Description From ledebutant: This song definitely wouldn't exist without macjams. There's the obvious fact that Matt and I met here, so our band wouldn't even exist were it not for this place, but the sheer evilness of Dr. Liolisheer inspired us to work feverishly (for me literally at some points, because I had the flu)on this song and took us in new directions. Lyrically, I was influenced heavily by the Woodstock festival that's running right now, too. The Orbiting would never have played Woodstock (except after someone got some bad acid, perhaps) but I'm stubborn and I wanted to participate in some way, so I used the lyrics of this song to be Woodstockian and the style is different than what I usually write. I often feel so powerless in the face of so much that needs fixing in the world and it's paralyzing. So, this song is a reminder to myself that one person can be powerful standing next to others.

If this song isn't enough to crush Dr. LIOLI the fact that I'm making my guitar-playing debut on this should be enough to make him fall to the ground screaming in pain. Go easy on me, guys. :-)

From illuminati: Once again, LIOLI has inspired The Orbiting to make music. Please view this as a work in progress and possibly inspired (on my part) by listening to too much Gary Numan. This marks our first musical collaboration as Lisa composed the framework of the song and I came in and mussed it up a bit. In about a week.

Such a big part of elementary school/kindergarten life in 1961. Nice idea for a concept track. The techno feel gives it a modern setting (the song art is essential). Several of my friends grew up with dreams about nuclear war, dying in a blinding flash, melting like the Wicked Witch; hard for them to shake. I always dreamt of surviving unscathed, forging a new world, being one of a handful of heroic Adams. I'm really glad my brain is such a happy place. Enjoying track. Nice guitar.

delivered with class and style regardless of LIOLI-7. Very cool song here you two, I congratulate you on a wonderful job together. As far as the guitar playing is concerned, I didn't notice anything that distracted me in any way. That simply means it was just fine in the context of the song, and you can't ask for more than that.

Thanks for joining Lioli-7 and for this really great song. I think you just put the final nail in the evil Doctors coffin my friends.

Beautiful, eloquent music crafted from a tiny lump of coal... the doc never had a chance.

Haunting, quiet and restlessly urgent... a gentle reminder that beyond the goofy evils of a pretend mad doctor, there are genuine evils that fill our newspapers, parade across our TV screens and crack the skies of our worlds. And perhaps we may indeed be close to powerless, but not completely - one voice, one song, one hand held aloft to be counted can be a beginning... or a continuation... of something better. This song is such. Thank you for a characteristically stylish and resonant piece...

(And for helping finish Dr. Lioli off. Doing it with a purple guitar and a pink daisy strap just makes it even better!).

	Alarm Clock Percussion I was not a fan of the processed percussive drum(?) during the verses. I liked the instrumentation in the choruses more. Vocal reminded me a little of Bjork's texture. I especially liked the crescendo in the end. Good message and lyrics and overall an excellent production.

Yay! So happy that someone mentioned that little homage. I'm not surprised it was you, Christopher. I've had the guitar for a little over a year, but have only really noodled around on it. The person who was teaching me kind of lost interest and was teaching me in kind of an unusual way (so I've been told). The first thing I learned was Travis picking, then playing in Open G, then hammering on and hammering off, then I learned the chords to Knockin' on Heavens Door and that was it for my lessons, pretty much. So, I've kind of poked along a bit on my own, but have had so much else on my plate the last six months that I haven't been able to practice or play. It was fun to pick it up again and I'm back to trying to teach myself. I'm so happy you liked the song! Yay!

I get around to listening to some songs here! I haven't been able to for a while just due to general busy-ness with my own things. I really don't know what I've been doing, just lingering around, I guess, trying to finish up project or five I have lying around, but anyway, this is a pretty supa. I leave of the dupa, since it hits the red the whole second half of the song and please see http://www.macjams.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=21;showtopic=121180 for more about that. But the voice is great, the mix is great, the concept is great!

Jim, you are totally right
about the volume heading into the over-volumed zone a bit at the end. I deliberately automated some of the elements to rise a bit at the end. My intent was to go back and reduce the volume of the whole piece. However, being semi-new to Logic, once I added automation, I didn't know how to do it without taking down every little dot. So, being short on time I didn't. I master using Ozone and have figured out that if I keep the volume down, the mix stays out of that oversaturated area, so that is generally our goal.

Since we uploaded, I worked out that I could have routed all the outputs for the music bed to a bus, all the vocals to a bus, then easily lower the overall levels. Does anyone know if this is the best way to handle this sort of situation? Please let me know, I'm all ears.

All that said, to be honest, I think the mix, for as little time as we had, is fairly smooth and sounds pretty good on my ipod. And the ending was supposed to push the limits a bit.

