Description This is a song from Greenwich Village's hardcore band 'numb$kull', who asked me to produce a 3-song demo for them. They'd never been in a studio setting before so it was quite an experience for all of us. Here's what brash, outspoken lead singer/guitarist Joey Saint Agony said about 'War on War':

"@#!&*! man.. you took all the life outta this song, you silly @$%#*. Sounds like complete rubbish. I do like all the feedback nonsense though."

More numb$kull tracks to come.
Lyrics War On War

We lost the war on drugs
Now there's a war on terror
We say they'll mass destruct
With weapons that ain't there

We send our bombs and tanks
We send our best defense
It's time to get involved
And f the government

Let's steal a DC-3
and bring the boys back home
Let's get 'em off the roads
Before they die alone
We are not anti-war
We love America!
But we will rise against
These hidden agendas

We call for
War on War
Can you hear our call?

Now that you're almost through
Pissin' red, white and blue
All over all of the world
There's one thing left to do

So let's take back what's ours
Let's do unto others
It's time to choose a side
This is a war on war

We call for
War on War
Can you hear us call?
Can you hear me call?

Good Title
I like the War on War sentiment since in America we fight a war on everything we don't like, or think is a threat to us.

After your first chorus and Can you hear our call, I thought it might be cool to drop the guitars and maybe just play bass and drums during the next verse.

Good song.

drums/bass
Not a bad idea... Originally everything dropped out but the drums, but then I tried the slide thing and liked it too much to let it go. Maybe when we do this one live we can extend that section and have the bass and drums chugging along for a couple of rotations before the vox and slide come in. That could be pretty cool. Thanks for the suggestion.

Wow!
At first I was crazy pissed that this song had been up all day with no comments, but then I realized it had only been up 2 minutes... Details, eric. That's where the devil is. ANYWAY, I was crazy pissed because this track is deadly. A wall of guitars, great lyrics, and sung extremely well. I'm also very impressed with the lyrical approach. It's a stance that you don't get a lot of and it shows a lot of maturity and depth regarding the subject matter. I see a clever, sleek video for this somewhere. Great GWB soundbites at the end, too. Finding and using outrageous Dubya quotes is like being a kid in a candy store.

lyrics
Thanks eric. This is my first venture into less personal and semi-political lyrics so I'm glad you think they're alright.
And yes, the best (and most difficult) part of this was searching for the perfect GWB quote. There's so many to choose from!

Great song
The guitars have a cool fat sound on this. Your vox sound great as always. The war theme is right on. I need to try to get that vocal effect you're using!

Cool song. Download for sure.

vox
Thanks Nick. I kind of stumbled onto it. The left channel is distorted pretty heavily and the right is clear so you could make out the words. Then I panned them each accordingly so the mix of both was balanced. I still think they could use some tweaking but you gotta stop somewhere right?
Thanks for checking it out.

What a great song!
Fantastic production - love the guitar panning and space in this song and then the build ups.
Excellent performance and writing. Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

:)
Thanks Len! The left/right panning really messes with your ears, doesn't it? For some reason I hear a different chord being played in each speaker, but they're actually both the same. Weird. hmm maybe it's just me.
Thanks for listening!

you know,
i liked the simplicity of the drums. i mean, they are there, perhaps not as big as i would have done them, but its like they do thier job without being busy about it. every time the music has gaps, there they are. i could never get away with such simplified drums. lucky dog....your guitar tone is great. dirt, and grit, and very little compression. this tone is really what dictates the entire song. what rig do you use to get that tone? it sounds like you have a marshall stack with an sm57 mic, and that sucker is so loud, it is melting the mic while it records. vocals are distorted, like they want to get in on some of what the guitar has got goin on, and the whole thing ends with that "i'm the decider" bush retoric i simply love. i mean, how much rope does this guy need?i am glad i am not the only one around here who thinks this guy has a gumpian I.Q.
great song, huge mix, like i said, i would have liked more slam on the drum e.q., but overall, great song

drums
Yeah it's funny - I've been sitting on this song for a while now because I was waiting on a buddy to record real drums for it, but he got too busy. This is actually a temp drum track but I guess it does work with the rest of the song because of it's simplicity (like you said). I still want to track real, more involved drums for this, and it'll be interesting to hear what they add (or take away) from the song.
As for the guitars, the Marshall/sm57 combo sound was definitely what I was going for, but it's just my Firebird through a PodXT Live. I forget which patch, but I messed around with the settings a lot so it probably doesn't make a difference. It's mostly the Firebird that's responsible for the dirty growl.
Thanks for listening and commenting, Allen.

not sure if i totally agree with what ur sayin, but that doesnt mean i don't think this song kicks butt! wow what a wall of sound youve made. i LOVE that slide part too it's so sassy and works with the song so well. especially how it ends with 'oh say can you see'. so clever! really great faved and downloaded!

Love that. Like the subject matter. You're definitely one of the best rockers here. Glad I got to hear this one early.

cool choice of words, and a great future song title! thanks for listening and commenting.

Very cool
I love this. The sound and production are great. The guitars sound terrific, and the drums (temp track or not) fit right in for me. Good lyrics, and very nice vocal performance - your voice has attitude and I like the changeup from near-spoken, low-key on the verses to the more aggressive and in your face on the chorus. Very impressive. Nicely done. Peace.

rsorensen said 250 days ago
vox
Thanks! I really tried to go for a rough-around-the-edges vocal for this one. It was hard to fight the urge to retake a lot of it, actually. I still wince at a couple parts.

oh man
what a wall of sound. i am loving this one. don't get me started on the war on drugs ( i run a needle exchange program). this is getting me amped to tear the head off someone in power. nice panning, vocal sound is perfect, and can i say how jealous i am that you have a Firebird? excellent job. i can't get over how awesome that wall of fuzz is. and keep the slide part.

rsorensen said 249 days ago
wall
thanks michael - really glad you like it. i was worried that the 'wall' might have been too overwhelming, but I decided the song really called for it so I didn't back it off. Regarding the firebird - it hurt me a whole lot financially for a while (big monthly payments with big interest) but it was totally worth it. It brings me much joy. thanks for commenting.

hmmm
not sure that the life is sucked out of this... but I haven't heard this band live so I wouldn't know. Just sounds like a quality punk band to me. Enjoyed it.

Cool that you are producing other people's work and sharing it.
