Keywords Wake Up (6)The Orbiting (23)RG Paddler (44)
Description I took the oppurtunity to remix the excellent song
'wake up' by The Orbiting in response to their forum post.

I dont have garageband so I imported the .band file into itunes as aiffs and exported em to an old version of cubase LE for mac os x 10.2 that came free with an Alesis multimix 8 mixer i bought - its plug n play except it doesnt plug on my old mac - just plays but thats good enough for me.I wasnt familiar with cubase so it was a good excersise tryin to mix up this tune - I had no idea what I was doing and just shuffled blocks of sound around until they seemed to fit.At this point I hadnt heard the original so it was interesting to see the complete contrast when I finally did - pretty mashed up I guess

The tempo I found to be at about 80 bpm I think but some really interesting sounds there by Matt and great vocals by Lisa - thanks very much.

I dont normally wear a suit but thought I'd make the effort for a change - couldnt get rid of the horn though.

Regards - Richard Gray aka RG Paddler
Lyrics Wake up everybody,
the nightmare is coming,
while you were sleeping,
they were dreaming
a dream for you,
a dream for you,
you didn't ask them to,
you didn't ask them to,
dream it for you.

Wake up everybody,
wake up everybody.

While you were sleeping,
they were dreaming for you.
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody

Wake up
Wake up
Wake up

You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can fight together.
One and one and one is more than one.

Wake up everybody,
the world is melting.
While you were breathing,
they were stealing,
your dreams from you,
your dreams from you,
you didn't ask them to,
steal them from you.
You didn't ask them to.
While you were breathing
they were stealing from you.
Wake up.

You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can stand together.
One and one and one is more than one.

Stand up everybody,
no more acquiescing.
If you don't stop them,
you're asking them to,
asking them to,
steal from you.

Wake up everybody,
wake up everybody,
wake up everybody.

You and I can fight the darkness,
you and I don't have to fight alone
you and I can stand together.
One and one and one is more than one.

Wake up everybody

Wow Richard - nice job! I understood almost nothing in your description of how you did this, but it sure turned out impressively well! You look nice in a suit!

I love you!!
Oh you should see my face! I'm so happy.

I have to go and cook the dinner, but I'll be listening to this on repeat. Because I know this song so well, I want to comment properly on the things you specifically brought to it and I need more time. Back in a little while.

I am a man in metaporphosis
thats ok - i live in a high rise flat and while we are bombarded with a milllion tourists today a thai girl is cooking chille on the bottom flooor while er usband smokes out the window - and slams it every half hour.and my room tho the window is open is like a microwave oven - thats why I'm such a layabout

Still I think britain is getting better at losing money so it cant all be bad

But what...
...happened to that couple arguing in the kitchen when you wanted to make toast from the other day?

Big Long List of Love
I think it's so cool how you did this, first that you didn't listen to the original before you got started and that you worked with a big pile of aiffs and sorted through to find things that interested you, then added all of your own fabulous keyboard work and production. I might be wrong, but it feels like you added percussion, too, but it might be that you brought the percussion from the end of the original song and used it earlier. I wasn't really sure how I'd go about doing a remix if I wanted to, because I know the song too well, but a big pile of aiffs outside a GB file would go a long way towards fixing that issue.

The suit suits you, but thank goodness you didn't lose that horn. This version really swings and I love you for that, because you've helped me imagine that maybe I could sing something funky one day and pull it off. You've made me retroactively funky, which is no mean feat. I LOVE the production on the vocals, the trailing lines, the use of the spoken bridge in the background at times. The production overall is just masterly, actually. You're working a lot of layers, here (tremelo rules, you know it). The dynamics are really creative, but the song always flows beautifully.

Then of course, comes the patented super-wonderful RGPaddler keyboard magic. The Rhodes sound is very, very cool on this and swirls together nicely with everything else. It's interesting because that sound is cropping up on more contemporary music, but it's also such a retro sound, and I saw this song as being a contemporary protest song ala the 60's, so that Rhodes plays into my original vision of retro/contemporary really terrifically.

I couldn't be more thrilled with what you've done here, Richard, you even brought out my noisy electric riff that was just a minor background player in the last one, which is fun for me!

Hooray, you're a genius and I've listened to this more than ten times already! Thank you.

P.S.
The song art is wonderful. I love seeing your little face in the corner of my iPod. I think I'll still be giggling years from now.

This is great. Man I have to resist the urge to listen to these remixes until I get mine going... this one's too good!

I loved the original so much, and you've done an amazing job in giving it a different feel (more organic perhaps?) - certainly standing front and centre on the stage with The Orbiting's original (well, slightly back a tiny bit).

A brave person who messes with such a lovely original - well done!

Very cool track
It has been cleverly layered and it sounds very good. The effects on the vocals are very nice, and gives it an etheral edge. The music you have created for the is really nice and mixes well with the track. You have certainly laid down a high benchmark.

Excellent production here. Really Pro sounding. I'll have to tip my hat to you.

Great Remix
I love your trademark Rhodes in there and the forward push in the percussion. The variety of dynamics and the pristine production. Nice.

Oh yeah!
In reading Ledeb's comment for my remix of this song, she mentions your version, and so I checked it out and remembered "Ah yes! That one!" I'm glad I didn't hear this before I did my mix. I may not have done it at all: this one is awesome. I too didn't listen to the original before I remixed (at least not the whole thing) But yeah, the production and arranging here smokes! Good work!
