Description
While I work on other projects, I will be posting a series of highlights from the youth version of
Robin Hood & The Free People of The Forest
. I wrote 2 other versions of this show, one which ran off-broadway for 10 months ("Freedom's First Light") and one that I toured with for a few years. The version I'm sharing is the initial version performed by kids between 5 and 17 years of age, plus I sing the part of Robin Hood on a few tracks (cuz the recordings were pre-opening demos and the 14-year old kid cast as Robin, shown in the photo wearing green, wasn't yet up to snuff when we went into the studio).
The little boy to the left in this photo is my 5-year old son, Willie, who played Much The Miller's Son - an orphan Little John takes in (to redeem himself for killing a man by accident, not knowing his own strength, which is how he became an Outlaw). Much's parents were murdered because they ground flour using the King's mill and then used some of it themselves, which was against Norman law. All of the Merrie Men had similar stories: forced into being outlaws by doing things just to survive. Dianah is a young woman who runs away from home because she is sold to Lord Gisbourne, a known nasty man. So she joins the MM and foments revolution... Without Dianah, they would've just been a bunch of guys who liked to hunt and fish and drink ale - or so my version goes.
ROBIN HOOD Highlights (youth version):
Too Many Years
(in which the Sheriff walks among the Saxons)
Out Of The Forest
(in which Robin boasts & Dianah suggests revolution)
Hail To The Sheriff
(in which the Merrie Men capture the Sheriff)
Lay Your Burdens Down
(in which Friar Tuck encourages the Sheriff to pay for their feast)
One Less Child
(in which Robin, Marion & Dianah lament the death of Much the Miller's Son)
In The Great Dream
(in which the women, left behind, dream of a better way)
A couple other demos from my adult version are already posted:
Walls
(in which Will Scarlet laments his life, is saved by love)
Here, For A Moment
(w/ Emily Rohm) (love song between Robin & Marion)
Sweet Liberty
(w/ Jessica Flood) - a song written for and performed at the Statue of Liberty dedication in the mid-80s, later folded into Robin Hood.
Lyrics
OUT OF THE FOREST
Merrie Men:
We're Freemen, all,
Beyond the law,
We heed the call of Robin Hood. Robin Hood!
Before us all
The mighty fall,
The weak stand tall with Robin Hood. Robin…
We decide who comes and goes here, deep inside the forest.
We choose who will live and die here, deep inside the forest.
We take ev'rything we need here, deep inside the forest.
Each of us is his own king here, deep inside the forest. Forest!
Robin Hood:
If you want to travel on our turf just be my guest.
We can treat you to a party, leave you quite impressed.
We can guarantee that you'll be dining with the best.
Merrie Men: We can rumble, we can tumble with the best.
Robin Hood: We'll put on a show that shames and outshines all the rest.
Merrie Men: We can hustle, we can rustle all the rest.
Robin Hood: Think you can refuse? Put us to the test.
Merrie Men: Don't refuse us, you'll just put us to the test.
Robin Hood: Think you're being used? There'll be no arrest.
Merrie Men: We don't worry, we know there'll be no arrest.
Robin Hood: Then you'll foot the bill, we know in us you will invest.
Merrie Men: When it's over, we know that you will invest.
Robin Hood: But you won't complain; you'll think that you have just been blest.
Merrie Men: We will make you think that you have just been blest.
All:
We're Freemen, all,
Beyond the law,
We heed the call of Robin Hood. Robin Hood!
Before us all
The mighty fall,
The weak stand tall with Robin Hood. Robin…
Robin Hood: Follow me.
Merrie Men:
We can rumble, we can tumble with the best.
We can hustle, we can rustle all the rest.
We don't worry, we know there'll be no arrest.
When it's over, we know that you will invest.
We know when it's over you'll discover that you will invest.
Dianah:
Wait! Can't you hear it now, see it now?
It can begin: We can make all men free,
not just you and me. We can begin. In the
countryside, cities wide. It can begin. Make our
contribution a revolution.
Merrie Men:
Come out of the forest, we can start a revolution.
Free! Free! Free! Free!
We can stand for all men to be
Free!
We're Freemen, all,
Beyond the law,
We heed the call of Robin Hood. Robin Hood!
Before us all
The mighty fall,
The weak stand tall with Robin Hood. Robin…
Come out of the forest, yeah.
Come out of the forest, now!

Stirring stuff!
Very rousing music and performance - although we're just getting the music here this seems like an excellent piece of music theatre.
