Description I made a beat about a week ago and sent it to Nightshade Syndicate, he played with and added some stuff and posted it as Binary Vomit. His was more downbeat sounding. I still had the beat around and decided to try and make a dub song from it. I really love dub but have never tried to do it. I almost hesitate to put it under the dub genre as the drums are just weird, but i did put a reggae bass line over it. it should probably go under experimental, but my wife heard me doing it and just thought i was listening to "your crazy dub music."

The vox are from the freesound project, and in keeping with "dub not dub" concept, I used a field recording of a turkish man singing on a boat. I liked his voice and was able to work it into the song somehow. heres the freesound attribution:

michael2: it's my version of Dub
biba_nova: m2 - dub???
biba_nova: yes it is dub
biba_nova: takes me back to england
biba_nova: late 70s/early 80s
biba_nova: also reminiscent of holgaer czukays track 'persian love'
biba_nova: very nice

hey bryn
thanks for listening. this was really fun for me, glad you approve.

bud said 183 days ago
Rub a dub dub
a Turkish man in a tub. Dig this different take on the genre - totally get it. Nice bass.

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks Bud
glad you liked. computers are so cool, would have taken me forever to do this on tape.

Rebsie said 183 days ago
Weird in a good way
The vocal sample does merge and mesh perfectly with the bass and drum (and yes he does have a nice voice). Very creative, you should do more like this!

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks Rebsie
this was a blast for me, I love working with found stuff. maybe I'll do dub remixes of all my songs (god, that would be ghastly). glad you approved and thanks for listening.

thoddi said 183 days ago
eastern
Cool groove. The blend with the eastern influenced melody and the reggae bass makes it pretty original. Me like:)

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks thoddi
glad you like. i heard that recording of the vocals, and had to use it. he's got such a cool voice. the rest was pure experimentation. thanks for listening.

lavalamp said 183 days ago
Wild
Weird, wild, rebellious, radical, rolling, rabid, ridiculous, did I say wild?

Was this played in Asian Minor?

LL

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks lavalamp
glad you gave it a listen. i love all things psychedelic, and this makes my head spin. thanks for listening.

Turkish Boat Ride
what a project ..totaly new to Michael sound ..
good experiment my friend !!

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks Feter
glad you found it new; i always want to experiment with different things. now if i could only speak turkish and translate what he's sing. i think you're voice would be great in a dub mix as well. thanks for listening.

Vic Holman said 183 days ago
what a trip
the whole thing is really well done. So much to like here. The bass line is killer and grooves over the drum track. neat use on the delays. the whole thing is pretty cerebral.

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks vic
this was a good time for me, i love reggae, dub, electronics and psych; so i got a chance to play around with all of them. delay makes everything more fun.

Elevator_Funk said 183 days ago
....
quite groovy. You can't go wrong with dub, the vox were pretty cool over that track too. good find.

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks man
you're right about dub: it's totally addictive. i may have to try my hand at a more traditional sounding cub mix one of these days. thanks so much for listening.

rsorensen said 183 days ago
boom boom boooom
awesome bassline. reminds me a little of when big sugar experimented with dub, but this is much cooler. this is great michael. i love the big bassy mix.

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks
isn't playing with sound the best fun ever? i like the bass too. never heard Big Sugar, but i'll be checking them out. thanks for the listen (and support).

spitlogic said 183 days ago
hehe
Nice man. I can see this as dub.

michael2 said 183 days ago
thanks spitlogic
glad you liked. although not really dub, it's my take on it. dubs kind of like hip hop for me; i love it, but i would feel silly trying to do a true to form take on it. feel like it would be really forced and lame sounding. i may try another track in this style with one of your accapellas if you don't mind.

spitlogic said 182 days ago
have at it
I would love to see what you come up with.

dajama said 183 days ago
Very cool
I love the bass on this. Really effective use of the vocal sample. This reminds me of London, especially when I lived in Peckham and used to frequent bars that played a lot of this kind of music. Very nicely done. SOunds like dub to me. Cool. Peace.

michael2 said 181 days ago
thanks dajama
a little trip down memory lane huh? that's cool. glad you approved.

You're so imaginative Michael, sometimes it's scary! If I had as much creativity as you have in your little finger......well, you know how that goes!

michael2 said 181 days ago
thanks karen
you have the technique to die for, i am simpling willing to look foolish in public. thanks so much for your kind words.

