Achingly lovely...
This is another beautiful gem from you, but something very special comes across here. It speaks of a wonderful, warm relationship. Not only have I downloaded this, I will send a copy to my daughter, who loves peaceful, gorgeous music composed with obvious heart.

So very, very beautiful... Blessings to you and Karen.

Soft and gentle like a lovely woman
A very amazing piece of music Mark, for what is I'm sure an amazing woman. I did a few songs for my wife before she passed away and she got to hear them all. I'm thankful I took the time to tell her how much I loved her before it was too late. And now I have the music to remember her with.

I'm also glad that you did too. We never know how much time we have, so don't waste it. Enjoy the joy of a wonderful woman by your side.

Beautiful piece of music Mark. Thank you

Ed

Yes it's the same guitar that I've used on every song.I have a house full of guitars but only 1 that doesn't cause hand pain... totally weird.

Tiny_Man_Inside said 254 days ago
The phrasing is spot on.
timing and touch are just so perfect.

Ibstrat said 252 days ago

Another beauty
Your posts always have such a soul to them regardless of title, picture or subject matter and even if not knowing this being a song for your wife is still so dripping with sweet emotion.A beautiful piece of work.

Daniel

Ibstrat said 251 days ago
That's
a really nice thing to say.I've always preferred "feel" music to technical music. If I am putting some of that across that's great!

rsorensen said 254 days ago
beautiful song
she must feel pretty honored. this is very well done.

Ibstrat said 251 days ago
Thanks
Your latest song blew me away.

said 254 days ago
Nice.
Do I detect "Ode to Joy"? Very Randy my friend.

What a beautiful piece for an amazing person.

Glad to meet her.

Awe struck..

Ibstrat said 251 days ago
Randy
I've probably taught "Dee" a few hundred times. Maybe some of it rubbed off.Randy is probably me favorite metal player.Everything he did had tremendous soul.I think he was intrigued with all of the possibilities the guitar had to offer- not just power chords and flash solos.Speaking of soul- just checked out "Tears".That is some top notch playing.Phrasing like that can't be taught. You have to be born with it!

Moviz said 254 days ago
Well Karen
must be pleased with this dedication.... it's just beautiful and filled with tenderness and feeling, regards M

Ibstrat said 251 days ago

Carry on
Man, I wish I were your wife! Uh... no, that didn't come out right... What I mean is, WHAT'S SHE GOT THAT I DON'T??? No, I just re-read that last sentence, and I'm pretty sure that didn't come out right either... Okay, last try: This is very beautiful, as I'm sure is your wife!

There! I feel a lot better now. As you were.

Ibstrat said 251 days ago
Thanks Clark
Is this an example of pan-diatonic writing?

composerclark said 250 days ago
Pan-diatonic
Well, if "pan-diatonic" means "the ravings of a madman", then yes; absolutely!

;+)

Karmatoburn said 253 days ago
beautiful
simply outstanding. A lovely tribute to your significant other. Mark, your recordings are always sooo clean and pure. Right up front and pro sounding.

also, after I d/l'd I noticed you didn't 'tag' the mp3 file. You'll want to do that so when this gem pops up on someone's player they'll look and say "ah yes" Ibstrat!

Ibstrat said 251 days ago
Yes
I keep forgetting to do that. Thanks for reminding me!

Ejh said 253 days ago
Dagnab it!
I've got a 'Song For Karen' too! Now everyone's going to think I'm just jumping on the "Karen song" bandwagon, going with the latest trend...

Talk about a "bell-like tone", Mark...this is sonorous and chiming and gorgeous. Its overtones have overtones!

Great feeling to this...

Ed

Ibstrat said 252 days ago
So
if the overtones have overtones that means that the D chord I am playing is actually a Dmajor7(b7,b9,9,#9,11,#11,b13,13)chord. Cool!

MarkHolbrook said 253 days ago
So perfectly played!
So relaxing and beautiful! Wow... Thanks LB!!!

Cadillac Mountain...
...is astounding at sunrise, driving down towards the clouds...we had a tiny car which we hid behind a boulder so we could camp on the top there one night...left at sunrise...I'll never forget that...

...another wonderful tune, Mark...gorgeous chord inversions and your touch/technique/expression is beyond words...

Best to you, maestro...

Musical sincerity
I'm all about writing songs for amazing wives! Guess I was foolish to think I was the only one who had one!

Outstanding playing and an absolutely beautiful song.

Question- Did you hike up Cadillac Mtn while you were there?

Ibstrat said 248 days ago
Well
we drove up which is probably cheating!

Vic Holman said 252 days ago
Mark!
I am going to have to assume that you are a very patient man. Because it really comes through on this really nice piece. well, actually on most of your tunes. very sweet!

Ibstrat said 248 days ago
Well
you have to be pretty patient to teach 60-70 guitar lessons per week. No, you're on the wrong string...NO YOU"RE ON THE WRONG FRET!..NO YOU'RE ON THE WRONG STRING AND FRET YOU #$%*&#! %^&*$#@!

paul f. page said 252 days ago
Rightfully...
...there are an awful lot of wonderful comments here. Your playing is just so mellow and so beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed this gentle song and the fact that you kept it simple and uncluttered. It is one of the very best guitar solos I've ever heard!
Peace.
Paul

Ibstrat said 248 days ago
Wow
that is an amazing compliment.I did kind of try to keep it simple. In fact I think the whole thing is completely diatonic. Thanks so much for the comment!

John Stebbe said 250 days ago
Beautiful
This song evokes peace, serenity, and order, which most of us lack. It gives me a hint of what life could be like someday.

Expertly played and recorded. A treat.

I like the part where you go to the second chord in the theme (a IV chord?) while the melody plays the fifth degree of the scale, creating a ninth -- genuius!

Ibstrat said 248 days ago
I'm
pretty sure that I've never done anything that qualifies as genius(Don't know if you've ever seen the Looney tunes where Wile E. Coyote keeps saying "Wile E. Coyote, super genius"-that's genius.)But I greatly appreciate your comments!

gail60 said 250 days ago

Blew me away
Beautiful!
Awesome playing!
Last time I wrote a song for my wife she ran to the bathroom and cried....only because she felt the time I spent playing and recording the tripe I called a song could have been better served charging up billable hours at the firm and increasing our family`s personal wealth.

But this is not the case with your song. Reminds me of Metheny`s work on ECM.
Did I say great playing!!!!
Hope you wife loved it I sure did!

Ibstrat said 245 days ago
Thank you

my tastes are pretty eclectic- talent as big as yours is impossible to ignore!I appreciate your listening to my stuff.

AEROjet said 248 days ago
Oh joy.
I think this is just wonderful. You have a great sense of phrasing, and your tone is washed out with reverb. Instantly I'm calm. I almost want to hear this against a backdrop of dragonflies in a grassy field. It's very "nature-esque."

Ibstrat said 245 days ago
Actually
putting dragonflies on it is a good idea.I would if I knew how to do it!I checked out some of your jazz stuff-you are really talented.Hope you like Berklee- don't take the mega-chops players too seriously.

10 points for 7s and 9s from 12p!
dood, WOW back at you. sorry i haven't checked this song out until now. very sweet, pretty chords. almost meloncholy, but hopeful. (yes, chords convey emotions... at least to me.) you write with a lot of nice, slightly dissonant 9ths and 7ths... right up my alley. nice tone, verb and delay too. very well done. ha, nice to the last chord. i might have even left out the root of the last chord and ended on the 9th-ish chord you had there. but then i like to torture people like that. ('no closure for you! haha!')
