This an amazing piece of work. The sounds all fit together like a perfect jigsaw. And parts of it are like walking through a marketsquare on lsd.Really colourful - excellent.Love it when the rhythm kicks in towards the end.Wowy zowy - Cheers - RG

SmokeyVW said 252 days ago

wow. thanks for your comment. i was going for a kaleidoscope of languages and a musical meeting of east and west...

Travesty said 252 days ago
This is nce
Everything does fit. It is really put together well!

SmokeyVW said 252 days ago

it took a bit of time to piece it together, it's nice to know it shows. thanks

bud said 252 days ago
Put a fork in him - he's done
I hear some people stayed at the farm long after the festival was over. The music had stopped - but not in their heads.
Seriously though - I really like this piece.

part of the title comes from: om mani padme hum

note there are six syllables. see here for lots of info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Om_mani_padme_hum

now consider this ancient trivia (possibly urban myth, but i don't think so):

Why are phone number seven digits? --- The short-term memory capacity for most people is between five and nine items or digits. This is one reason that phone numbers were kept to seven digits (not including area code).

maybe the reason this mantra works so well is that it pretty much fully occupies the left brain?

or maybe not?

(and where does the other part of the title originate?)

thanks!

Is this a journey
or just a trip? Very very cool sir. Nicely assembled into a moving sonic experience.

Thanks for posting, and be well!
Doug

SmokeyVW said 252 days ago

who knows? i was too busy to notice. :-)

i realized at some point that Ravi played Woodstock, but there were no refs to his music in the songs here so far... someone had to do it!

thanks

Ahhhh ...way cool ..the fest need meditation ...
this is impressive work ...the mix of all prayers
a true message here ...this is awesome ..Far out man !

SmokeyVW said 252 days ago

we just needed to hear sitars. well, i did anyway.

some of voice samples aren't really prayers - but that's OK. it's the thought that counts? (i don't actually know what several of them are saying - i hope it's nothing bad.)

thanks!

and thanks again for assembling this project! great idea! great! great! great!

DWL said 252 days ago
More drugs than me then?
Very impressive. A real cohesive whole from such diverse sources.

Excellent

Cheers

Dick

SmokeyVW said 252 days ago

i'm naturally high -- however, i think it was wholly modal rounders.

it's an amazing amount of fun putting together tunes like this. i started from a half-finished piano noodle from a few weeks ago tentatively titled "down". then the need for a sitar piece for Woodstock became apparent. the two notions collided.

but the mix was too sparse. so i raided freesound.org for spoken voices. along the way i found a French chanted prayer. that remixed into part of the piano so nicely i could not believe my ears. after more adjustments, voila!

thanks Dick
peace

Very far out man
this is an unusual piece to say the least, but not altogether something you wouldn't hear at woodstock. Very meditative and ethereal, and also very very good.

Kudos for bring the mind back into the body my friend.

you know, i was thinking someone could actually have pulled this off live by using several tape recorders playing the sound samples... the sitars, piano, and tablas would have been played live.

John Cage could certainly have done it - he was definitely into that sort of concept of musical performance art in 1969.

more recently, The Flaming Lips have done extensions of these sorts of ideas about sonic performance art.

(i often enjoy experimenting on the fringes of music, like this song.)

thanks, glad you liked it.

Wow Smokey - this is amazing. How you made all this work is so beyond where my brain can go, but you've pulled it off masterfully. Thanks for listing the sources of all the sounds/instruments. This is GRRRRRRRRRRREAT!

SmokeyVW said 169 days ago
.
my earlier reply to DWL might explain it a little.

some of the material just happened to dovetail nicely, so i took advantage of these accidents. i was really pleased with the church choir and the piano part playing simultaneously...

thanks

Skean said 251 days ago
You are..hahaha
You are amassing my friend WHAT a HECK you put one after one song up and all is so cOOL done... You are the winner at this woodstock party... Cheers

i went a little crazy with this festival - the music was flowing fast and furiously.

thank you

oooooommmmmm
i can smell the incense clear over here on the west coast. Now we have to pray for the tibetians survival. what ever happened to peace, love & understanding?

SmokeyVW said 169 days ago
.
peace, love & understanding have always been around, and they continue to this very day.

i believe the trouble is that there is also war, hate & confusion mixed in simultaneously. that continues to this day as well.

after all, the Vietnam war and the draft was going on during Woodstock...

thank you

drakonis said 250 days ago
nicely nicely done
love the way the piano threads all the love bead WAVs together... Super sitar/tabla work and pretty music overall. Great way to span the world.

Funny, I was thinking of Macjams and all these people around the world with a similar thought, all due to Feter's prompting, and it made me feel better about the world... or at least us Macjammers :)

Drakonis

Eduard - you grokked this in fullness!

what else is there to say?

no one has yet mentioned the full meaning of the title however...

thank you

Well, Smokey, this is so complex, you have to play it several times. And I find I focus on the music more if I close my eyes or go to a blank page on a tab. It is actually lovely to listen to because it is cohesive and has such bright sounds. I appreciate your time and your talent. Thank you.
