulation to a copy of the marimba track. all of the source material here came directly from Greg's files that he sent me. here's the original"
http://www.macjams.com/song/43415

I can't really hear anything but high frequencies right now, so i mixed it using the EQ visualizer. if this sounds terrible, let me know. Greg's version is a thing of beauty, whereas mine is experimenting with different effects and slicing stuff up. Hope you approve Greg, if not... well there's always next time.

I haven't heard
Greg's original, so no idea how this compares, but as a piece in itself, it works very well to my ears. a sense of an almost disturbing intelligence behind the sounds. Short and beautiful in a stark way. Very cool. Hope the ear thing clears up soon, my friend. Be well. Peace.

thanks Dajama
glad you enjoyed. i had fun playing with the sounds.

Moviz said 171 days ago
Well...
It's NOT 'beautiful' LOL (is that the bad news?), but it's very interesting (that must be good news), no-one would ever guess there was a piano in there, but I do get a hint of the marimba sort of breathy-fied from time to time. Would be good as a backdrop for a psychological thriller maybe, cheers M

michael2 said 171 days ago
thanks for listening
Moviz. the piano is the thing that kind of sounds like a cross between a synth and a guitar. the marimba has one track running through a granular synth, one track is as is, and the other was reversed, had some reverb added and then reversed again. thanks for listening and watch out for Greg's version.

Greg's Theme
Hmmm I do remember heard greg's way back ...still
I think you did a nice job with coming with something
spheric with all this ...great work Michael !!!!!

Very Provocative!
I like the effects and overall sound in this one. Transports me to distant places!

michael2 said 170 days ago
thanks Lunatrick
glad you appreciate. you should do a variation on this. would love to hear your take on it, with your classical background it could be really interesting. thanks for listening.

rsorensen said 170 days ago
nope doesn't sound terrible at all
definitely some cool stuff going on in this. great use of the reverse reverb. Really like when it picks up for a bit at 1:15. Did you try adding a beat to this at all? might be tricky...
So what's wrong with your hearing??

michael2 said 170 days ago
hey thanks
for listening. i have an ear infection, so my hearing is similar yo what you hear when you are swimming underwater.

it's funny you mentioned a beat. i kept hearing this in my head as Zappa would have done it (or Primus); but the challenge Greg laid down was to just use the marimba and piano files he sent. i guess i probably could have put together a "drum kit" from these sounds, but i wS getting into chopping apart and mangling the piano.

UFO Piano
Michael, what did you to the piano track? I love the sound you pulled out of it. Approval granted, as if there was a doubt.

Here's the original recording with five or six variations attached: Duet No. 2 Variations.

michael2 said 170 days ago
hey greg
thanks man. reversed the piano and then chopped it up, there is a track going through supatrigga, and then there is another track that I fed a snippet into a sampler and messed with the envelopes and added some delay, then played live. it turned into a neat sound I think. thanks this was much fun for me to play with.

to bad you can't hear...
...what you did here, for now.

the backing track behind the marimba is really cool in all the sonic details that come out. Cool trip out piece Michael.

And you've better have seen a doc about the hearing issue

Thinking about clipping my ears...
...if this is what you get to be able to do...

Man!... A trip without the side effects (I hear side effects are no fun - that's what I heard)

I don't really have a reality based reference for what I'm hearing and maybe since you can't hear, that' how you arrived here?... Curious....

Pretty exciting little joyride! Thanks M2! Sorry to hear about your ears. Truly.

Thanks for the trip! Macca

Another KT fan, I see
I've long used the KT granulator left and right to spice up tracks. But I wouldn't dream of using it without being able to hear the results accurately. It's not something trivial like an EQ or a compressor.

But your results sound just fine. A very intresting sonic exploration. It's quite pleasant, in fact.

Hope your ears come back to normal quickly. Otherwise you'll be reduced to making music for birds and dogs!

michael2 said 166 days ago
thanks vic
glad you liked. KT is aweome, you can do so many neat things with it. saw you on KVR the other day trying to coach someone with a mac question. whatta guy.

Macaudion said 163 days ago
Sigh...
I can't listen here unless I can download it, so I'll get back to it either tonight or tomorrow a.m., M2. Sorry 'bout that! Peace - Macca

This is BRILLIANT!!!
Can't get enough. So subtle but infectious. Love how you get every synth working to their max and nothing covered up. SUPERB! Great collab guys! Only wish is was longer. A lot longer.

Great track
Lovely piece of experimental music. Love the layers, rhythms and melodies that are stretched and played about with. Really cool track Michael.

ic42 said 154 days ago
it is arresting
it is a very unusual effect. it is not sampled backward? is it kt granulator that affects the marimba with a soft attack? it is a world full of so many things to learn. thank you for the new sounds. 0x0

wow!
you weren't kidding. i went to hear greg's piece, and it really is a thing of beauty! thanks for turning me on to that.

Your piece, I love as well. I wish I had the talent to take inspiration from that, and with a handicapped ear, too!

I like that feter called it spheric. I agree. Greg's panning made me feel like I was literally tussled inside his static/boop boop world, like the listener is the ghost instrument in his composition (brilliant!), and I like that you kept elements of that by making your piece something that surround the listener.

I love your ending!
