Description A song I wrote a long time ago (I'm happy to say...) when the only solution to climbing the walls was hitting the town.
Lyrics Screaming

I’ve been burning some nasty rope
Sucking on grapes and wasting all of my time
I’ve been climbing the walls looking for something to find
I’ve been waiting for some hope

I’ve been going for easy kicks
Talking to fools and heading for the door
Singing off-key and rolling around on the floor
Just learning the same old tricks

I’ve been sleeping like a baby
I close my eyes and I’m not crazy
But I still wake up screaming
Yeah I still wake up screaming

Walking around inside a dream
Spinning my wheels and taking the lower road
Looking around but I never get up and go
No I don’t know what I mean

I’m running out of time
I must be going blind
Because I can’t see the signs anymore

A usual...
Simply awesome!

Beautiful mix... Love the backing vocals and the guitars on either side!

So when do you put this stuff on a CD for sale!? it's that good!

dajama said 249 days ago
Thanks, my friend
Glad you enjoyed this one. You are too kind. The mix on this took a while (and if I'm to be honest, I'm still not really happy with it!) and I'm delighted you think it worked. Thanks also for your kind words about the backing vocals. They ran all the way through the song at one stage. I cut them back. I put them back in. I cut them back again! Glad you like the final version. Thanks as always for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

this sounds so good, i wish i could get acoustic guitars to sound like that. and this is a really nice song. self degradation or just good times? you can only tell for sure when you're by yourself. love that line about "singing off key and rolling around on the floor." i have some live videos that will attest to that. final note, great solo. excellent job.

dajama said 249 days ago
Thanks, dude
I've just been listening to your LIOLI7 entry - great track. I love the sound, and the vocal - very cool. Glad you liked this one. The acoustic sound is my old Alvarez (with newish strings) recorded with an SM58, and then tweaked a bit software-wise. Played with fingers instead of a pick for a change, and I think it worked. I also played the electric lead without a pick. I think it gives it a warmer sound or something. Anyway, happy you liked the sound. Good times? Even I don't know sometimes...Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Peace.

I m enjoyin the guitar and the keys behind...
the deep keys behind .very nice arranged my friend.
the electric lead guitar camem unexpected ...but
very tastey and just fine ...thnx for sharin !

dajama said 249 days ago
Thanks, brother
Happy you liked it. I spent a bit of time playing with that organ sound - I wanted it to be churchy, but not too churchy. Hope it worked. Glad you liked the lead. I had intended all along to do an acoustic solo. Then I picked up the electric to see what would happen. I liked the result, and here it is. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and commenting. I really appreciate your support. Cheers. Peace.

Macaudion said 249 days ago
Outstanding work!
Well that just melted me into a nicely satiated little puddle goodness!

This one will definitely work the magic of replay or is it, that replay will work the magic of this piece.

Pure sweetness. Nice warm qualities throughout and yet, a hunting feeling of having been to such a place before. Yummy guitar work! Very nice vocals! The whole of the composition is soooo refreshing to my system.

Nice, indeed!

Thanks for sharing this, David. And thanks for the free grab, too! Dion

dajama said 249 days ago
Wow, kind words indeed!
I love the idea of the "puddle of goodness"! And the feeling of having been to such a place before - well that means a lot. If anything I come up with connects with the listener, I'm satisfied. Thanks so much for your kind words. I'm delighted you enjoyed this. Thank you for taking the time to listen so carefully and comment so thoughtfully. Cheers. Peace.

Moviz said 249 days ago
This is
moody in a wonderful way, with the opening simplicity and then the added voice and the slow build up... your voice sounds excellent on this as does the guitar and the whole arrangement. Love where the racy drum comes in.... I think this is your best to date, mainly due to the care you've taken in the arrangement and mix.... excellent song and performance, regards M

dajama said 249 days ago
Thank you so much, Maurice
You are way too kind. I'm delighted you enjoyed this one. I'm particularly happy you liked the arrangement. I spent a lot of time playing around with what seemed like a fairly simple song at first! The drums at the end were something that came to me from the ether, and I just couldn't let go of the idea. I toyed with cutting that whole end section out, but when I listened to it afterwards, I felt like something crucial was missing. I guess I was trying to get across the whole idea of being sad and discombobulated but in a club or some other supposedly fun place. Did it work? Who knows. But I'm very happy you liked it. Thanks as always for listening and commenting. I really appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

jiguma said 249 days ago
Top post David!
Lovely acoustic sound for starters David. Also the vocal is really classy - nicely recorded and beautifully sung - although I'd have liked to hear "Singing off-key" with a bum note in it :) String parts work really well also. Lyrics good!

