Keywords Armed Robber (1)Cricket (3)Campaign (1)1970's (4)London (3)
Description Not sure how this song will translate outside the UK - George Davis was an armed robber. However, he is probably most famous because of the extraordinary lengths some of his supporters went to protesting his innocence. Try typing George Davis into Google - there are quite a few links or read the one below.

This was 'thrown together' as part of the CBGB's challenge.

Thank you
for the compliments on the guitar work - I found this quite difficult to play.

I recorded a few songs for CBGB's, so I will post the remaining over the next couple of weeks - this other two are far more punky!

All the best - I look forward to new music from you when you can fit it in with your studies (which I hope are going well).

George Davis Is Innocent
I like it .great chords sequence .I can imagen
this came from a later mersybeats sound or early
80s this style is tricky and new ..loved your singin !
nice work my friend thnx for sharin !!

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
Thanks Feter
I really struggled playing the chord sequence on this one - this was the best of several takes - and although none of the chords are difficult to play, they're all barre chords played quite high up the neck and it was killing my arm!

Recorded in the spirit of CBGB's, so I didn't wanted to keep this one simple.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Cool and bouncy
Good tune Peter....almost got a kind of punky/ska feel to it!
So...was he innocent then?

S

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
That's good
as that's the sort of feel I was trying to get. The believe that Sham 69 did a song with the same title - although I've never (knowingly) heard it! It seemed like a great topic for a punky number. As for if he was/wasn't innocent - my Dad always said "He might not be guilty this time but he's a right crook" Evidence seems to suggest that there some some doubt and he's still trying to clear his name...

Thanks for listening as ever

Love
how you use topical subjects for your lyrics and you get your message across with style and in this case an amount of force. Great performance as always, cheers M

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
I do try
and keep my songs 'everyday'. Although this was rather a long time ago, it one of those cases that made quite an impression on me and came up by chance in conversation with some friends a few weeks ago. I used to see the bridge on the Old Kent Road when I used to go to my local record library - I guess the bridge is still there... Those were the days!

Thanks for listening
Peter

lengold said 241 days ago
Very interesting
subject matter Peter - I'm sure I've seen that bridge, where is it?
I remember all that stuff going on.
Really catchy song and very well performed - I think your vocals are sounding particularly good.
Cheers
Len

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
I believe
the bridge is at Bow Common Lane - I remember one on the Old Kent Road and my wife remembers one in Eltham - I suspect it was quite widespread in South/East London. It was quite a campaign culminating in digging up and pouring oil on the cricket ground in Headingly preventing the test match between England and Australia in 1975.

The title, Sorry, it had to be done' I've used for my CBGB's songs (all of which are recorded as The Deleted) is a quote from the campaign.

All the best

I like your singing has a very smooth 60's vibe with a cutting quality , excellent song !

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
Glad
you enjoyed this one. I recorded the vocals on two tracks with slapback echo and a dash of chorus - I tend to record most of my vocals this way as it's quite flattering - I think the echo complements the guitar sound quite well on this track.

All the best
Peter

mowguy3 said 241 days ago
I agree
a 60s sound. I like it. Great mix, great vocals and The guitar (after my second listen)has that early British Vox sound. Some nice playin as well.
Thanks,and thanks for the download.
Russ

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
I'm happy
the playing sounds OK as I did struggle with it (perhaps recording past midnight is a bad idea) - I always find the B chord awkward so I used a capo on the 3rd fret and played all three chords (A, B, G) as barre chords. I agree, there is a 60's tone to the guitar.

Thanks for dropping by and for your comments

Great track Pete - love the guitar work, and I really like your vocal on this - the way you sing 'innocent' is kinda punky!
steve

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
Thanks Steve
I enjoyed putting this one together - The chorus (such as it is) was meant to be a bit bit punky as this was recorded with CBGB's in mind, so I'm glad it came across that way.

All the best

Go George Go
Cool One Peter.

