Description My entry begins with a 20 second intro using the dreaded 80’s Rock Guitar 01 loop in it’s original untweaked glory matched with a handful of suitable Apple Loops to create a “straight from the box” piece of GB collage.

What comes next is the result of mindless and tedious cutting and pasting. The bed that fades in is the original original loop cut into the smallest bits possible. Each of it’s eight beats was divided into 32 equal sections using the timeline division tool. Then each bit was selected and copied four times. I watched the entire film “The Professional” while doing this on my laptop – it was a lot like knitting. The result was that the loop consisted of 1024 fractal like sections. I then created three tracks of this loop and tweaked two for variety and depth of texture with eq and such. The third track was run through the Automatic Filter effect on 16th Pulse and tweaked to create the slightly funky stacatto synth hits you hear.

The rest is Drums on Demand loops, two live bass tracks, and two live electric guitar tracks using the Line 6 Toneport for effect. In the end I added a subtle track of synth to the middle section played on an Oxygen8 midi controller.

The things we do for love.

Thanks Rik.

OMG
like knitting, only much more manly. this is so stoney and psychedelic. i love the guitar tone you added to it, and the fact that the riff is unrecognizable is perfect for me. great job; now on to the rest.

bud said 285 days ago
Hide that loop - subvert the system
I'm not the only who went that route. I appreciate the stoney and psychedelic comment - always makes me smile. Thanks.

dajama said 285 days ago
Very cool
Once again, clear proof that there is no end to the creativity and imagination of MacJammers. To take such a Basic riff and turn it into this is, quite simply, inspiring. Nicely done. Peace.

bud said 285 days ago
Like another Smoothie?
The blender is still plugged in. Thanks for dropping by and being so kind.

Holy cow!

What a concept. The doctor has been sliced into ribbons!

thanks

bud said 285 days ago
Knit one pearl two
press puree and add distortion. Presto - one dead Dr. Lioli.

JupiterMusik said 285 days ago
radical
This is amazing. I could never do something like this man.

bud said 285 days ago
I don't know about that -
you got off to a pretty good start - and never's a very long time. Thanks for the kind words.

davisamerica said 285 days ago
right then
those of us still stuck at the festival appreciate your heroic efforts to save music and humanity from the evil Dr. Lioli.... and doing it with such cool ....really liked this my friend!

bud said 285 days ago
I did this on the brown acid
can't you tell?

Skean said 285 days ago
You Rock
Heavy man you really ROCK... Cheers

bud said 285 days ago
I'm honored that you would think so
your powers against the evil Dr. are awesome.

datafunk said 285 days ago
man
that was something!

gregd said 285 days ago
Those drums and guitar!
Wow. Love the glitch-spin you did to that wretched loop, Bud. You rock my world. This track is right up my alley: experimental and accessible--much more accessible than the Fred Frith album I bought today, but too different to compare.

Nice work.
-greg

bud said 285 days ago
Thanks Greg - You're much too kind.
Which Frith album? I used to buy them all in the eighties - and listen to each one at least once.

gregd said 274 days ago
Frith and Glennie
The Sugar Factory. Evelyn Glennie and Fred Frith did a bunch of recording in an old German sugar factory for Evelyn Glennie's DVD, apparently. Then, Fred Frith took a hard drive full of music back to his studio near San Francisco and started mixing around with it until he produced this album. It's wild. He released it in 2007. You should give it a listen if you're still into that god awful noise :p

Hold on
Love the changes and the phyced out bass guitar freakiness love it this is what its all about love the layered bass, bass leads are the future just great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bud said 285 days ago
Glad you picked up on the layered bass
I thought about you as I was doing it - knowing you had busted your guitar. Bring it on - double deep.

announcer said 285 days ago
Cough Cough
Like ... Ya ... man ... (sucking sound) (cough, cough) far out dude.