Mix wise, it's (nearly) all good - the far left guitar towards the end is panned a little too far for my taste. May work better if you started it out closer to centre and move it further left when the strings come in.

David, you've made huge progress over the last year. This is an excellent post.
Neil

dajama said 249 days ago
Thanks, Neil
I greatly appreciate your comments and feedback as always. Thanks for the comments on the acoustic sound and the singing. Bum note on "singing off-key" - dammit, why didn't I think of that?! Glad you liked the sound. I see what you mean about the mix of the guitars. I actually had a tough time getting this one right (or as close to right as I ever get it...) and I did a lot of tweaking. I will revisit the guitar panning. Thanks again for your close listening and attention to detail. I'm always keen to hear your input.

I'm greatly encouraged by your suggestion that I've progressed. I'm flattered that you think I have done so, and I think your constructive feedback is one of the elements that has stimulated my evolution. Thanks again. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

I'm delighted you enjoyed this. Thanks for the nod on the drums. The idea just stuck to me and wouldn't let go. I'm glad I stuck to it. Just been listening to your latest. Amazing musicianship and creativity as ever. Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Suckin on grapes
Ive been doin that too.. This is just great love the feeling in this the lyrics and the way it is sung love the fuller Ive been sleeping like a baby part. Excellent straight to the Ipod Thanks!!!!!! Oh by the way If you are sleeping like a baby Your not sleeping much ... Love the lead !!!!!!

dajama said 249 days ago
Thank you, my friend
Enjoy those grapes! Glad you liked this, and thanks especially for the nod on the lead. It's a little different from the usual sound I go for, but that's got to be a good thing, since I usually end up doing the same thing over and over again (due to the fact that I can't really play lead!) As for the sleeping part - you got that right. I actually wrote these lyrics before becoming a dad, so I let them stand. It should really be "I've been sleeping like a teenager..." Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

wow david
love the guitar work and ur vox IS killer .... mix is envious..me .. like this one man ... good work here D

dajama said 248 days ago
Thank you, my friend
Delighted you like this. Thanks for the kind words about the vocal. It's kind of right up front and exposed and I lack confidence in my voice, so it's encouraging to hear that. I appreciate your support as always. Thanks a million, dude. Peace.

echoroom said 249 days ago
All killer , no filler
You just are on such a roll David. Another great mix and a wonderful restrained vocal - reminds me a little of INXS. The whole mood of this isclose and moody - great use of reverb. Catchy and smartly arranged (the piano and string part at the end at great, in fact the whole end section is unexpected and really well written) - total pro, dont you know.

steve

dajama said 248 days ago
All killer, no filler
I love that! A true compliment. Thanks for your kind words, man. Glad the moody vibe came across. I wanted to get across the downbeat vibe without the song being too dreary. INXS, eh? That's a flattering comparison - never a huge fan, but always loved Huthence's vocal. And frankly, a compliment about my singing from you is truly flattering. Glad the ending was unexpected. All part of my cunning plan! Thanks, again, Steve for your listening and commenting. Your encouragement really boosts me. Cheers. Peace.

Roxylee said 248 days ago
I love your voice
You could sing the phone book and it would sound good. Fortunately, you write absorbing and heartfelt lyrics, which makes it all great.
:-) Such quality production, too. The addition of the strings makes it even more touching.

dajama said 248 days ago
The phone book, eh?
Now, there's a thought...Hee hee. Thank you, Roxy, you are way too kind. I'm happy you enjoyed this one. The strings were added early - they're a bit mournful, but I guess I always felt they were integral to the track. I'm glad you think they work. Thanks especially for your kind words about my singing. You have a wonderful voice, and I'm flattered to think you find my own warbling unobjectionable. Thanks again. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Vic Holman said 248 days ago
great tune David
acoustics and electrics played and sounding pretty amazing. as well as the vocals. heck, the whole composition is great. the ending section is pretty epic. (kind of reminds me of how supertramp ended their title song from their first album creating a BIG finish)

It's more of a headphone thing, but near the end I would of brought in the right sided acoustic earlier to balance the left acoustic. But, it's such a minor detail.

