Description When I sat down to record this one Friday afternoon, I reckoned I could get it done by dinnertime. I'd record all the basic tracks, maybe do a few punch-ins and comping the following day, and then just spend some time mixing and mastering, maybe post it on Monday.

That was about two months ago...

The basic song was pretty straightforward, or so I thought. But when I started recording, I struggled to get it to sound right. Some of the lyrics needed to be changed. I couldn't sing part of the chorus. I found it hard to get the right instrumental color. The arrangement didn't feel right. The middle eight was awkward....and on and on...It became a long drawn out process.

I managed to address most of these issues through trial and error (and a healthy dose of sheer luck) but one aspect I could not get right was the lead guitar. It just stumped me. Everything I tried was either jarring or uninteresting or....what's the word I'm looking for...oh yeah, bad!

So I asked Ed (Ejh) if he would give it a shot. Not only did he graciously agree, he devoted a chunk of time and energy to it, and in very short order! And he absolutely nailed it! His melodic playing and lovely clear sound were just what was needed. Now I cannot imagine the song without his guitar.

Thanks and deep bows, Ed. I appreciate all the time and creativity you put into this. It was just a pleasure to collaborate with you.
Lyrics Turn Away Slowly

What kind of accident does that?
What kind of monster do you love?
When did the lie turn into a fact?
When did the push become a shove?

You want to go but you don’t want to leave
You say you know and then you say you just can’t believe it
Now the facade has disappeared
Now that the mask has dropped away
What is it keeps you standing here?
What is it makes you want to stay?

You say you know it’s a pitiful romance
You say you’ll go but you want to give it just one more chance

Turn away slowly
Walk quickly to the door
Don’t look back
Step out into the world

Gather your forces to your side
Gather your strength for what’s to come
Lean on the ones who love you right
You don’t have to face this night alone

I know you know the sun will shine again
It’s time to go and bring this tragedy to an end

Time to show the face you hide
Time to trust yourself and say goodbye

Glad you enjoyed it. Comfy! I love it - what a great description. Now I think about it, that's just the effect I was going for! Glad you enjoyed the guitar. I was so pleased Ed agreed to work on this; I think he did a great job. Thanks for listening as always. Cheers, my friend. Now that's done, I can go and sing some blues...Peace.

Hey Steve
Thanks for stopping by. I'm very glad you found it uplifting! Pretty, eh? I think if I add that to Feter's comfy comment, I might have the keywords for this song! I love the idea of rocking gently - sweet! Happy you liked it, dude, and delighted you enjoyed the production; it took a while! Thanks for your kind words, man. Peace.

Good stuff David
You have set of quality songs posted here (including the early stuff). Always good to have something new from you. I know you never feel confident with your signing - but you really should! Everything fits well together - Ed's soloing blends in brilliantly. Nicely balanced mix and recording.

Added to my iTunes library.

Hi Peter
I'm always glad to hear your opinion of anything I post, and I'm happy you like this one. I agree, Ed's guitar is perfect for the song, in my opinion. He hit the nail on the head, for sure. Thank you for you kind words about my singing. You've always been very encouraging. Flattered this has been added to the iTunes library! Thanks, Peter. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Thanks for inviting me, David...
I love this song, and I love it more the more I hear it. Over headphones, where I have come to know it very well, it's a treat, with acoustic and electric guitars filling out a really tasty mix--and I'm talking about the guitars YOU played, as I first heard it...

I think you did a great job with the mix. It's even better than the last version I heard, which I thought was already good. I think you did an excellent job of blending your vocals.

I'm a big fan of your singing, David, and your singing here is very good indeed.

And let me get back to the important bit: it's a really strong song to start with...

Anyway, you made my week just asking me to be part of this...

Ed

dajama said 256 days ago
Hi Ed
Thanks again for helping with this. You brought a piece of magic to the track and it was really a pleasure to work with you. You were extremely generous with your time and your talent! I'm happy you like the final version. Ultimately, I could have spent a month tweaking it, but enough already...I decided to push it out of the nest. The fact you like the song is great, and thank you for your nice words about the singing. I really enjoyed working together on this, and it really wouldn't be here and finished if it hadn't been for you. You the man! Cheers. Peace.

