Keywords Peter Sellers running around in a Nehru jacket (2)Woodstock (21)after party (2)organ (78)jazz (408)1969 (3)Barbara Eden (2)Herbie Hancock (4)Headhunters (2)Herbie Mann (2)Tobin (68)flute (108)
Description This is the long lost proposed soundtrack to "Acid Trips, the Sitcom" (which was never picked up by the networks, sadly, even tho it was billed optimistically as a cross between "I Dream Of Jeanie" and "Easy Rider"), kind of road trip Kerouac video journal that started at Yasgars Farm in 1969 but never ended anywhere. Herbie Hancock lent his vibe, but Sly was unable to show up to the session and so its missing the usual guitar parts. (Anybody want to add them back in?)

This version was captured at the after-party that took place in a Studio 54 look-alike venue that never got any coverage, "The Go-Go Barn," right off Highway 55 outside Bethel, NY.

McBoy added guitar in this version posted a few days later, using my track as a foundation.

'Acid Trips' - the sitcom? that sounds intriguing! Love the err.. 7/8 time, the keyboards are really stylish and the flute jazzy as hell - really enjoyable - Cheers - Rich

TobinMueller said 251 days ago
Cheers
I was trying for something cheery and light, fun (almost funny) yet hip. I think Herbie got kind of buried by the organ in the end. Hope he doesn't mind. Loads of fun, especially the amorphic parts.

magnatone said 252 days ago
Sitcom
Your music is so darned excellent! This is really imaginative, perfectly put together, so complex yet you make it sound easy. GREAT listen!

TobinMueller said 251 days ago
complex yet easy
Thanks. Kind of the 60s in a nutshell, complex and easy. Or were they simple and hard? Both. I rarely start off wanting something to be complex. It just ends up that way. Most of the parts are simple, and fit together, but then I hear something really difficult that might work, and it sits there as a dare and a possibility until I give it a try, and then it all tumbles out like a complex puzzle. Or a multi-colored blacklight poster.

thetiler said 252 days ago
L like how you
use the hammond organ sound with those quick one handed thrusts which gives kind of the feeling for the pic. The melodic avante garde feeling is evident and finely woven in the tune. Great rock-rhythm and really know how to jazz it up and adding that touch of acid sound to give that wood-stock quality. There is always so much quality in what you do Tobin no matter what style you play.

What a great addition to MJ you are, or should I say staple of MJ!

TobinMueller said 251 days ago
staple of MJ
Yes, I feel like bent metal on many a morning. Or that all I do is bind flat things together.

I guess MJ is old enough now to have staples. I'm honored to be considered one. Thanks.

at first i was wondering how in the world you got the flute to sound like that, and then I realized that it was a person. just amazing. this is super cool and actually probably my favorite piece of music that you've done. this is going to be great listening in my car. i actually really like the lack of guitar, can't picture anything but maybe a little rhythm. awesome sounds and vibe is perfect.

TobinMueller said 251 days ago
it was a person
Isn't it crazy how we're at a place in music-making that our expectation is that its all keyboard/guitar driven, or one-man bands? Nothing like real horn/reed players. His paying on this reminds me of that great flute solo on Chicago II. Man, that was my favorite album for years. Very influential to me.

Bad Smells said 251 days ago

lovin the drums so loud in the mix!...puts me right there...great flute...
B3.... and then that synth explosion around 2:30..hehe! It's starting to bum me out but you bring it all back and the trip continues safely.
Loved this! thanks for the download.

Yes, I love that p[art too. Kind of an accident that ended up being a major climactic moment. I love ti when stuff happens like that.

drakonis said 251 days ago
What was in that drink?
Exquisite flute work here... totally makes this a 60's piece. Love the weird sounds you coax out, and the weird time signature keeps this very fresh and funky. It sounded near the beginning like the drums were limiting a little, they sounded a little gritty and distorted, but perhaps that's what you were going for. Groovy vibe... man do I miss Barbara Eden, sigh.

