Description Vic: music & production
Michael2: lyrics and vocals

I was playing around with some odd chord progressions and this made me think of a latter Bowie style. Since I going for a odd sound anyway it also gave me a chance to apply a filter processor to a guitar track. So the stepping synth effect you hear is that.

I ask Michael if he would be interested in doing vocals on this. He has been pretty slammed with work, but it was a no rush deal. Then as you may know, he got jumped and banged up some. At the time I figured it would be a while before Michael would get to it. So, I was quite surprised that he was working on it. Michael's vocal take kind of has that Brian Ferry/ Bowie sound, which fits nicely. I really dig the wailing vocal at the end. It was worth the wait to get this tune together. Thanks Michael, it's always a pleasure to team up with you.

and I come back ater the second listen, so impressed by your sound and the voice of Michael with this tone which remember me Bowie, once again excellent tune, Bravo

Vic Holman said 265 days ago
Double Thanks Marc
when i did the music, i knew right off that Michael would be perfect. when i got his vocal tracks and put them into place I probably had the largest ear to ear grin on the planet. I'm going to have to owe him big time for this.

echoroom said 265 days ago
Guys
I'm mixing a song at the minute, but this wants me to pack it in. Wonderful song, wonderful playing.... Michaels vocal is beautiful and warm, and the music has that Holman vibe with the lushness turned up to 11.

outstanding.

Vic Holman said 265 days ago
hey Steve
sure pull my other leg.
Looking forward to what you got going, talk about raising bars, with you're music I have to bring a stool with a lift just so i can drink a beer with you.

Michael is really magical here. he's a saint.

I sent Michael the music track and he did a excellent job of actually finding a melody within it. I think t all came together wonderfully. I'm pleased that you liked it Feter. Thanks!

Positively Aces!
Michael's lyrics and vox fit this music hand-in-glove. Beautiful collab gentlemen!

Be well!

Vic Holman said 265 days ago
Hey Mike
I agree Michael found a great feel for this and nailed it so well. He has the voice that I always wished I had. like that can ever happen.

Very well balanced mix. Michael's smooth and super vocals adds a new dimension to the cool groove you have her Vic.
Seems very pro put together. The composition/melody has enough originality to be noticed in a crowd, and enough singalong feeling to be hit material.

Bravo!

Vic Holman said 265 days ago
Thanks Thor
I had the tune figured out before I started recording. so the music minus the drums i had finished in a matter of a couple hours. the serious mixing came after adding Michael's vocal tracks. He has a great instinct to what a song needs.

Skean said 265 days ago
I simply love it
As always I love your guitar playing your sound is yes yours on :)
And to have Michael in this vas a nice surprise.. Kudos guys.

I laid all the guitars down very quickly, the music bed was done in a few hours.

It was cool to see and hear how Michael approached the vocals. I really learned something from his experience.

Skean said 262 days ago
Yes that's
the best with all friends here we always can learn something and in the same time have fun together.

Take care my friend

PS: I wish the summer would come back.

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
Thanks Len
I'm pretty happy how this all came out. I thought from the start that Michael would be perfect for this. And it gave me an excuse not to sing.

really glad you liked it!

MarkHolbrook said 265 days ago
Great tune!
This keeps going somewhere I don't expect... Keeps you listening hard.

Micheal, sorry to hear about the jump. At least they don't appear to have hurt those million dollar cords of yours! Great vocals!

Very sweet tune both of you!

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
Thanks Mark
true Michael has a million dollar voice. it should be insured. I thought the chord progression had a cool tension to it in places. kind of haunting too.

dajama said 265 days ago
Great stuff
I love hearing your vocals, Michael, juxtaposed with Vic's trademark sound. Great singing over very cool music. Love the guitar sound - excellent effects, and really lovely changes. The lyrics are cool, and the whole track just works on every level. Did I mention the production is outstanding? Outstanding stuff. Nicely done, guys. Kudos. Peace.

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
Thanks David
There have been a few tunes of Michael's that I would add some guitar work. so. I thought it would be fun to give him something to do his magic on. it came together quite smoothly. Thanks for the listen!

Meeting
between two monsters of talent !. Vic's music and Michael's vocals : magistral result and solid production. I hope that you will still give us some music as this one. So nice.
Thanks to share your wealth.

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
Thanks Rosita
I also hope that Michael's schedule relaxes at some point. I have a blast working with him.

really appreciate the listen to this!

jiguma said 265 days ago
Top post!
Bowie-ish, but mainly Vic Holmanesque. Lovely harmonies - great vocal Michael.

What do you mean "odd chords"? They sound quite normal to me ;)

Logic 8 does some lovely things in the production department Vic!