Thoughts from the Bull...
I have to agree with echoroom - you've created an uplifting piece that really puts your talents forward.

the production quality is outstanding, while the performances are so tight! Remarkable!

I especially liked the way you handled the ending. It could have found itself running on, but you chose to wrangle it together and close it well.

Nice work, all around. This is really great stuff! Thank you!

dajama said 256 days ago
Thanks for your very
complimentary comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the production and performances. Ed did an amazing job of creating a guitar track that synched perfectly with the rest of the track. The lovely playing he did over the outro is one of the reasons that ending works, I think. Very glad you enjoyed this. It's great to have you around again. Many thanks. Peace.

Wow - what a great collab
This tune is so solid in every way - vocals - guitars - production - lyrics and especially emotion. Add a beautiful arrangement and it just soars. Excellent! I love how it just keeps getting better - it has the kind of vibe that Roy Orbison gets somehow.

Big surprise ..
.. hearing Ed on something new (sorry Ed!) and playing the Tele like an old pro (it WAS the Tele Ed?).

Top song David - you improve with every new post. Like Ed, I really enjoy your vocals. A special mention regarding the acoustic sound - really difficult to do what you've done here - just the right balance on the EQ. Very rhythmic and well panned.

Excellent song!
Neil

Hi Neil
Many thanks for stopping by to listen and for your nice comment. Glad you enjoyed this one, and thanks for your mention of the acoustics. Great writing and playin!
It's soooooo nice to hear Mr. EJH in this! (ya coulda told me, Ed!) What a wonderful side order to my cup-0'java this a.m.!

Dign' the synergy between both g'tars and the tunage as a whole. I'm always pleased as punch after having listened to one of your tunes, David. I know what it's like to think that ya can just punch som'em out and be done w/ in a few hours and then end up spending what ends up feeling like forever and a day... But I'd have to say that time was well spent here and especially, w/ the very smart move to invite Ed!

A wonderful collaboration, indeed! Thanks! Macca

dajama said 251 days ago
Thanks, man
Really glad you stopped by to listen and delighted you liked the song. Glad you think the time was well spent. Someone around here (actually I think it might have been Ed!) once said that in order to write any kind of a decent song, you have to write a lot of bad ones first. That's always the fear when you find yourself spending a long time working on something. Is this going to end up on "sounded like a good idea at the time" pile! Ed's touch on the guitar, and his encouragement, helped this one end up here, and I'm happy you enjoyed it. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Oh thank you, David, both for the absolutely gorgeous song (which is riding along on my iPod for good, now) but also for bringing Ed's musical touch back to us. You know, it never occurred to me that someone could just "ask Ed..." I don't know why, but now that I've figured that out, he may be in a ton of trouble.

You guys really merge very well, musically, together and sound very much like a band sharing a vision. I'd very genuinely like to hear the two of you work together again, especially on anything as incredibly well-written as this.

Seriously, Ed, please play and record more. You're killing us here. Listen to yourself on that bridge and just stop hogging all that talent at home!

dajama said 248 days ago
Hi, Lisa
Thanks so much for stopping by. Glad you liked the song, and thanks for the iPod nod - I take it as high praise!

As for Ed, well it wasn't easy, you know. I had to trek through miles of jungle, fighting off attacks by the band of followers that worship him as a god, until, finally, after weeks of battles and bouts of malaria, I reached his fortress buried deep in the jungle. I ducked the poison darts he shot at me, hopped over the snake-filled pit, and asked him if he would help me out with a song I was working on. He said "No problem." Kind of an anti-climax, actually...

Thanks again, Lisa. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers. Peace.

Such a sweet polished sound.
THe production and arrangement are superb. There are a lot of details that enhance the song. I can see how you might have devoted so much time to this. It's a well crafted song all together.
The melody is inviting and just flows from verse to bridge to chorus. The melodic electric guitar in the background only adds to the depth.
Great lyrics too!

dajama said 245 days ago
Thanks, man
I really appreciate your stopping by to listen and making such a considered and thoughtful comment. Glad you liked the arrangement, and I'm especially happy you think the time spent on the song was worth it.