Nice guitar work. Good cutting. How did you keep the computer from choking?

bud said 285 days ago
Interesting you should ask
my iBook couldn't really play the whole loop at tempo so I worked on it slowed down and with no effects. Then I upped the tempo when i was done and saved to iTunes. I dropped the resulting aiff into my G5 and took it from there. The effects got kinda deep at that stage and I had to bounce each of the three tracks down again to continue. Just like the old days of 4 track.

announcer said 284 days ago
Good to remember old tricks
Some of my students are amazed when I tell them some of the old tricks that they can still use today, like bouncing some mixed tracks to free up processing power. Same technique as bouncing to free up tracks in the analog days.

sloparts said 285 days ago
Let the Dirge begin
I almost pity the poor demented soul has this piece rolls into his ears and fries his evil brian on his own loop. This is an awesome track on any level Bud. You got him good now, he won't be able to ever challenge the MacJams Super Loopers after this.

Ed

bud said 285 days ago
Right on Ed
it's a regular funeral march - and it ain't my funeral. Thanks for dropping by.

I wish...
...I understood this, Bud. But I appreciate the fun you must have had knitting it together. Very impressive stitching.
Peace.
Paul

bud said 285 days ago
Thanks Paul -
you're always very supportive and open minded regarding my experiments. Glad you could make it to the loop fest.

Mystified said 285 days ago
I never was much at knitting...
(Crocheting is much less tedious!)

Very nice patterns that you've woven into this 'totally cool' groove!!
I'm so impressed by all the entries! Fantastic creativity :)

I'm with michael2 on this one: very stoney and psychedelic, indeed.

So well done!!

bud said 285 days ago
I agree with you -
everyone has brought prodigious efforts to this challenge. I love all the different approaches taken. Thanks for dropping by and commenting. My next loop I'll try crocheting.

said 285 days ago
Knitting
Stitches. Great embroidery of parts to hold things together - the screaming guitar is a super touch for chills & thrills....

bud said 284 days ago
Thanks Harold
Nice of you to stop by - this LIOLI is cool - dug your entry.

chikoppi said 285 days ago
Laceration and Licks
That loop is atrocious and deserves nothing less than 32 cuts! This has an infectious "underground-indie" vibe. Great bass! I'm totally jealous of the tone. Sharp, laid-back guitar work.

bud said 284 days ago
Oh man Brian -
I'm still working on the clue to your awesome entry - thanks for stopping by. I think it would be fun next time to have a loop benders challenge. The only thing that can be used in the song is the loop.

Alannah said 285 days ago
This LIOLI loop ....
.. has taken me on a musical journey which I had forgotten existed ... back to MY DAY ! hahahaha Back to before I drank a more sophistocated brand of beer. Now my hangovers cost about $25.00 a case versus the $3.25 I think I used to pay back in the day! PARRRRRTEEEE !

bud said 284 days ago
$3.25 a case is a good price
where were you back when I was drinking? Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

bud said 284 days ago
Hey Philip -
I gotta stop by your place - it's been too long. You're the guitar god and mixmaster deluxe in my book. Thanks for stopping by.

echoroom said 285 days ago
Sleazy and nice
and sharp as spice. Loops or not, this is a killer - great guitars and drums, and that throbbing screech that works through the song at the start - dunno what is is but its discordant but catchy. Why didnt you sing on this man - would've really topped it off?

steve

bud said 284 days ago
That throbbing screech is the tortured loop
I tried singing - but nothing worked - and I also like dit being relatively empty in the middle. Perhaps a remix one day.

Dj French Toast said 285 days ago
Dude this is bad ass
I really dig this man ...your bassline is off the hook as usual and you use of the crappy loop is fantastic . Nice knitting job .

bud said 284 days ago
Thanks Benny
you totally rocked this challenge.

Vic Holman said 284 days ago
woah
god of thunder and cheese graters!

Bluesy and psychedelia all at once.

Ladies and gentlmen... Bud, live from the Filmore. Way too cool!

bud said 284 days ago
Cheese graters!
In my next piece I'm gonna play nails on a chalkboard. Nice comments from the king of psychedelia - thanks.

Diviner said 284 days ago
Very good
I'm impressed. I like the laid back approach with the underlying cut up loop underneath. Brilliantly played bass and guitar. Very cool.

bud said 281 days ago
Thanks for stopping by -
laid back is my default mode - I'm feeling my age lately.