Nice one!
Neil

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
Thanks Neil
odd chord progression. i think the chords don't follow a fixed key. i'm no expert in that department. but, Dm to Abm, C#m to Fm was aodd combination but it sounds cool.

I have my preset of plug ins that i use so it's mostly plug in and play. then some level and panning adjustments for the most part afterwards.

DWL said 265 days ago
Yet to hear a bad one
from you Vic.

I like the restrained and spooky vibe on this. Still unmistakeably you though.

Creamy production. I must move up to Logic although I suspect it's much more to do with you than Logic :-)

Cheers

Dick

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
Thanks Dick
It's all in the hands. not slight of hand. Michaels lyrics and vocals fit the feel of the song perfectly.

Logic isn't that hard, if i can figure it anyone can.

lavalamp said 265 days ago

Vic Holman said 264 days ago

When i created the music right off the bat i thought about how Michael's vocal would fit. I would of waited months. I'm glad he took it on.

Vic does it yet again! Vocals are really great too.

Adam

Vic Holman said 264 days ago

i always start out on a acoustic usually in the evening and sometimes a song happens. Laying out the tracks came pretty fast, in a couple hours. know if that could only happen all the time.

Ibstrat said 264 days ago
This is
some creative stuff. It is a kind of an unusual chord progression but it totally fits the song.Vocals and guitar work are excellent.

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
thanks Mark
thats what i thought. the chord progression of Dm to Abm, C#m to Fm in the verse doesn't seem logical, but it sounds cool. it gets ya thinking.

thanks again Mark!

michael2 said 264 days ago
vic
just realized i didn't comment after giving this a listen. wow, you made that mix shine like a diamond. very impressive. everything sounds so good, and you i loved coming up with a melody for this. good job my friend, and anytime you're up for another, so am I.

Vic Holman said 264 days ago
magical Michael
I'm really glad we got this one together. you really did a outstanding job and i appreciate it deeply. Yeah, I'm sure we can get some more out. now about this other song i have with no vocals. I'll give ya break... for now.

five_extra_arms said 264 days ago
Dynamic Duo
Vic, this is a very odd chord progression as you mentioned, but it quickly turns into something amazing. It has a kinda horror movie type of souund in your guitar. Your leads scare me. I love being scared. Thank you.

This really is stylistically different for both of you.

Michael - your vocals are unrecognizable - I hear the Ferry sound that Vic hears, but I don't hear your typical vocal treatment - not that anything you do is typical, in fact, it's not ever typical. Your harmonies are beautiful and haunting and sad and dark. I really think this vocal performance is one of your most memorable.

Vic, I hear such a big difference in your songs since you swiped the 5 string bass from that poor coworker of yours. Excellent scam! You are really a super bass player.

The wailing at the end is indeed FEE-NOM (phenomenal)

Michael, I hope you are feeling better and I'm wondering if this is a parallel experience to the one that changed Bob Dylan's voice?

Vic - you did a really great job on the drums as well. Sometimes I think you're a real life drummer. Songs like this are quite convincing. The subtle synth noises were really cool too.

You both are extremely gifted songwriters. Thanks for another example of what this site has to offer.

Vic Holman said 263 days ago
Thanks Bob
It does have kind of a haunting sound to it doesn't it. Some how I think deep down that this was totally tailored how Michael. I'm glad he took it on. I could not of done it justice.

The guy I bought the bass from keeps asking "well, how's the bass?" i just say "oh yeah, it's not bad." The best $250 purchase i ever made.

The midi drums I break down to 3 tracks. that way i can control mixing them better.

hopefully i can explore different sounds this year. but first i gotta get that CBGB tune down.

MarkHolbrook said 263 days ago
Vic & Micheal...
I heard this tune all night as I slept...

This is WAY MORE than Bowie could have ever done. You've gone past Bowie's best in my opinion.

The progression is so haunting and distinct that once locked in my brain it just keep looping but as each loop happens it takes off a new direction just like the real song! LIOLI in a major brain way for me!

This is a gold label tune in every way you guys! In fact I think I'm gonna put this on speakers by the door for Halloween! It's got that great haunting sound!

Vic Holman said 263 days ago
Thanks Again Mark
I know what you mean. even though I heard this probably a hundred times in production and mixing I have yet to be tired of it. It does linger in my head as well. Thanks again Mark. And Trick or Treat!

Heightened said 263 days ago

but .... not sure about one of the change-ups. I can't get my fluffy ears around. But music as always is subjective so....