Kinda has a classic Kinks sound. They were kind punky/ garageband in there own way.

Don't know the George story, but it doesn't detract from the story as is.

Peter Bauckham said 241 days ago
Just so happens
that I love The Kinks. I've always felt that many punk bands owe a lot to 60s bands. The G.Davis is Innocent campaign was pretty big in this part of England in the mid-70s but I doubt that it was important enough for worldwide coverage (I imagine the test match being cancelled would have made the news in Austrailia). It's funny how some things stay with you - it was 33 years ago!

All the best
Peter

Rebsie said 240 days ago
Nice
I confess I didn't know who George Davis was ... I was probably a bit young in the mid-70s to take much notice of current affairs and I grew up outside London, so it must have whooshed over my head.

Anyway ...

The guitar work sets up a very nice vibe and pace, and the vocals suit it really well ... you've relaxed into it and got just the right mood and style. Nice song!

Peter Bauckham said 240 days ago
Hi Rebsie
thanks for dropping by. You would have been far too young then and I think it was mostly south east and east London where the campaign was. I suspect if I hadn't seen the slogan sprayed everywhere it would have passed me by too!

Thanks again
Peter

This is great
You wait months for a Peter Bauckham song, and then two come along at once! Delighted to see you've posted another one, and it's a great track. I remember hearing something about George Davis, but it's only a vague recollection. What a fascinating subject for a song! The singing on this is great - your voice sounds good (someone mentioned "smooth" - that sounds about right!) and I like the way you sing this song - that (punkish?) detachment and defiant delivery, but sung with expressiveness. I like the guitars, too (nice chord progression) and that distorted guitar over the chorus works very well, I think. Excellent stuff. Nicely done, my friend. Keep 'em coming! Peace.

Peter Bauckham said 240 days ago
Thanks David
it's always great to read your comments. And it's great to be posting some new songs after a period of inactivity. I got very inspired doing the CBGB's challenge and ended up with 4 songs finished - it's been really good working with a different sound. I was never going to be able to get a really punky vocal tone but have attempted to put a bit of attitude in to the singing. The song came together quite quickly with very few overdubs or re-takes (once I got the rhythm part sorted). The distorted guitar was just to give it a bit of an edge and to help disguise my bass playing really!

Glad you're enjoying my songs - thanks for your support

Great sound!
Hey Peter, sorry it took so long to get here. BUSY weekend!

I agree with the classic Kinks comparison.

Nice rhythm guitar work with cool effects. Always enjoy your singing...

Also, I think this is possibly your best drums and percussion track to date.

Very cool post my friend!

Be well!

Peter Bauckham said 240 days ago
Hi Mike
I had a busy weekend too and there's always so much catching up to do at MacJams if you miss just a day! When I wrote this I had that set of drums in mind - I used them on one of my songs a couple of years ago (Fashion) and I thought they would fit the 'tone' of this piece. As this was written with CBGB's in mind, I kept it quite simple (and short) - don't know why but I always think this set of drums sounds a bit punky!

Glad you liked it - and I like the idea of Classic Kinks.

Catch up with you soon
Peter

michael2 said 240 days ago
don't know
George Davis, but this is great. A little Robyn Hitchcock with some Kinks and Syd Barret thrown in for good measure. Like the simlicity of the fuzz chords and the drum fills are great; your vox are perfect for this. glad to see you posting again.

Peter Bauckham said 239 days ago
Thanks
Michael for listening - I wouldn't think many people outside the UK (and of a certain age) would know anything about G. Davis - just seemed like a good subject to write about. I'm happy with the way the drums fitted in too - the little fill bits link in nicely.