Totally awesome track!

dajama said 248 days ago
Thanks, Vic
I'm delighted you liked it, man. Thanks for the kind words about the guitars especially - coming from you, that's really something! Glad you enjoyed the ending. Not familiar with the song you mention, but I will endeavor to check it out. I see what you mean about the panning of the acoustic at the end. In the early mixes, it was front and center, and then I just tried it hard to the left and ended up leaving it there. I may revisit it as I mess around with it in the future (I never leave songs alone - I'm a tweaker....) Thanks again for stopping to listen and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate your encouragement and feedback. Cheers. Peace.

Great Great sounds
Such a well rounded song, sound wise and content wise, very impressive to say the least....I dig solid bassy ominous waves coming across the headphones. excellent.

dajama said 248 days ago
Thanks, man
Glad you liked this one. I love your description of the bass sounds! That's one of those things that I think sounds cool and when I manage to get that sound (or anything like that sound) on anything I record I'm gleeful. Glad you like it too! Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

There's that PRO sound again!
I don't know how you do it friend. Every post of yours that I've heard sounds soooo pro. Just makes me want to work harder.

Beautiful harmony vocals. The style of this piece reminds me a bit of some of Iain Matthews' work.

Excellent!

Be well!

Great vocals and guitar work on this one Dave. The music carries the sentiment well. Nicely done.

. - Harold

dajama said 247 days ago
Thanks Harold
Glad you think the whole thing gelled together well. I take it as high praise that the idea of the words and the music complement each other. I'm working on a song at the moment about a serious subject, but the music refuses to sound anything other than bouncy! Hopefully it'll work as some form of dramatic contrast...or something. Ahem. Anyhoo, thanks a million for stopping by to listen, and for your comment. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

The Total Package!
Dave,
You really are quite a producer. This song has its own legs, but your production here is just super. the gentle mix of orchestral, the piano, the vocals, and I really like the ending. I agree with Mark, whenever a real CD is available, I am plunking down real $$ for your stuff (I can play bass and backup guitar and sing in the tour band too ;-> )
I am never disappointed by one of your posts, on the contrary, they grab
and hold you all the way through. The first instinct is to play them again.
Thank you again,
Stephen

dajama said 247 days ago
Thanks, Stephen
You're way too kind. I'm glad you liked the sound on this one, and I love that you use the word "gentle" because that was part of the challenge for me in mixing this. The song's mood is quiet and, I guess, plaintive, and it's hard to get that right. I added a few things and ended up taking them out because I felt they distracted from the mood. Thanks again for the kind words. You are always so supportive and encouraging and I really appreciate your taking the time. Cheers. Peace.

Ejh said 247 days ago
I don't care how cool a production is...
There has to be some cool song-ness to hang it on.

This is some really awesome song-ness, indeed. Change-ups and shifts and neat production touches, but it never loses the heart of the song. And I really like this song. I was just thinking about a time in my life rather like this, so maybe it's just catching me at a good time, but whatever the reason, I really like this.

Ed

dajama said 247 days ago
Hey, Ed
I'm so happy you connected with the song (although perhaps not so happy that you've had the experiences that helped you connect with it!) and thank you so much for your nice words about the songwriting. Truly, this is what makes me happy - the thought that in my own part-time, amateurish way, I am writing songs, and everything else is secondary to that. If a song resonates with someone, I'm happy beyond reason; if it resonates with someone of your musical ability and sense, I'm ecstatic. Right now, I'm ecstatic. Thanks, man. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Leon said 247 days ago
a gentle scream if there is any...
Man, you know how to create an atmosphere and gradually fill into it.... the drama of a simple guitar then slowly layered with your gentle vocals and harmonies then other instruments pouring in... Plaintive and haunting effect.... lovely voice as always....

dajama said 247 days ago
"Gentle scream"
What a great way of putting it. Thanks for your kind words about the arrangement - I hope it works the way I did it. As for your compliments on the singing - well, from you that's something. I was just listening to your latest - what a set of pipes! It's very cool. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Peter Bauckham said 247 days ago
Excellent!
Your vocals are exceptional on this and the mix sounds very nicely balanced (I would tend to agree with Neil on the panning) but that aside (and only very minor in any case) I think this one of your best productions and a great song. We really do need a CD from you...

