Description There seems to be a lot of sadness around lately. It is a fact of life. So to get past that, I have been trying to write a happy song. For whatever reason, I could not do it. I wrote this and could not get it out of my head. Someone told me the only way I could move on was to let this out, that it needed to be said. So here it is...I ask you ahead of time to forgive me for doom and gloom. I just needed to release these feelings. God's blessings to each of you and your families. You have sure blessed me with your support and friendsips here.
Lyrics Open your eyes
Take a deep breath
First there is life
And then there is death

He was only 18
And his heart was broken
There was no one who knew
No words he had spoken

And then one day
He threw his life away
And left us standing here

Open your eyes
Take a deep breath
First there is life
And then there is death

She was only 18
And she was always alone
She thought everyone else
Had somewhere better to go

And then one day
She threw her life away
And left us standing here

Why am I standing here
Standing here
I didn't want to let you go

Let me make it clear
You were so dear
I'm sorry I didn't let you know

And then one day
You threw your life away
And left us standing here
Standing here
Standing here

so much to say
Standing here, looking at the same teenage world through the same parents' eyes... time for a huge group hug. Parents and kids. Thank you for sharing this very touching song... beautifully written and performed and sung, and as always, heartfelt.

Lovely piece
As I said in the chat. Some solo strings would flesh it out nicely - perhaps add some tension in the breaks. Wonderful singing!

MarkHolbrook said 252 days ago
I wish Gail
was surrounded by a killer Mac Pro with Logic and GarageBand and all the required audio interfaces... Wow... what a music machine we would have!

She does this stuff with a sampler! It has some stored sounds but like she said in chat "I don't have a very good cello".

gail60 said 252 days ago
Thanks LunaTrick
Thanks LunaTrick
Glad you stopped by. I am limited as to what I can add, but I appreciate your input and I agree with you on the strings. My cello choices on my keyboard sound like poo though.... Thanks for the comments. Take care.

You tell...
...such a sad story in such a tender and beautiful way. Gail, your vocals here are wonderful: restrained, nothing fancy, just clear as a bell and with a quality that is just so pleasant to listen to. The piano backs this all up beautifully, though I, too, hear more of a string bed behind this to give it a bit more breadth and warmth. But even so, it is just quite wonderful as it is. (I hope you won't mind one small suggestion. The vocal lead seems a bit loud in the mix. Maybe it is on my end only. Don't know. Maybe just take it down a tad.)
I am thankful for having heard this beautiful number.
Peace.
Paul

gail60 said 252 days ago
Hello Paul
Awww so good to see you here. I have not made my way back to your songs and I apologize for that...I have no excuses that even matter. I love your music and need to get by asap and I will.
I agree that the vocals could be quieter but this is just one of those post it or forget it...so I posted. I am glad you liked the song though and appreciate your kind comments very much!

i was blown away when you honored me with a sneek peek ... and this final is stunning in so many ways. i understand the sense of dread in baring one's inner thoughts ... but tis the cost of wonderful music ... and this is a "gem". from someone who writes such "fluff" lyrics at time i am humbled by these meaningful and timely lyrics you have penned .... amazing stuff .... and i remain...
your biggest fan
thanks for letting the rest of us share in this beauty.

gail
this is beautiful. just perfect as is. the teenage years are hard, it feels like you're standing on the edge of a cliff; they have no idea of all the options that are there for them.

i hope that whoever you wrote this for will get past the rough times. it's good they have you.

gail60 said 252 days ago
Thanks Michael
Teen years are crazy....they are difficult for many and sadly, some do not survive. My heart hurts for the ones that have lost a loved one who may have gave up, especially when there was no warning. Michael, Thank you for the sweet compliments and the listen. You are so kind and I appreciate what you bring to this place!

Your lyric writing in this song is your best so far. You tell the story with out any unneeded words. Simple and beautiful.

gail60 said 252 days ago
Hi Warden
You know how much I value your opinion because you know me better than anyone here, even as unfortunate as that may be for you :)
Thank you for listening to this and I appreciate what you said about it being my best. Thanks for your support of my music and as I have mentioned many times, I would not even be here if it were not for you! Thank you.

Gail
This is superb and though it's a song of sadness it's very beautiful and beautifully sung. I love those harmonies.... but the simplicity of singing alone with the piano is what makes it for me. Your voice is really lovely, cheers M

Aww Maurice!
Thank you so much. I really do appreciate that. I am happy that you liked this song in all of its simplicity. It is a deep subject but one I finally gave into posting. Thank you so much for your very kind words. I always enjoy hearing from you!

