Description The original Psycho Normal and his Stiff Victims split at the end of '82 citing artistic differences (i.e. an argument about who was buying the next beer) and Psycho Normal was sectioned under the Mental Health Act for not being normal enough. Guitarist Dirk Leningrad recruited a new drummer and bassist and resurrected the Stiff Victims. Early in 1983, whilst on remand in Pentonville for unlawful use of a sheep in a public place, Dirk met the English aristocrat Sir Dennis Crowther who said he'd played a bit of organ in a punk band at Eton and wouldn't mind giving it a go. Sir Dennis never did explain why he was in there.

Knowing he'd have a better chance of a record deal with some totty in the band Dirk persuaded an impressionable young folk singer, Rebsie Fairholm (who he'd met under a table in a pub) to join up. Naive and idealistic, she was easily lured into the exciting and glamorous rock'n'roll life only to find her role would be to make the tea, score the drugs and sing backing vocals that no-one would ever hear as they gave her the mike that didn't work.

Through outrageous good fortune and a serious case of mistaken identity (Dirk looked uncannily like David Essex) they landed a gig at a prestigious New York venue where this track was recorded, which went on to be their signature song when they attempted to represent Liechtenstein in the Eurovision Song Contest.

On the night of the gig they managed 2 songs before the mistake was realised and they were thrown out of the theatre. Meanwhile their Eurovision hopes were dashed when manufactured vocal group Liechtensteiner Sweet Dreams got the nod over them. The Madison muddle was their one and only gig and Dirk acknowledges it wasn't one of his best vocal performances but said they had been up most of the previous night partying.

Be kind to them.

(Dirk Leningrad now has a lucrative career doing David-Essex-o-Grams for middle-aged housewives' parties. Please phone for a brochure. Rebsie also does a fine line in writing intros for webpages. Please phone for a brochure)

Zoom Bang Bang © Dirk Leningrad 1982

This is a true story.

I lived my life in splendid isolation, I was hiding from the past
But let me say by way of explanation that I never thought that love could ever last
then

Zoom Bang Bang, don't know what you did to me
I don't know where to start
Zoom Bang Bang, don't know what you did but
was it you that put that arrow through my heart?

I never thought that I would ever worry about the way somebody felt
but now I'm in love I'm always in a hurry
Every minute we're apart is just like hell

Zoom Bang Bang, don't know what you did to me
I don't know where to start
Zoom Bang Bang, don't know what you did but
was it you that put that arrow through my heart?

Dirk would like to thank Rebsie for telling the story a lot better than he could (he can't remember what he had for dinner yesterday let alone what he was doing 25 years ago). Dirk also extends his thanks to Sir Dennis and hopes the venture with the female warm chocolate sauce wrestling is going well.

Eurovision!
The UK's Eurovision entries have been gone horribly wrong in recent years not helped by allowing the public to choose! This is great however, no 'nil points' this time round.

.. I was trying to place ..
.. what it reminded me of .. shades of "The La's" or "Cast" in overall sound, with some 60s bubble gum thrown in ..fab combo... listened again and again. (only thing it lacks is some better drum sounds imo - everything else is so good .. it shows up the drums).

damiengh said 250 days ago
nice setup
Loved the setup for the scene, helped to take me away to that other day of your almost gotten fame.

You really should have completed the history with being interviewed by the bumbling Roy Mallard(Chris Langham), of "People Like Us".

Loved the instrumental work of the gang on this journey through an historical meeting of talents.

DWL said 248 days ago
Roy couldn't make it
but he sends his regards

Thanks Damien :-)

Zoom Bang Bang
I think this is an amazing song. I appreciate the story as i was not familiar with the band. Now that the secret is out, I say, Zoom Bang Bang!!

Sweet song straight through the heart - raunchy rowdy guitar parts and all. I really love the outro.

Dirk's a star!

DWL said 248 days ago
Right on!
I've been trying to get Dirk out of retirement but those middle aged women are just too tempting.....

He thanks you for the kind words though.

Thanks :-)

Epileptic Gibbon said 250 days ago
One question...
... what happened to the sheep? Should I phone for a brochure? Not for me you understand... I have a friend...
Is it okay on a respectable site like this to comment on someone's organ? Should I phone for a brochure? And what do you mean, you're not David Essex? Should I phone for a brochure? Actually that was six questions, not one. ;-)

DWL said 248 days ago
Well it's like this..

The sheep got a new agent and Dirk couldn't afford it anymore.

You can phone for a brochure but it'll be a while before they are sent out as they're being reprinted as said agent wants too much money for use of the sheep's picture.

Sir Dennis has had his organ mentioned in the best newspapers so a site like this should be fine.

Dirk was David Essex last week but this week Matthew he is going to be Princess Margaret.

lavalamp said 250 days ago
ZOOOOOOOOM
The guitar at the end sounded a lot like Paul McCartney rockin' out. And this is a rockin' great time. Thanks.

good one
Great playing, singing, drums, keys. everything!

I like what you did with the reverb - it really works.

There is some strange pitch tracker thing happening on the spoken words at the start and end - what *is* that?

DWL said 248 days ago
Strange pitch?
There's definitely some strange pitch on the singing as Dirk was not at his best but the intro was just the natural reverb of the hall and that was his natural voice :-)

Thanks for the comments

Cheers

Dick

chemystery said 248 days ago
.
Interesting. I guess the hall had a lot of strong resonances. It sounds really cool. thanks

That was a really great song. I mean the first one ;)

Thanks

And here's where it came from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3VDn5VlvBk

It would seem this story
has a ring of truth to it, but I can't, for the life of me, fathom where you managed to find someone to actually put it into print.

Never the less this is a great track that reflects the events of those days of yore quite accurately, even down to the singing. lol

Nice job Dick, Dennis, and Rebsie, although from the song info it's is a bit difficult to discern who did what, where, and to whom. No matter, it's still a hoot to listen to, my compliments to you all, and to the chef.

Ed

DWL said 248 days ago
Perceptive Ed
The song was for my first wife so I think you'll understand a little more.

I really appreciate the listen and the comments.

Thanks

Thanks Vic
It was a lot of fun so it's good to see other people enjoy it too.

Springsteen? Wow, that's a compliment.

Incredibly good song - definitely hits the
nail on Nick Lowe's head. Or is that Brinsley Schwartz or the Flaming Groovies? Man you really made something here and brought another side to the project. Great work.

great job! big song with a cool sound.

I think
you should put this in for Eurovision... certainly not null points!

Guys - this is fuckin great - totally spot on, but you know, this brought a big grin to my face - i'm gonna be singing this all day now!

VicDiesel said 247 days ago
Hey punk, yes I'm talking to you!
You should have won the Eurovision contest. From what I remember it was usually utter crap and not nearly as entertaining as this. (But I still have a weak spot for Abba's Waterloo, and the Dutch entry by Teach-In.)

Say, this sounds solid. Let me know if you're coming over for next years SXSW?