Peter

dajama said 247 days ago
Thanks, Peter
It's always a great pleasure to hear from you, and I'm flattered that you like the sound on this. Yours is a discerning ear! A couple of people have mentioned that panned guitar and I'm beginning to wonder if I should redo it. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Glad you enjoyed this, Peter. I look forward to hearing some new music from you sometime soon! Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

I'm also loving that guitar tone. What kind of guitar is that? It's well played and resonates beautifully. Cool frantic guitar break.

dajama said 245 days ago
Hey, man
Thanks for stopping by. Glad you liked the song, and enjoyed the lyrics especially. Do you mean the acoustic or the electric guitar? The acoustic is an Alvarez 5047, and the electric is a Maya (basically a 1970s - I think - Japanese Les Paul copy) I love 'em both, and I'm glad you like the sound! Thanks again for stopping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

futzpucker said 246 days ago
Strong
I admire how dynamically you arranged this song. Your use of instruments is very effective. Is that a cello I hear? The combination of the sounds you called upon create an undeniable atmosphere.

It seems like you are really finding your voice, making music with confidence and purpose. There's a strength in this song, which might be considered ironic, given the lyrics. On the other hand, surrender and acknowledgment are ingredients out of which strength is born...

Typically high level music from you, David. Congratulations on this success.

dajama said 245 days ago
Thank you, my friend
I'm very grateful for you considered and thought-provoking comments. The lyrics certainly do not evoke strength, but maybe the low point (and, as you say, acceptance) are the beginning of the upswing to a more solid footing. I'm delighted you enjoyed the instrumentation and arrangement, especially since you are particularly adept in those areas (I really enjoyed your latest, by the way - a real tribute to the lasting power of love) and, more than anything else, I'm flattered you think I'm finding my voice. What greater compliment could there be? Many thanks. I appreciate your taking the time to listen and comment. Cheers. Peace.

Doug Somers said 245 days ago
What a beautiful arrangement
How do you continue to roll out these pro-sounding gems one after another? Great art David, so expressive and skillfully assembled. And just when I think 'wow, this is amazing' the drums kick in and you take it up another notch.

Absolutely brilliant.

Many thanks,
Doug

Excellent track
I really enjoyed this one! I've been so hard-pressed for free time lately and have been missing out on great tunes like this. Thanks for dropping a comment on one of my tunes and getting me over here to listen. A copy of this is going on the iPod for sure!!

dajama said 237 days ago
Thanks indeed

Apart from the fact that life does tend to get in the way, there is also the sheer volume of great music in this place. I'm way behind on stuff I want to listen to! Anyway, really enjoyed your latest, and thanks again for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

excellent
wow - that first line totally took hold of me.
what a sadly beautiful melody. your vocal is really a fine thing - the verses are mixed so yummily. i like the higher doubling of you on the chorus, but my ear wants that verse with your lone lead - i think alone the mood is emphasized, while the chorus is exactly where i want that extra voice. i truly enjoyed the slow heavy pounding piano, bass and the driving percussion at the wonderfully long outro.
just an excellent creation!

You are way too kind
I love the phrase "sadly beautiful" - I take that as high praise. I'm extremely flattered by your kind words about my singing. Coming from you, it really means a lot. I'm especially happy the choices I made as far as the differences between the verses and chorus (and the extended outro) worked for you. Delighted you enjoyed this. Many thanks. I really appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

Tried to email
but for some reason it is disabled... So I'll post here.

I have been listening to many of your tracks very carefully as I believe I can learn a WHOLE BUNCH from the way you pull things together and make some amazing music.

I just listened again to Screaming in my Bose headphones. My wife has been using them. I put them on and cranked this track and oh wow... simply oh wow...

There is stuff working in this track that I didn't hear the first few times with either speakers or lousy headphones.

This is really good stuff! I hope you will keep posting as this stuff is really great. I've got these tracks at 5 stars on the ipod!

Thanks again for checking out my efforts. I hope I can continue to improve. In my opinion, you don't have much room left! I mean that in good way! Your stuff is so amazingly great I'd pay gladly CD prices for it!

Thanks again!