WillyB said 284 days ago
oops...
...I listend to this shortly after you posted and I was blown away. I thought I commented, but I came back for another dose (on my home computer w/the bose headset), and realized I didn't comment.

Soooo anyway - GREAT entry Bud. Guitar work is fantastic. And the overall sound has a slight Trower feel, with your original brand of trippiness as a bonus. Definitely a lot for me to learn from here. Oh, and nice touch with the artwork too! :-D

bud said 281 days ago
I appreciate the nod to the artwork
I loved Amadeus and the image of Salieri is very haunting. Glad you dug the song too.

said 284 days ago
Love it!
The transition from the intro I like very much. (after that it's killer!) Really nice track, sir!

bud said 281 days ago
Why - Thank You Mr. D
This was a fun project.

said 284 days ago
Ohhh Mannnnnn
...I'm in a daze wondering how that gawdawful loop got turned into so many different interpretations of wild ideas. THIS is why I missed LIOLI so much... this one just ri-i-i-ides, drifting on electric molasses and sunglasses, floating over that incredible bass line and smoking the place out. The strobes that move in and out of my brain are different colors...

What a trip. Heh hehh,,,hehhhh...

bud said 281 days ago
What you smokin' Rik?
Can I have some? Thanks for runnin' the show this time - you did a fantastic job.

tokai said 283 days ago
oh yeah
nice groove, lots of different sounds happening here, sounds like you did a lot of work to this. ace! cheers

bud said 281 days ago
This was fun
most of the work was in the beginning wrestling the loop to the ground - the rest was quick.

Doug Somers said 283 days ago
This is
just too cool, especially now that I know how you cut up the loop to create the effects. Laid back hot guitar, slow driving bass and drums, and these little dabs of sound from the left and right make this an easy groove to settle into. The Doctor doesn't have a chance.

Thanks Bud.

Keep well,
Doug

bud said 281 days ago
Very nice of you to comment Doug
Everybody went beyond expectations on this challenge. I was happy to be part of it.

Ejh said 283 days ago
Gee, if it's this much fun...
Maybe I should do one of these loop things m'self someday...

I love the live guitar playing over this, and the live bass, too...

It's got plenty of edge, but this is also really meditative in feel... I know it's one that I'll come back to...

Ed

bud said 281 days ago

Cool how all that artificial madness acts as a great sound bed for some very spontaneous sounding jamming for the live tracks. Total package is music to my ears. So long Dr L

Thanks

Big sound
Really enjoyed this Bud - haven't relly gotten into LIOLI this time around, but what I've heard has been really impressive - this being among the most so.

Just a very good listen.

Is the standard getting better and better here at MJ or what?!

Neil

Macaudion said 279 days ago
Fierce!...
No foreplay or anything..., just hop right into it... What a guy... I like the way that happened the second and third time around but by then, the previous listens served up as the "recommended" foreplay of sorts.

I'd say that you're wrong about the task being of a mind that is less...
Certainly, a bit of mindful thinking went into the task of composing this. I did get a hit of the purple dots in this, though... And was the drum work mindless too?... The bass?...Tedious, yes! Mindless, I think, not! What were those monstrous bigger than bite sized chunky sounds that you had syncopated and fearlessly panning from ear to ear. Nice touch!

Very nice listen, Bud! Sorry that it took me so long to make it to the ride. Nice one!

Thanks! Dion

said 278 days ago
Jaw dropping GOOD!
You rock Bud! I don't know what to say here man...Seems like anything I might attempt to say will only fall short. I need some new adjectives!

So pardon we while I go have my jaw hoisted up from the floor!

Be well man!

Youra said 274 days ago
Clever and soulful
Great idea to present the loop before blowing it away into tiny pieces ! Drumming sets everything right, and the whole atmos really catchy. Great looming bass too. Seems your guitar work is constantly improving, in all direction, since the first track I listened from you. Thanks to share this very inspired moment, bud.

kingbee said 261 days ago
oh. go on then
Another sterling submission from Bud.
Trying to give everyone on macjams a listen and don't always get to keep up with your stuff which is of it's usual high and excellent standard.
thank you