I didn't notice you standing there
and I the lessor for it. This is a song for the ages my friend. It talks to a subject that is often swept under the rug like so much dust, but the needs to be brought into the light and minds of everyone. So many young people do not understand that they are not alone, because too many adults are not paying attention to the little signs they give us every day about how they are feeling.

This is a very beautiful and amazing song Gail. Your vocal is inspiring as is you piano playing.

Thank you for this beautiful Song Gail. Kudos and Bravo to you for sharing it with the world.

Be well my dear friend.

Tender and Touching
The more I hear you sing, Gail, the more I am reminded of Roberta Flack, who paints aural portraits with her vocal stylings.

The topic here is heavy, to say the least, but you treat it with wonderful sincerity and taste.

Now, be happy... and write happy. ;)

Hi Mark
Yes, Very emotional and very hard to discuss. Difficult to realize how much we take for granted sometimes. I am grateful for your visit and compliments. I enjoy listening to your music Mark and look forward to the next one. Thanks!

guitapick said 251 days ago
First:
I won't even say "GREAT" or anything like that. It is what it is...as fundamental as the ground on which we stand.

Second: I've never been able to get "up" by listening to happy tunes when I'm sad. I've always had to either listen to/play/or write a song that is what I'm feeling. The more we push the bad away, the longer it stays with us...it's why time flies when your having fun and crawls when...

Have to allow life to be what it is and let it flow through us before we can truly move on...I can see you've done this here...thanks, Gail. And I'm sorry for your pain.

gail60 said 251 days ago
Yes!
I know exactly what you mean. I am the same way. I have had a difficult time dealing with death lately and a comforting way I can deal sometimes is through the music. Thus this song. Very moody, very sad, and just real. Thank you for your comments Bob. They mean alot to me. Be well.

Roxylee said 250 days ago
Wow, Gail...
You never cease to amaze me. I'm so glad you posted this one. I want every teenager and his/her parents of to listen to this and take it to heart. There is an epidemic of cutting, hopelessness and suicide going on and songs like this make me realize how we need to listen to and hug our teens, no matter how much they test us. Your piano skill, song writing ability, and vocals are just wonderful.

gail60 said 249 days ago
Roxylee thanks!
Thanks for the kind words. This was a hard song to sing because of the deep content that is so close to my heart. For any parent to have to suffer the loss of a child...oh my, such incredible pain. I appreciate your sweet support as always.

Songs of good heart...
...get my vote...

This is elegant and lovely. Your vocal is unaffected, sweet and moving. You manage to let the song be moving all on its own, without schmaltz or drama.

You also have a nice feeling for song form, and so the structure of the song itself is nicely rounded. And the piano playing is just right.

Ed

gail60 said 246 days ago
ahhh my favorite enemy
I am thrilled that you made it by. Happy songs are much better for everyone, but sometimes, everyone just doesn't matter. Right? LOL, I think you know what I mean. There is a lot of power in sorrow though also and sometimes things just have to be said. This was one of those songs. Hey, I am ready to sing a happy song. Should we do a collab for people that despise each other like you and I do? :) Seriously, Thanks Ridd. Much appreciated, even though I hate to admit it!!!

rustykangaroo said 246 days ago
well done!!!
this is very touching. its hard to choose which i like best your piano playing or your voice, they are both really stellar. the recording was nicely done and the background vocals are nice. its really a great song thats really moving. you have to have some really nice music to tackle that kind of subject matter and you pulled it off nicely with your music. you and your piano are really in sync.

gail60 said 243 days ago
wow thank you
I really appreciate that so much. You are just too kind. I am thrilled that you like my music as I really enjoy yours also. This particular song does deal with a tough subject matter like you mentioned, but it is real to all of us. Thank you for coming by and listening and the comments made my day.

Warren Smith said 245 days ago
poetic
Thoughfully, as well as emotionally, sung.

Love the harmonies.

You have a concise way of writing that cuts to the core of the matter, like "she thought everyone else had somewhere better to go," which leads to "and then one day/she threw her life away." Poetic, yet very direct and emtionally succinct.

gail60 said 243 days ago
Thanks Warren

i was so grateful for the comment you left on my page so i thought it was only polite if i came and had a listen to your pieces, and, well...wow. I really wasn't prepared for something quite so emotional - such a compelling piece. I really loved everything about this, especially the simplicity (the vocals and piano just work so well together). I've always been a sucker for powerful, emotional songwriting, and you really hit the spot.
thank you!

Very Good Song
Your voice reminds me of Phoebe Snow especially when you harmonize with yourself.

Good lyrics and changes in the melody to keep it interesting. I'm also glad you only played piano and didn't add any other instruments to the arrangement. It made the vocals and story stand out more.

Very well done.