Should be simpler:
Why wouldn't just pulling down the Out 1-2 slider in the Mixer work? That should reduce the overall gain of your bounce. I'll have to take another look in Logic once I get home from work to see if it does indeed. The other thing you could do is insert a gain adjusting plugin like FreeG into your Out 1-2 track and reduce the gain with a plugin.

The mix is very smooth and not harsh, just a bit loud sounding. Sort of like the latest Bruce Springsteen album, sonically, to me. Even with Ozone it's possible to get an overly compressed master, and especially when coming out of Logic. But you know me, Lisa, I'm almost as picky as you sometimes.

BTW, I didn't hear the loop and I didn't hear any clams with the guitar. Good job!

	That would most likely work just fine and when I woke up this morning I thought the same thing. I think my reasoning earlier, for controlling the bed volume and the vocal volume separately probably derives from fatigue. Or maybe it was my concern not to lose some of the subtler items in the mix. Lowering the Output 1-2 works. Matt

If you get any more sexy, your head is gonna fall off and roll real fast up a steep hill. Weird I know, but it's the only fart that my tired brain would poot for me tonight.

A bit of a departure for you and Matt but it's as good, if not gooder then the place from whence you've come, I'd say. And by the way, that would have been a good hit of acid, according to what's left of that part of my brain that can still muster up some kinda memory about it. However, it's nice to be able to listen to this and head to some of those far off places without worrying about getting the vampire crunchies. (that's what my best friend would call that sideways backward spin up in a motionless twisty twirl action toward the butt end of a REALLY good "ride". Dat be around the time the sun was about to rise. - Hey... you guys took me there...

I'm totally dign' the way ya perc'd this w/ the electro scratchy, buzzes and all. The synth work on this has my ear too. Really nice mix of everything. Ya get good marks for originality too.

Quite the trippy grooven little number. I'm at a fifth listen and still intrigued. You could say that I'm kinda dign' it.

Congratulations to both of you! This is a pretty special piece, by my system's accounting of it.

	wow guys this is excellent work. i like how you use that synth drum sound during the verses and then move into more traditional instrumentation in the choruses. everything sounds great to me, including your guitar playing. a little Marley referencing too (my fave song of his is "Selassie is the Chapel." check it out). you guys did a great thing here.

sure i fav'ed and commented on this one, cause you guys are a band, and as lisa spoke so eloquently on my page, this fact can get overlooked from time to time among the dozens of collaborators existing here on this site. i liked the sparsity of the song; i mean if you were going to write a song about this subject matter, sparseness and simplicity works best. your guitar playing reminded me of some of john lennon's solo works. while not a big beatles fan, i did respect his tasteful use of simple chords and sparse instrumentation during his solo years. really nice song, and a great mix. are you using logic? i just got LE8, and have not even had the time to break open the box. hopefully i will hear more good things from you both soon.

One of the best I ever heard
When I say that this is one of the best songs I ever heard I do not say that lightly. I was (years ago) a music director at a pop radio station. I would review perhaps 40 new releases every week and choose the 2 or 3 that might get played. This would make my list for sure. This has a great sonic statement, flawless production, great lyrics, and is timeless in its lyric content. It is about TODAY, no matter what day it is 'cause they are still stealing our dreams. Only one thing I would change about the song and that would be a shouted WAKE UP! right at the 2:56 mark followed by a screaming guitar solo. This song has a lot of potential.

Thank you SO much for that comment. It's incredibly endorsing to hear that from you and it helps so much to help us not to feel as though we're being big dorks when we make music. I was very, very uncomfortable with these lyrics because I really try to be very specific and include a lot of imagery and there's none of that here at all, but it didn't really suit what I was trying to do with the song, so I went ahead and wrote them this way. It's very cool to hear that you think the lyrics are timeless. That was definitely a goal and you're right, those jerks are always stealing someone's dreams. Matt did so much to take my skeleton and guitars and turn it into a 'sonic statment'. I'm so happy you liked it so much because it's definitely one of my favorites I've ever been involved in. Thank you so, so much.

Also, your arrangement suggestion is awesome. We've been considering opening this up for remixes the way we did with Saturnine a couple of years ago, but have to figure out how much work it will be because this was done in Logic Studio rather than Garageband, so maybe someone will do it and come up with a really cool electric solo. That would be great!

	Collage I really like the movement of different sounds through this piece. The intro and the guitar chorus at the end don't necessarily fit together, but the "sound-flow" in between these two sections connects them, somehow---cool! 	Death to LIOLI God Bud, you have no idea how hideous that strap and guitar look together. It's bright pink nylon and the daisies look to have been painted on somehow. The guitar is gorgeous, however, has a really neat matte finish, that's slightly iridescent. I love it. I'll be using it again and will find a way to use it in song art, by golly.

	So you can't find the loop! It's there, but Lisa mashed it and smashed it into a state of sonic submission. You may hear it in the intro providing the modulation and it makes a return after the 2nd chorus where things sort of fall apart before they are gathered back together in our final chorus.
