Description I was wanting to try a hip hop song again (only ever done one before), so I looked for a Spitlogic track to play with. He is always kind enough to post a share alike acapella. definitely not old skool hip hop, but i like the way it turned out. i'm a big fan of hip hop but not all that clever with producing a track; hopefully that will change.this is an experiment with a sampler that i just got (cross fade loop synth - see the free samplers 4u thread i started).

i used a bagpipe sample that i played with and some granular stuff, as well as a sample of me playing a guitar with an ebow). i hope you like this Spitlogic. I was a little nervous to do this one as you are a huge talent and I didn't want to mess it up. here is the original:

Production..
.. is phat. I've always had a soft spot for hip hop too, but can never pull it off. My cousin always wants me to make beats and samples and sounds for him to flow over but they always sound so painfully white. you know?
anyway man, this is pretty cool. I like the sounds you chose to work with. not the usual, cliched, do it yourself hip hop sounds. good ideas implemented. long story short, I like it.

i love hip hop and like you say it's a hard one to just pull out of thin air. i tried to go with something kind of electronic sounding versus traditional, although that bass line could have been lifted from an old jackson 5 record. i almost gave up on this, and then just started deleting things from the mix and ended up at this point. thanks so much for listening.

dajama said 245 days ago
Very cool
I listened to this, liked it, went back and listened to part of the original a cappella version, came back to this again, and loved it!! This is quite an achievement, nice blend of terrific beats, lovely, thick rich bass, and some nice spacey sounds all blending together to create something kicking! Very impressive. Great rhymes, spitlogic, and excellent music Michael. Kudos. Peace.

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks dajama
it was really fun doing this one. i love making noise and this gave me plenty of opportunities. spitlogic is what makes it worth listening too though. wish i had some more of his tracks to play with. thanks so much for listening.

spitlogic is amazing, it's not hard to do something listen-able when his vox are on top of it. thanks for giving this one a chance.

master DJ Michael.
interesting sounds that you have incorporated. you're such a mad scientist at times

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks vic
this truly was like going into the lab and playing around. i just hope that spit likes it. thanks for listening.

Macaudion said 245 days ago
Well now...
I hate it when I llike someone else's version better than mine but I do like that in the end, I get to feel good about it.

You just blew it up, dude.

Nice one. Now, how did you turn his voice into such an instrument? Not that it wasn't already but somehow, the vox work sounded more musical to my ear.

Nice one mister M2! Thaniks! Dion

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks macaudion
i need to listen to your version (somehow i missed it). as far as his voice goes: i compressed everything to death (part of hip hop isn't it?), but i doubled his voice, and then put one track through a pitch shifter and some echo and then mixed it really low under the straight vocal. i can hear it, but it's not real up front. i ran the beats through camel crusher (my fave freeware for loops); it warms things up a bit,but can also mangle them beyond belief if you like. thanks for listening.

Macaudion said 244 days ago
M2
hey thanks for the thorough explanation. That was really helpful. The lab work on the vocals really enhanced this. Plus w/ how the lows and echos of the percs kinda harmonized w/ Spit's perc-like rapping, it made it groove in cool way.

You done good! Thanks! D

tuff groove
I like the feel of this version, u jam on all your songs, I like ur style B.E.

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks B.E.
very kind of you. this one is a part of the learning process for me. i like to do collabs and re-mixes as it gives me a chance to improve and work out of my comfort zone. thanks again.

craft said 245 days ago
this is good stuff
Great production... Well done

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks
so glad you liked. appreciate the kind words.

bud said 244 days ago
Excellent groove Michael
your restraint is what makes this such a good mix - keeping the space around the beat and the sparing use of additional voices.

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks Kevin
there was a ton of crap all over this at first and then i just sat down and started editing it to death. didn't want to cover up that awesome voice. that new sampler made it really easy to make sounds; too easy. i ended up with like 12 tracks at first. it's pretty sparse now and i'm glad you can appreciate that. thanks for listening.

rsorensen said 244 days ago
nice
first, thanks for turning me onto spitlogic. great stuff there!
secondly, everything you added fits perfectly into the song, both spatially and in the way it works with the lyrics. Excellent work. I've found that a lot of the beauty of songs like this are in their simplicity. though there certainly is a place for big walls of sound too in the right track (ie. 'brothers gonna work it out'). Anyway, very well done. I can already hear a whole record's worth of you guys teaming up.

michael2 said 244 days ago
thanks
i like simplicity and i use it due to technical limitations. the cool thing about those old PE records was that the wall of sound was so trashy and gritty. it was like punk rock at the time. thanks for listening, and Spit is the s#@t.

said 244 days ago
Right on!
I'm familiar with spitlogic's killer vocal track. You did a fantastic job with the music, I thought. This has a nice flow with subtle twists to the backing music that keep it interesting. Nice production too!

Heightened said 244 days ago
Wow!!!
This is unbelievable! And I don't even like rap all that much. Some rap yes but this really is ultra cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lennon714 said 244 days ago
right
when I think you're going to zig, you zag. This is unexpected but a real treat. I'm picking up a Gorillaz vibe from this. Especially when the bagpipe/ebow guitar comes in. I think everything works well. You built a solid beat and some interesting bits to push spitlogic's performance. I think that's my favorite part. You didn't take a spitlogic track and lather shit all over it until it was sound with some flow somewhere in there. Good job!

davisamerica said 243 days ago
loved spitlogic's original
and this just adds a new direction .. well played out michael ... no regrets ...is cool

This is
very Kool and well done, the vocalist is a together dude, and I really appreciated the fact that he did not have to swear his way threw the song...refreshing...

spitlogic said 243 days ago
What an honor
The new versions of this song keep getting better and better. I think I may compile them up to a megamix (once I get my equipment together). Thanks for this micheal

Nick_Flash said 243 days ago
yeah
this is a hell of a first take at hip hop. This has a nice flow and is a great listen. I'll have to check out some Spitlogic after this.

Michael - you're just flippin' amazing. Whatever you try turns to gold. Cool collab here. This isn't usually a genre I'm drawn to, but I LOVE this (which means I need to open my mind a bit!) So thanks for opening my mind - you're just a genius! Thanks
