Keywords What I did in 1969 (1)Navy (5)
Description This is for the Woodstock Festival by proxy. To make a long story short. I was in Viet Nam in the Navy during the year of 1969. So I just had to tell some stories about the year 1969 that I experienced.

There is one point were I got too close to the mic with my voice. In the process of moving from the Nashville to the San Francisco area I lost my voice pop gard.
Lyrics Well, back in 69 I didn't want to go to Nam
So I joined the Navy so I wouldn't have to see a bomb.
Too make a long story short, I got on a destroyer escort in Seattle,
Just go out of boot camp, we were herded in ship like cattle.

There was a mean petty officer that said
your going over the side. He just loved to see me paint that ship
Swinging the scaffolding side to side.

I swear I think it was him that sent in the word for me to go to Viet Nam
So there enough I went and in the barracks whistled in was a bomb.
----------
There was a drifty kid who went it hit
asleep and didn't run.

But my shivering legs felt like they left me diving into bunker, that was NO FUN.
---------------------------------
Chorus
---------------------------------------
That leads into another story, one that was kind of sick & fun
Our ship crossed the equator, a shellback we were to become.
We had to turn our shorts from front to back , shellbacks served us green noodles on our knees
With a high powered hose at our rear and a view of the high seas.
------------------------
There was a kid that didn't want to be a shellback, frightened by what we had to do. Cause they would push our faces in a food what seemed like awful smelly goo.

And if that wasn't enough remember the Slip n Slide? Well we had to slither through it with trash normally thrown over the side.

At the end was a make shift baptismal font and a shellack we did become. But those were the days on the Reasoner from it we just couldn't run.
_______________________Chorus

I know the happiest days of my life was getting out .
Getting lifted out of the ship by copter made me want to shout.
O the joy, so sublime hallelujah, my 4 years are ended I am free.
But it sure did leave precious memories of days on land and sea
These are some of my experiences as I served the best I knew how.
But it isn't always great to eat green noodle chow.

Nice Tiler, I see you're getting ready!

thanks for stopping by jg
blaine, ya I have been working on some songs but I won't be doing this one . But it could be good for some stories about my time in the service. Becoming a Shellback and having to go over the side of the ship and get heckled by my petty officer and it was petty what he did :)

You always suprise us....... as well as being the master of the fingerstyle guitar, you are also a musical poet with a playful vocabulary. Your music just blows me away - I vote 10's - wait- in fact I have always wondered wh ou didnt't get signed to a record contract back 10 years ago-when they had record labels

You ought to do this more often Bill
tell stories to some great fingerpickin' like this. Yor're following in the tradition of the minstrels of old my friend, and if you do enough for an album you might just bring the genre back into vogue. That would be so cool.

Great stories to great guitar playing, thanks for the memories Bill

Bill you are superb -
I really love this piece. I like everything about it. I am put in mind of one of my favourite players, - Mississippi John Hurt. It is not[to me]very far from Blind Blake either. I have lots of records by both of these men. My favourite track by Blind Blake is - Hastings Street, and my favourite by John Hurt is Stack'o Lee, though it's hard to choose.

Truly excellent, with such warmth. Love the vocals too.

John.

Perspective
Ahh; Tiler sings. It looks like you aren't suffering resentment for your service, and you carry a healthy perspective - if all you bas is green noodle chow, you've got a healthy ladleful of positivity in your life. Your playing always impresses. Thanks for your perspective.

Good stuff
Besides being in the Navy myself and therefore identifying with the song, I like the finger picking and the words. Great vocal clarity, wonder if the guitar is a bit over mixed? What kind of mic are you using? I do not mean to be critical, just inquisitive.

Sorry not to get back to you sooner
but thanks for the input. I am using two 451b AKG mics!

This was one of those spur of the moment tunes that I wanted to upload because everybody was doing woodstock stuff and I being in the navy at the time. I thought the closest I could come to woodstock through music was to play and sing about my 1969 navy experience and around that time as well.
