Keywords bleak is the new black (1)this describes someone else's state of mind (1)post-rock (3)
Description I wrote this today, actually there wasn't much writing involved. i recorded a bunch of toy online instruments (a piano in a floating box, a toy theremin you work by moving your mouse), some online synth toy and a clicking sounds music generator (autoglew). dumped them in GB, processed to taste and then put a melody over it with the Fitch Cello, a viola sound, a kyoto sound and now i'm here to pass it off as a song. picture a sad movie about a lonely tormented soul (like the tenant or taxi driver). guess yesterdays experience had an effect when i did this.

the picture is from the jurassic museum of technology here in LA, thought it looked cool and took the pic with my cell phone. says something about ant eggs.
Hardware intel mini mac, m-audio 49e keyboard, crossfade loop synth sampler
Software: GB4, wiretap pro,gleetchlab 2,

The Tenant is one of the bleakest films
ever made - I also kinda like it - though to call it a favorite would be a bit masochistic. I could hear this going very well with the film. I really like what you whipped up out of the ether. I'll have to give more of your stuff a listen.

michael2 said 238 days ago
thanks man
glad you liked this. i always have a soft spot for the melancholy. i'll be sure and check out your stuff, thanks for listening.

This could be...
used in a movie.
Great use of the reoccurring melody on the Cello.
Very melodic and melancholy.
I love it!

hello bro
i follow your work closely .... i listen and learn ... but bro. going to draw the line at a chunk of concrete to the head to be inspired to create a cool sound bed like this! hey michael ... wonderful to see you firing in all cylinders ... cool track ... hope you are well

Moviz said 238 days ago
This
sounds really well thought out, so just think what you could do if you really tried Michael LOL. It's so very listenable because it's the kind of music that makes pictures in the mind.... great production, cheers M

Michael - so glad you're OK, and what came out of getting wacked by a hunk of concrete (in addition to bruises) was musical inspiration. This is amazing, as is all your work. That you used a bunch of toy online instruments makes this all the more ethereal and maybe eerie to me. You are a true musical wizard. And we all LOVE YOU!

Awwwe

Hi, I hope you are ok now its the psychological damage and hey! I think I hear your pain also in this peice. Way to go Mike. Put it to music if you know what I mean :)
You have been soo brave, I read the forum post but was lost for words whatto say.

I love this.

Peace Dee xx

Magnatone hit it on the head
this is eerie, speaks of desolation and lonliness. You can turn your hand to any genre, cant you?! Thought provoking work... and all from a buncha toys!

cool sounds michael. i'm gonna go bang my head against the wall and see if I can come up with something a quarter cool as this ;) glad you've still got it.
OH - very cool title too. makes me want to watch Ghost in the Shell again.

perfect balance of glitch and melody, and good to hear you intact.

two questions: 1- I googled autoglew but found nothing , so what is it ? 2. is your toy theremin playable directly in GB track or do you have to go through another app (wiretap or other)? Thanks.

Alternate theme...
...for the Twilight Zone? Ha ha...

Cool, spooky mix Michael; and yes, somewhat tormented. You still thinking of that disturbed fellow who attacked you?

At any rate, this is top-notch. Kudos.

Be well friend!

Minimal
Interesting. Simple instruments and complex synth additions work well together.

Thanks
Bill

jiguma said 236 days ago
You should get ..
.. hit on the head more often Michael! I really enjoy your more mainstream posts, but it's so interesting to hear an experimental tune of this nature from you. Sounds like all the sore bits after your little "experience" are healing in the song. Strangely, I don't find a sad vibe here - more uplifting to me.

Very interesting and enjoyable.

I only wish ....
.. you hadn't mentioned the "ants" ... caue I could hear them scurrying around in there ... busy busy doing their ant work .... I may hear that ticking in my head for a while now .... of course the ending was slightly subtle .. you always do something quite kitchy with your endings .. and I almost find myself waiting for that part of the song just to see what you are gonna do and to see where it is gonna end up .... but I liked the tune nonetheless ! M2 always inspiring !

Ibstrat said 233 days ago
Most
of the time I don't listen to songs in the experimental category much but since your name was on it I checked it out.I'm glad I did.Extremely creative use of sounds- you really could do movie scores.(I'm sure there are lots of job openings)Glad to hear you are ok.

Amazing
and interesting, you are among the champions of the creativity and the originality, here again with your "toys".
Nice piece, bravo Michael...

Jurassic Museum is the best!
Really cool little dark carnival music you've got here; sad and creepy with great sounds flipping all over the place.

Wiretap
Now thats a cool program This gave me images of basements filled with unfinished art work someone looking out a window and seeing small puppets pulling centapedes Well you get the pic cool song!

dajama said 232 days ago
Perhaps it was
the fact you mentioned movie in your notes, but I was totally thrown into that vibe from the beginning. It's the credits of a movie, black screens with credits appearing in fractured letters and flickering away, intercut with flashes of a city at twilight, people dragging themselves home, the homeless wandering, the sun setting behind freeway flyovers, dull neon crackling into life over bars, and back to the credit, and the movie is called Ekstasis. Ahem.

Cool stuff. Glad to hear your recent experience has not blunted your creative impulse. This is excellent. Nicely done, my friend. If I ever figure out what happens in the movie after the opening credits, I'll let you know! Peace.

Japanese Glitch
Michael if you've never, you should check out Kiyo. A Japanese glitch artist who only has one public release that I know of, "Chaotic Odd Echo", on Warp. This reminds of his stuff in title and sound.

Nice attempt to pass this off as a song. I'll take it.

Very interesting......
Great build and choice of sounds! Nice and dark, Horror flickish, if you will? Nice to hear your still able to lay down some wicked, albeit, tasty ear candy bro! Outstanding as always. Sorry I have been neglecting my duties as a member of this mystical place, and that is to comment on all the good stuff being churned out of here! Kudos....

Be well,

Eerie and dark
I'm hooked on anything experimental! This is great! I love the mix of sounds. These are all online samples? I'd love to know more on the capture techniques you used. I'll have to check out more of your stuff.

Oh yea!
Bathing in a pool of ambient/progressive/experimental music. This is truly brilliant. I only hope you had me in Kyoto in mind when you wrote it. Kind of doubt it but who wouldn't want to be associated with this song?

said 222 days ago
Not easy to describe!
This could be a great soundtrack for "LOST". Man, this piece left me speechless by how you mixed everything to get such a great sound. You're truly great! I'd consider this as a real gem. Thanks a lot for sharing!

Take Care

Jurassic Technologies
It's great to hear about that strange, magical, ultra-contrived little place.

The found object method you seem to employ is remarkable, gathering sounds from online music toys is genius, as was gathering pathos from a courtroom wait. I love this idea of situational creation and of seizing every passing phenomena as material for artistry. And the results are wonderful. I'm a melancholy junkie (a fiend for melancholy, not an unhappy druggie), and the two tunes i've heard so far really hit the spot. Don't want to ramble on. Great stuff!

ooooooo.....
would you be offended if someone added (or at least attempted to...) this? let me know...i'd really like to try some things if you're okay with it.

this is an amazing tune, my ears are truly elated.......
