Description I just got myself an electronic drumset (discussed here: http://www.macjams.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=3;showtopic=107725) and Logic Express 8, after having used GarageBand. This is the first song I've recorded. I did around 8 versions of the song and I'm still not entirely satisfied with it. Finding it hard to play drums along with myself and have it sound natural. But I'm my worst critic and need to declare the thing finally done and move on. Let me know what you think.
Lyrics come on inside
sit by the fire
it’s on tv
and we can make believe
we’re watching news.

let’s take a ride
on our hard drive
we’ll cure the virus
spreading like the measles
of our youth

don’t we both just paint a picture
of people don’t want to be known
two people will make one except if
that person doesn’t reach out to
the only one they know

come on we’ll
reap what we scythe
and sleep through the night
at home
come on we’ll
seem like we’re right
and be who we want
to know

come on let’s fight
about our life
we’ll reach a truce
when we realize the world
is not alone

it’s a delight
to be alive
in time we’ll find that we
can be on top of
what we love

Come on
I am really liking your style. The song is constructed and performed really well. The main vox track sounds like it is panned left. It could just be my headphones though. I like the layers in the chorus. Also the guitar that comes in around 3 minutes is nice! Great stuff!

I explained
the left/right thing below. Doing a Beatles thing splitting up the speakers, and sometimes even the Beatles are hard to listen to on headphones. It sounds less extreme played through speakers. Thanks for the comments.

hello
I think you did a fine job. I like your verse chorus thing too. Everything is there. Nice choice with your drum sounds too.

I was...
being way too hard on myself. After I posted this I started working on the song again, trying to tweak it. Really insanely minor stuff I was trying to fix. I've gotten used to this version though. Gotta let go.

Boss harmony
Psychedelic Furs meet the Beach Boys (minus the bass) - groovy. Very pleasant piano also. Be lucky.

Hey There
When I got the email alert that you'd posted a song I thought, "Am I high, or has it been a really long time since Ash Tree has posted a song." I wasn't high, but hearing this, I remember why I liked your music so much.

First, what a really cool ending. The whole thing really has a great head-bobbing energy to it and I love the obtuse lyrics. I love the purity of the piano tone juxtaposed with the dirtier guitar, as well. The final verse is my favorite. It's true. We can't be on top of what we love. Well, unless he/she cooperates and/or what we love isn't sharp and pointy.

Thanks
for remembering. It's been a long while since I got something done. Took me very long time to figure out this drumset and Logic 8 and some other life-like things got in the way. Now that I've figured out a system I'm hoping to get a lot of recording done in 08.

I listened to this...
...in the morning, just before work, and I didn't have the firing brain cells to even leave a comment...

I like (as I tend to do) the intertwiningness of this track... the twining vocal lines, the guitar lines, and the way the drums sound like they've got an intelligent drummer playing them, accenting and knowing when not to play...

I also like the way the chord progression is catchy but doesn't land quite where I expect it to...

I think you did a great job turning out simple lyrics that don't sound dumb or simplistic...

All this on a MacBook... Wow... Good to hear from you again...

Now
I know why I posted this when I wasn't 100% sold that it was done. Thanks a lot for the comments, really grateful for the feedback.

great song
i love everything about this. everything. i think that the drums sound great, i like the piano when it comes in. only weird thing for me is that the vocal does seem to come out of the left speaker. did you have it set to stereo instead of mono? excellent work.

Ash Tree said 293 days ago
Thanks
I really like your stuff too. About the vocals on the right, I tend to split everything up to give it some more space. Vocals on the left, second guitar and piano on the right. Too much? I mixed down on speakers rather than in headphones b/c headphones are pretty dishonest about how it actually sounds.

michael2 said 293 days ago
you know
it's all about what you prefer ultimately. i like putting vox down the middle, backups panned a little, and different instruments panned farther. i try to think what it would sound like if i were standing in front of a band onstage. i get what you're going for though. like i said, really great.

Living my dream...
Always wanted to do my own drums... still hope to one day. Of course, I also wish I could write such cool songs as this. Great singing...excellent music and a real treat to listen to.

Very glad I took EJH and LeDeb's suggestion to take the time to hear this.

cool song
There's a lot of interesting bits going in and out of this track. I hear where you're coming from on panning the vocals and how the Beatles did it. If you've ever had car stereo speakers go out on you while listening to the Beatles you get that little surprise.

The piano was my favorite. The perfect littly melody to accent the guitars.

You have powerful fans...
If Ed and Lisa (EJH and LeDebutant, respectively) love your song, then I owe it to myself to listen. And I'm so glad I did! This is going on my very selective MacJams Playlist, RIGHT NOW! I so dig this song. Thanks so much for sharing!

And Lisa is right, the ending is spot on!

Hypnotic
Man, this is the first Ash Tree I've ever heard and I am totally impressed by your songwriting, your voice, your playing, and the mix. I listened rather loudly through the speakers so the vocals panned to the left weren't an issue for me.

What a perfect and beautiful song.

I have to see what else my so called friends have kept secret from me!

Your new fan in Valrico,

Bob

I like
reminds me of the pixies. Like the guitar sound. Very clean sounding too.

Ash Tree said 266 days ago
Thanks
I prefer that comparison to Pearl Jam, which I've gotten a couple of times for this song. I suppose the vocal line sounds something like "Daughter."