I loved her outfit...

dajama said 251 days ago
Very cool
Love the rhythm - I mean I really love the rhythm, great drum sound - and the organ is terrific, totally sets the tone. Lovely mix too - everything nicely placed, with nothing overwhelming the mix. Lovely sound. Trippy is a word I might use, in a good way. This is excellent musicianship, beautifully conceived, and filled to the brim with good vibes. Nicely done. Peace.

TobinMueller said 251 days ago
Trippy
My older brother's favorite word! I grew up singing at the top of my lungs (no fear of ever being heard, believe me) with his garage band, back when they actually played in garages.

woodstock ...and certanly the groove ..man what a
song you treated us with here a true gem ...far out !

TobinMueller said 250 days ago
Headhunting Feter
Actually, my working title for the track was "Headhunting Feter," a tongue-in-cheek reference to both you as MJ Woodstock Main Man and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, the band that inspired this much more than Sly Stone's band in which Herbie was in during this period. Headhunters still thrill me. Someone will have to do some sort of middle 70s festival some day...

Skean said 251 days ago

Nailed it Tobin!
Love it all, but the organ is the standout for me. Outstanding groove. Wouldn't mind a slight nudge in volume on the bass, but everything is so very cool as is.

Mcboy on guitars here might be the only way a guit will fit.

I love this tune - has a really great vibe
I actually hear a little Ramsey Lewis/Herbie Mann thing happening which is very diggable. Great arrangement and playing - the twisted breaks are outta sight. Can't beat this with a stick.

TobinMueller said 250 days ago
Ramsey Lewis/Herbie Mann
Thanks. I actually discovered Herbie Mann before Hancock, in my listening journeys as a young musician. An underrated heavy.

Jim Bouchard said 251 days ago
TM and the Acid Trips?
That would an interesting side project group for you, maybe, not like you need another project, I suppose. Cool stuff, on the edge of distortion, like the sound guy positioned the SM-57s too close to the snare and Leslie speaker. Or maybe not close enough...
I hear a little Herbie Mann to go along with the Herbie Hancock. For sure there must have been some herb involved!

TobinMueller said 250 days ago
Herb
Never enough herbs to go around, in those days. Maybe that's why Sly couldn't make it. Thanks for your enthusiastic comments! Its been fun reading everyone's reactions.

Loving it in seven four
Your ability to fashion a dynamic flow to this is what elevates it into a level all your own. The playing is masterful, the parts are just right, the sounds are extraordinarily well done and well placed.

And it rocks. This goes to the iPod. Thanks.

TobinMueller said 249 days ago
dynamic flow
Thanks. It took many passes to reach a sense of satisfaction with the flow, since the whole track is perhaps a bit long for the actual compositional content. But I had all sorts of little detail ideas and found a place for all of them. I used a bunch of me gear on this, which was great fun.

gail60 said 251 days ago
really groovy man!
This is too hip! Blows my mind! :)
You are such a master creating and performing music. I am always so impressed by your creativity and unique style. I did not really recall much about Woodstock having any direct impact on my life personally, since I was 9...but truthfully I have now come to realize that it actually did impact all of us - in some form or another with our music. Did that make any sense? Anyway, this is a great song. Lots of smooth jazz and "trippy" sounds. Thanks for sharing this.

TobinMueller said 250 days ago
Woodstock's impact
Woodstock's impact, for me, was never about the music. It was about the potential to change the world, to make something besides power and money (and interventionist wars) central to living. Music was the language, but wasn't the message. The message was love and creativity and above all tolerance with no boundaries; in a context of both personal meaning or social fun. Woodstock was this giant free concert that mingle some of the biggest names with unknowns, where anything goes if it doesn't hurt someone else, on such a large scale it shocked and awed. "Make love not war" always made me think of Woodstock, not Lennon and Oko in white linen. Woodstock was proof it could happen. Proof. That's why it means so much, I think, to so many people. And why, since that moment seems to have slipped away, some are so nostalgic about it.

This one hits the wall and comes back for more
Love the syncopation in this caused by the 7/8 time Tobin. As has been stated before the B3 and flute really works great when played like this. And I love the sound you're getting on the Drums.