LunaTrick said 182 days ago
Love it Michael...
Reminds be of DCD and Vas - but more electronica. I'm really interested in arabic microtonal, raggas, etc. so this sort of music is a treat!

michael2 said 181 days ago
lunatrick
thanks for the listen, glad it captured your attention. there is some amazing middle eastern music out there, i am really into this one guy Muslim Gauze who does electronic music with seriously honest middle eastern folk influences. he does it all live too (guess he has something against sequencers). thanks for checking it out and for your kind words.

tokai said 182 days ago
Ace tune
really like this one. Fantastic laid back vibe but with a real heavy sound. You did a very good job on the vox considering the source.

michael2 said 181 days ago
thanks tokai
you've got great taste in music, so i will definitely accept the compliment. thanks so much for checking it out.

yrp said 182 days ago
i
think this is very good, Michael.I dont know a thing about dub but this sound very enjoyable to my ears.A Cool and groovy bassline. I also enjoyed the asian flavour due to the sampling.
Congratulations, my good friend.

PS:Thanks for reminding me of the free samples website.

michael2 said 181 days ago
thanks Carlos
glad you liked. freesound project is awesome huh?

perceptualvortex said 181 days ago
Yep
That singing is great. I really like the beats and floating background noises too.

michael2 said 181 days ago
thanks PV
the noises are a car that i toyed with in a sampler; just discovered the joys of sampling, now i need to get a digital field recorder. so glad you liked this one, wasn't sure if anyone would get into it.

perceptualvortex said 180 days ago
Field recording
I've been thinking I need a digital field recorder... let me know if you get one that you like!

ledebutant said 178 days ago
Field Recorder
illuminati got one the other day that he loves and it wasn't expensive. I should ask him what it was.

michael2 said 178 days ago
was
was it one of those Zoom recorders. they are supposed to be pertty good at only $199. that's $199 more than I can afford right now.

ledebutant said 176 days ago
No
It was way, way cheaper. I'll ask him.

Shadowofnine said 181 days ago

Bass, this simply rocks if ya know what I mean...

michael2 said 181 days ago
thanks
was just checking out your page, some really cool stuff going on there. thanks for giving my tune a listen.

Moviz said 180 days ago
Very
atmospheric and mysterious sounding. Great mix of sounds and the nice voice really does add to it all..... lot's of mental visuals to this, cheers M

mikkinylund said 180 days ago
Wow
This is heavy, like it! Kind of psychedelic in some ways, floating, flying, diving... The bass is awesome! Woh!

Lennon714 said 180 days ago
Very Cool
You always seem to throw together very interesting peices. They're unique pieces, but they're not bizarre for weirdness sake. It's like you find a bunch of unrelated bits and make them work in unison. Love it. It might be my junky work speakers, but I'd like to hear more of that bass.

michael2 said 180 days ago
thanks
glad you like the song (and my haphazard approach). i think it must be your work speakers though, the bass is pretty cranking. thanbks so much for listening.

egobandit1 said 180 days ago

arabs from turkey hangin with the rasta man excellent!

Outtaorbit said 180 days ago
This is really cool
the whole time I'm listening to this .. a rap to { a} doors song from la. women is going on in my brain. a vital part of the body which is never caught doing 2 things at once in any case.
d/L.. nicely done

very cool sounds going on here, you did some great stuff with that vocal track you found. this is very creative. nice beat. it's pretty darn cool, something different. Thanks!

Macaudion said 179 days ago
You... sir...
Awesome job, Michael! You know how to capture attention, and then, you do interesting things w/ it while in your possession! Always something neat goin on at your place.

Thanks for the ride! Macca

Dude
Seriously, what can you not do? I really enjoyed this a lot. It reminds me of something off an updated version of Zenyatta Mondatta and I could actually imagine you going crazier with it even. I've been listening to this quite a bit over the last two days and have moved it over to my illustrious iTunes Best of MJ playlist.

Dj French Toast said 168 days ago
Dude you
really are a frickin sound making genius dude ! This is so frickin clever and well done . Love all the sounds and there meshing . Indeed bad ass man !

Heightened said 163 days ago
Loved it!
I'm sick with envy. Bugger! Of course this music will sooth my selfish pride.

Diviner said 161 days ago
Really good modern dub
Very impressed esp since its a genre that you have never tried. The music is very good and the vocals in the track have been well used. I too like my dub (and find it hard to do, although most of my tracks have dub influences), and you have done really well, its a really good track.

estellie said 141 days ago
wow--
this stopped me in my tracks.

I don't know what dub is, so I'm speaking from the intrinsic value I found in it, and not how it may or may not relate to any genre.

I wish I had the skills to play with found art the way you have here.

I like it!