All the best
Peter

the music part is great but
as a voice coach, i have to say that i could hear every single word perfectly - that isn't easy to do so congratulations and i have enjoyed your take on history very much - thank you xoxo

Peter Bauckham said 240 days ago
Thanks Caroline
Always nice to hear from you - My wife Lesley complains if she can't hear the words so she is always good for testing my songs. I enjoyed writing this - history may have been embellished a little but I think it's mostly true! I was amazed that there is so much information on the internet. I should really put the lyrics on the page but they're just scribbled down somewhere - I haven't even made a note of the chords.

Glad to see your poetry is being well used!

A good arrangement and a great production!

Glad this number is to your taste - I took a fairly minimalist approach to the production on this one so I am pleased it works so well.

Too many ppl are innocently pleaded guilty . one for sure is ppl being accused & thrown in jail for being terrorists-accused of- . In a thousnad years we may not have jails anymore as all ppl are victims -of society & other things & need 'care' not jail .
hihi I could be suspected of being a pornoperson as one of my sons(without me knowing ofcourse)has been into terrible(!) pornosites on internet(I could also be wrongly suspected of being a person who 'takes music' illegally & sells or something) I could also- actually anyone! who critisizes GB or writes something suspect can be suspected of being a danger to her country -it happens in the western internetworld as well for sure. Actually democracy is being -have a hard time finding English words..:( I mean it has been better than it is now its been withheld(?) by governments . . if You understand...
TX again Peter !

Great guitar sounds on this one Peter. Your vox sound like the come from somewhere between Morrissey and Robyn Hitchcock to me. Really driving rhythms are what I'm growing to expect from you these days.

I like towards the end where you throw out a "yeah!"

This is a really good story for a really good song.

Well done man! We'll let you off with a warning!

Peter Bauckham said 235 days ago
Thanks
I've still got a couple of 'punky' numbers to post - so watch out! I had a lot of fun doing this - The vocals were pretty much a first run through so I'm pleased that they came so well. Loving your latest BTW. I'll try a keep up the rhythm!

Excellent mix! Very catchy melody too. The drum track is also fantastic- how'd you do that? I'm not familiar with George Davis, so I'll have to follow your link to wikipedia and see what it's all about. Very nice song Peter!

Peter Bauckham said 233 days ago
Thanks
for listening. The drums are from 'Discrete Drums' - yeah, I think these fitted the bill quite well - I'm afraid drum tracks are a bit hit and miss with me - I never seem to have enough time. Hope you check out the link - I found it interesting.

George Davis Is Innocent.

HI Pete must have missed this one. Sorry This is a another cracking song.
George Davis might just have been innocent though ? LOL
Thanks for another fantastic download of your great music and singing.
i have a nice surprise coming up soon on my page - Hopefully.
So move over Pete here comes Dee :)

Peace Dee xx

Peter Bauckham said 233 days ago
Hello Dee
Thanks for finding this - it was all quite low key after the CBGB's thingy - I don't normally post songs quite so close together (to be honest, my output is a bit erratic anyway). Glad you liked it - I hope he was innocent - I suspect his supporters would have been more than a bit p****d off if he did do it - I quess we'll never know the whole truth!

Thanks as ever.
Peter

PS - I do like your Rock 'n' Roll tune - looking forward to the tweaked version.

this doesn't betray or belittle your own influences and style, but your strong UK flavor in this song really feels like Jones and Strummer in their best days!

G Davis is innocent
George Davis innocent, there's a laugh. My father Peter Chappell was the one responsible for the whole campaign, spraying the bridges and digging up headingly. Unfortunatley for my dad, he never knew that Davis was not only having over the whole of the UK but also his best mate my dad... He deserves to rot for what he put his family and mine through, and all will come to light in the near future and Davis will be shown in his true light. Davis's first wife Rose is still a very good family friend and both her and my mum were also arrested during the campaign whil trying to defend Davis's innocence.

Peter Bauckham said 153 days ago
Wow
that's really interesting... Thanks for dropping by and listening. I was only about 12 when all this was happening - and not much interested in affairs of the day but this one stuck with me. I remember my father was totally unconvinced about his innocence.
