Description Many thanks to David Thomas (PerceptualVortex) for the huge drums. I had recently come across some old (circa 1987) cassettes of jam sessions. They were done on a 4 track, and I was able to isolate the guitar on one. Not sure if I'm the only one who enjoys this, but I love to recycle ancient audio. I was fortunate in recreating a new sound bed, but the drums totally stumped me. Thank you PV :-)

Timeless
This sounds great for something that was salvaged from 1987 or any other time. The drums are great and even something a little different sounding from KTB.

Karmatoburn said 298 days ago

Z, it was a challenge gettin the guitar to sync. I especially like that you think its a lil different. Thx for listening

love that synth organ!
And PV constructs the perfect drummers groove! It's indeed a bit different a little like fusion John Scofield and I like it! I especially like the chord chops the guitar does at around the 3 minute mark, as they are so dirty and the last solo seems to be built on that structure. The outro is probably my favorite part. Cool!

Jim, thats my favorite part. Good seeing you the other night. Hears to more of that

Wow KTB
This is like digging up an old treasure, and what a great job of polishing it up. I like finding some of my old stuff, but usually after listening I wish I hadn't. The guitar on this is really good. I love the B3 and just an incredible job by PV with the drums.

Great find thanks

Karmatoburn said 298 days ago
me luv B3
I think theres a song title in there somewhere. Appreciate the kind words

Great jam. PV's mixing and drums are sharp. Rich's guitar soars over the the combo as it should. And I heard some rocking keys in there too, nice job KTB. Cool Stuff.

Thanks
Bill

excellent salvage job... timeless. Love the keys, as always, the guitar sounds just fine (after you did your timing magic)... and Dave's drums are always so alive and tickle my ears. Great stuff!

I agree with you re: Rich. He's a local too :-)

What a very cool over all sound. The sounds blend together real nice. The bed and soloing just sparkle.
Great playing & mixing.
Sweet.

I'm in!
I had to work on the 7th.

Ejh said 298 days ago
Of course there's a lot to enjoy here...
...the very sustain-y guitar lead is great, the comping bed from ktb is always the tasteful and deceptively essential bit...

And I want to say that I continue to be amazed at David's ability to come in AFTER a track's begun and think like a drummer and come up with stuff that sounds like he was playing along the first time it was played/recorded...

Neat meld of the new and old, guys...

Ed

Karmatoburn said 298 days ago
ditto
that re: David's ability to create monster percussion tracks. In this case much after the fact. Maybe we can get him to show us how he does it. That and juggling :-)

Vic Holman said 298 days ago
totally
totally rocks.
fantastic how you were to create a whole bed just from a guitar solo.

and Dave's drums on the mark and real. i think all that juggling has kept him in form.

Karmatoburn said 297 days ago
Guitar track
Vic, when I play just that guitar track I can hear the old drum machine we jammed to. Thank God for that. 'preciate you stoppin by

lupiroz said 298 days ago
Great result,
if you didn't tell about the old stuff salvage I don't think I could understand that! Rock on!!!!

Karmatoburn said 297 days ago
hey
sending you mirage funk with some noodling. That track is great. Thx for letting me jam to it.

Mcboy said 298 days ago
first off
best drumming i've heard from dave...hands down....that synthorgan is very soulful...and the lead guitar playing is tasty......my only compositional critique to make this better is to chop the guitar lead into sections and create some breaks/transitions for the band.....so u don't have one long guitar solo....i like the music ..it cooks......and we are due for another collab.....bassist drewkopr is working on a track that will need some keys ......and percussion by dave if he is interested...should be kool.....cya

Karmatoburn said 297 days ago
breaks
absolutely. One of the things I wanted to do was surprise my guitar buddy, Rich. with a blast from the past. Thx McBoy

Fun Jam
Drums after the fact must be hard as timeing gets altered especially when it comes from a 4track originally
Good job guys thanks for posting it

Mark, thats the way it developed via a jam. Its still more a jam than a real song.
Someday I'll think of a melody :-)

Very cool John... lOvEd the bass and the keys are outstanding.. and who's that guy on guitar? he's really good! David, those drums are outstanding as usual. great collab... loved this from start to finish.

This turned out great, man! I love the guitar and organ in here, and the new bass really holds it all together. It was fun putting together the drum track, thanks for getting me involved with this!

Karmatoburn said 297 days ago

David, that was like the staples 'easy' button. For me at least :-) Many thanks for pounding vibe.

dajama said 297 days ago
Great groove
and an absolutely killer bass sound (and playing) - it just throbs out of the speakers. Nice guitar work too, and those drums are indeed big and very effective. This is very nicely done. Kudos. Peace.

David, coming from you I take that as high praise indeed. Thx for the positive review

blast from the past!
This is a real gem you unearthed, KTB, and thank God for digital restoration you really cleaned it up clear and crisp! PV added a layer of sheen with his awesome percussions. Must be really satisfying to sit back after all was done and enjoy and re-live this track from an era in your life all over again.

Karmatoburn said 296 days ago
golden oldies
Leon, it was a real blast doin this. The original guitar track only had a hint of the old drum program, but once I added the other parts and Dave's crushin drums it all seemed to gel. Thx for commenting

Wowsa
This sounds wonderful and you did a great job of reverse engineering a track to go with the guitar; it sounds completely organic and completely groovy. David's drums sound wonderful and it's cool to hear him "drumming" in a slightly different style than we usually hear from him. Thanks for getting his voice back here on the site, too. I've been wondering when he would post something. He hasn't since last November and I was starting to wonder if he'd been sitting around playing Scrabble or something...

Karmatoburn said 295 days ago
somehow
when I think of David I can't imagine "downtime" unless it has to do with describing his formidable percussive talents. Lisa, I really appreciate you listening and taking the time to comment.

This is another fine example of an excellent collaboration! It sounds like it was all recorded in the present time and not pieced together from several decades. Great job people!

Scott Carmichael said 291 days ago
I've said it before
But you'd be my keyboard man of choice... and I'd have your ears all over every production... lots of testoserone here... testicular fortitude, is the refined way to say it has "balls"...

great stuff John... very Jon Hammer with Jeff Beck

Karmatoburn said 291 days ago
testicular fortitude
Theres a band name in there I just know it :-) Scott, always great to have you stop by and offer encouragement. This is more of a jam per se, but it definitely represents the type of stuff we used to play for hours on end when we got a chance to jam!

gail60 said 287 days ago
yummy... nice
I loved this song. It really sounds great. The drums are perfect and I am really impressed that you were able to recycle this from years back. You are very talented and very good!!!

Lennon714 said 287 days ago
very impressive
I'm first amazed you captured that much quality on a 4-track back in '87. Then the work the other guys put down on this. I can't play in time well enough to save my life, let alone have a drummer come in and blow it away like that. Great job to everyone involved. This track is great!

rsorensen said 285 days ago
nice
great groove here, and great guitar work. glad you dug it up and got it synced!

jiguma said 285 days ago
I'm always a sucker for this style of keys
Top addition in David's drumming - guitars, bass and keys all work really well. Some lovely bass parts in there.
Cheers,

Yeah, PV definitely ROCKS on those virtual drums. Great sense and sensibility he brings to every project he tackles.

Keys, mix and arrangement are awesome, K.

Sure glad you rescued this one. Thanks for sharing!

other than I like it. Real dirty emotion in the guitar and the drums have the WHABAM! Cool