Vic Holman said 262 days ago

Vic Holman said 262 days ago

Michael's vocals and lyrics really fit this like a velvet glove.
I'm surprised at how many albums Michael has already done. Hopefully we can get some more collabs going. It's always a pleasure.
Thanks again for the listen,

Immeiate download! Mister Vic, this is such studio callibur musicianship! Great Job! Always diggn' Michael's Vox, writing and g'tar work, too! Such a well composed piece. Can't believe this stuff is free for the grab. You guys sound like you've been doing this together forever and a day! The bass is kickn' my bottom around in a nice way too.

Very well done, fellas! Thanks! Dion

Vic Holman said 261 days ago
Thanks Dion
free? no wonder why I have yet to get a royalty check.

I recording everything minus the drums in one morning. And knew right there that this would be great to get Michael involved with. He just ran with it and did a fantastic job.

WillyB said 261 days ago

...and what a great duo! i gave it a listen the day it posted, but didn't get a chance to comment (at work). Glad I was able to find it again. Very cool instrument melody lines, vocals and production. Very nice work guys!

Vic Holman said 261 days ago
Hey Thanks

Funny thing is I played this at work for some of the guys and all I got was blank stares.

Teaming with Michael is always a pleasure.

What a cool collab guys
this is a magic match and no less stunning than I'd expect from you two. Great guitars and production Vic - I love the stepping synth thing in there - works very well. I'm struggling at the moment with a tune - just can't seem to get a vocal together. Hmmm.

Vic Holman said 261 days ago
Hey Kevin
I'm really glad you liked it. That means a lot.

Believe it or not the synth is a guitar track that I ran though a sidechain filter effect that I was playing around with. Something I'm going to have to play around with more.

Yea, I got to get off my rear and get the vocals done for my CBGB song.

Dark and captivating
This is instantly captivating; very clean sound, but, as you say, an unusual chord progression. And then, when Michael's voice comes in, it's impossible not to listen. Fantastic!

Vic Holman said 259 days ago
that's what I thought
I thought the chord progression though simple still a bit intriquing. And Michael has a captivating voice in the first place. He really took it up a notch or three.

damiengh said 260 days ago
Mission Accomplished
Got the sound you were looking for and the Bowie-ish character. Wouldn't be suprised also if Tim Burton added this as part of a soundtrack. Bit of a ghoulish sound to it and very dreamy. Nice changes.
Guitar sounds great as always.

Vic Holman said 259 days ago
my first impression
.. was the music had something of a latter Bowie sound. I mentioned that to Michael and sure enough, I think he nailed it.

Axgrinder said 260 days ago
Damn you got a lot of tunes!
this is different than the usual "Holman" ? it's like you found another "level' or something? I really dig this track... When the summer comes back? Right..... kudos brother,

ax

Vic Holman said 259 days ago
Hey Ax
Lotta tunes, and theres a ton of 'em I never posted and quite a few that I subtracted from here. Maybe they weren't all that good. ha.

The credit goes to Michael to give this something different.

And dang why are we still getting those snow flakes?

Hey vic I always love your graphics. Do you do them yourself?

Vic Holman said 259 days ago
moody blue
yeah it's a very minor key thing. It starts on Dm, the saddest chord of all. ha.

thought it would be cool to catch a style of Bowies. And this came about.

Yeah, I do all the art in Freehand. Even though Adobe bought it out and won't update or support it. Usually takes me 20 to 30 minutes to create each one.

Warren Smith said 259 days ago
haunted by your song
I was walking around with a song floating through my mind, but I couldn't quite get it to come into focus. This went on all morning. Then, suddenly, finally, I pulled a fragment out of my cerebellum: the phrase "When the summer comes back." Oh - it's that song I was listening to the other day on Macjams!

I relate this anecdote to tell you how powerful of a song you have recordered. I think I listened to it twice before leaving without leaving a comment ... and then a couple of days later I find it is oozing out of my ears.

In short: a very haunting piece.

Note: I wish the lyrics were posted.

Vic Holman said 259 days ago
Thanks Warren
True, it has a haunting quality to it. in a good way of course. Michael came up with a excellent chorus to match the guitar riff and sticks like glue. It really has been sticking in my head as well

yrp said 259 days ago

I am really jealous of this song.Crisp production and amazing guitars and vocals!
You did it again, Michael and I think I will have a great time checking Vic Holmans body of work at macjams!

Very Bowie.....
I would have guessed it was him if I hadn't been privy to who this actually is. This is a very cooooool song with great composition and vox. One of my favorites now. I'll have a bit of fun with friends asking them who they think this is.

Wonderful! : )
It is almost summer here again. Soon, you'll be praying for a fresh cool breeze driftin' through your window for the box fan to play with. : ) Michael 2 has a lovely bowiesque lilt to his voice. And your beautiful music felt like a lazy laid back summer day out at the lake. Don't forget the sunscreen. I did and got a bit singed in Atlanta last week. : ) (~A~)
