Description On April 29, 2005 my sister passed away from a very aggressive cancer. She died 5 months after diagnosis. These words (from a poem my Grandmother found by an unknown author) formed part of her eulogy. These words were put to music late in 2005 and the song was given to my mother for Christmas (thanks to a fabulous Macjammer who graciously allowed me to use a piece of his music to sing these lyrics over) ... however, due to other artist's contributions to this original piece of music not wanting lyrics or vocals put onto the song, I was never able to post the original version. These words also became immortalized in part, with some new lines, in a poem which will forever be emblazened on my feet (in the form of a tattoo) ... these words are now being sung again ... I have MIXED up the melody so as to make it completely unrecognizable to the original music score which I sung them to .... I offer up this ACAPELLA as an OPEN COLLABORATION, hoping there are some feisty MacJammers out there who would love a new challenge .... THIS ACA version is FULL OF ECHO AND REVERB! I can send the (naked) Un-affected DRY tracks to anyone who dares to desire to put some music to this .... just drop me a line and be patient because these days I likely only get to my computer on weekends!
Lyrics Come dry your tears
Smile again love
I’m only a whisper away
Near the dusk of the evening
Just out of sight through the day
Watching you waking and sleeping
Hearing each prayer that you pray
Sending my love to surround you
I’m only a whisper away

Come dry your tears
Smile again love
Remember the good times we’ve known
Cherish the joy we discovered love
That was planted and grown

Your road may seem lonely ahead love
And distant horizons look grey
You wont be walking alone love
I’m only a whisper away

So laugh and rejoice
When you think of me
Look for a hummingbird during the day
It will likely be me right beside you
I’m only a whisper away

Hmmmm
.. Chanting ... I hadn't thought about that .. maybe someone (hint hint) could do a version with an Eastern Chant Flair ... could be interesting ....

Haunting
This is gorgeous Alannah. The lyrics are hearbreakingly beautiful. Very meaningful. I would love to try to put some music to this, but I honestly don't know if I'm capable of doing it justice. Your singing is perfect - I can totally see this accompanying a funeral procession through the streets to the river. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

kassia said 248 days ago
Ahh...
and now I get to the end and there's hope. Strength and love. A gorgeous ending, heading into the major out of the minor. Thank you again.

Alannah said 242 days ago
Yes ...
.. the funeral procession might be spot on .... these words did form part of the Eulogy for my sister when she passed away .... feel free to tinker with it .... or pieces of it ... whatever your mood feels like ... unfortunately I cannot take credit for the lyrics ... they came from an OLD OLD magazine my grandmother had (she never throws anything away) ... and it said Author Unknown ... but I suspect it's been around for a long time ... (hope no one sues me or anything .... hahaha)

Thanks Skean ....
... I'm a little late at getting around to replying to comments on this .... haven't had any time on the computer this week ..... but I have now heard your rendition of it ... and it is EPIC to say the least ! Great job!

Beautifully sung....
....and beautiful words. Would like to carry these words around with me and pull them out whenever memories overwhelm me. In this respect, love never dies. Thanks for this. Terry

Alannah said 242 days ago
so true ..
.. love never does die D2 .... nor the memories .... I added the verses at the end about the hummingbird (they didn't form part of the original poem) ... but the general message about our lost loved ones being only a whisper away is the same as they are only a thought away from us at any time .... and all we need to do is think about them to bring them back to us for a moment .....

Alannah,
There is such deep passion in you for life, for love and for laughter. Through your loss which was very grave you learned to squeeze as much life and human connectedness as you can from every day. It is good to attend to the whispers that together build into a song. You sing and gift us with your wisdom. Thank you, sweetheart.

Loved the tone,
I had been working on this song sampling an Indian guy singing Punjabi folk music, and your voice, in my untrained ear, sounded similar in tone to his. So I kind of mushed 'em together on this track.

I really just took snippets of your singing, attempting to treat your voice like an instrument in a language I didn't understand like the Indian guy. I meant no disrespect to the poem, which has very beautiful sentiment.

sorry ....
.. I can't believe I missed this comment post from October 16th .... I just listened to your tune ... excellent mix up .... this is a new one for me to add to my repetoire of "you sound likes ....."

Thanks for the poetry. My sister also passed away from the disease. She was able to live another 12 months after diagnosis. We have a family joke about hummingbirds that was started after my dad had a stroke. He suddenly began to talk about hummingbirds, angels and how upset he was at Roosevelt. Who knew. Thanks for the song. It was comforting to me and it makes me think about her and how much she is missed.

Alannah said 46 days ago
yes ....
... hummingbirds and angels ... both are real ... it is said that when people pass away they are able to visit us through the hummingbird and that the hummingbird is known as being a catalyst for the soul .... and as far as angels go ... well they live among us everywhere .... I think I like your DAD !