I does kind of take off into the realm of the mind and carries you with it. I would not think being on acid and listening to this would be a good thing, it might scramble you mind so bad you'd never come back. Come to think of it, that might not be so bad after all.

Way to go Tobin, this is outstandingly good.

Ed

TobinMueller said 249 days ago
realm of the mind
Thanks. As I get older, my world gets smaller, happier, ambition falls away, simple things satisfy. I think I will end up in the realm of mind more and more. Of course, making my life simpler doesn't relate to making my music any simpler. I am freer to play what I hear. I'm more and more intrigued by the under-conscious aspects of the realm of the mind, mining the dream spaces. This track kind of follows a daydreaming journey, falling below a surface sitcom jingle feel into deeper experiments, then popping back up again. All with a sense of humor, which I find so elusive.

DWL said 250 days ago

I love it for the twin delights of 7/8 time and the B3. As you probably know 7/8 time was put to good use by Pink Floyd in Money and a little bit earlier by Tchaikovsky in his final Pathetique (second movement?).

But it's the B3 that really does it for me. Is it the real thing or a clever patch? Or is that too much to ask?

Please do more like this.

Loop drums
Yes, I think there are 8-10 separate loops, part of a construction kit of funk drumming, that I edited and continually re-order to keep the feel real. I find that manipulating loops, if you use a enough different ones, is a better way to simulate real drumming, rather than using MIDI. I sometimes layer loops with MIDI to get the desired emphasis and groove, etc., but this groove, once edited, fit the whole jam feel I was going for without any MIDI intervention. Thanks.

Astonishing
This is sublime. So hard to single out any one thing for praise, what with the outstanding organ, virtuoso synth, inventive percussion and perfect flute. But the gold gong must go to the composer and arranger. This could easily be a collab between Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones.

groovy man - 7/4

the organ's great. oh wait, no, the flute's great. strange electronic stuff - whoa

i'm smiling now - the 60's, what a strange time that was. will it ever return? will it ever return.

thanks

TobinMueller said 246 days ago
will it ever return?
Knowing the answer, the question is a sad one. Nothing ever returns. A new one has to be made, a new happening, but our time is past. I hope a new one occurs before we're too old to hum along, at least, so we can watch with satisfaction and knowing nods (from a distance?)

Scorpjammer said 248 days ago
Wow!
Awesome tune, T. Serious 60s, but timeless, latin jazz groove, especially with Sal Giorgianni's Dave Valentine-like flute work. Your keyboard work is magnificent and spot on! That B 3 is gorgeous! Great comp.

Yeah man, this one's a real treat!

TobinMueller said 246 days ago
Latin groove
Thanks for mentioning the latin aspect. Yes, the flute makes the piece. I like that it has so many style antecedents, especially the latin hints.

timothy devine said 248 days ago
very hip
man this is so cool.
The organ explores such 'out there' territory as does the whole tune,
Grounded by that jammin flute.
I really dig this
the piano part sounds like they are out of Miles post Bitches Brew era when Corea and Kieth Jarrett backed him for a time.
Chic and Kieth would play off each other in a very cool fasion as you do with the organ and piano
nice Playing

Well done man. Love that big, live bass sound. And that organ is over the top cool. But for me---being a long time Tull fan---was that wonderful flute! Major KUDOS!

Be well friend!

Tull
Yes, never enough of Tull. My favorite is their The Best of Acoustic Jethro Tull album, excellent recording and the acoustic versions bring out the music better. Thanks for the comments.

alanfraser said 245 days ago
At first,
I thought the beat was kind of hokie but it is so perfect from that time! The jazzy kind of noodling over the top is exactly how it went in that 'trip movie' kind of situation as well. The chaotic part is outstanding and I'm guessing that must be when our hero/heroine gets a little frightened by all the spiders coming through the windows. Yep, the tune captures the image exactly but my problem now is shaking the vision of Peter Sellers running around in a Nehru jacket.
