Description I’ve been married a long time, now, and we’ve been through many stages along the way (we’re currently in the newly-empty-nested stage). Staying married has required some serious growth (mostly on my part - I had a long way to come). Staying married has also brought a huge bonus: my life with Marion has opened important doors in me, and I have become more and more able to see the love in what she does with her days. And when that love is directed at me, well, it moves my mountains. One particular time when that happened in the form of some small, thoughtful gesture, I went out into my studio and wrote this in an attempt to express how it made me feel. I hope I captured at least some of it, knowing I didn’t get it all…

beautiful...
This is just a gorgeous love song and I really enjoyed it. I know your wife must be so proud and honored that you wrote this for her. I have been married almost 28 years and this touched my heart. If ony my husband could play an instrument! :) I appreciate that you took the time to share your feelings with all of us. Here's wishing you more happiness in the years to come. Great job!

futzpucker said 268 days ago
Nice to hear from you
Thank you for the listen, Gail. You message is very sweet. I think Marion does appreciate this song. She's heard hundreds of songs being written by me over the years, so her enjoyment of this was very meaningful to me.

I'm sure your husband shows you his love for you in many ways other than with plugins... This happens to be the only skill I have...

magnatone said 268 days ago
For Marion
this is deeply beautiful. The piano dynamics sound perfect to my ear - soulful, thoughtful, emotive - it's the perfect love song. thanks!

futzpucker said 268 days ago
Nice of you
If your wonderful ear approves of the piano dynamics, that's a great thing. I'm glad you were able to feel this song, Karen. Thanks so much.

What a lovely gesture back...
one of many, I am sure. There is nothing more satisfying than spending time to make something special for that person who has been with you so long, helping make life worthwhile. Yes, this comes through in the music very nicely. Great photo, keeping each other warm with smiles. Really well-crafted music, Patrick, sweet, strong, flows beautifully through to the end. My only nit is the very second note the cello plays seems to be a sudden jump from the first, and seems unnatural, and since that was the opening of the cello, it was noticeable to me, perhaps a softer attack on the first two notes, or more legato, to soften the intro? After that, the cello just melts in your mouth. and the whole piece is delicious.
ttfn,
Drakonis

Good ear, Eduard
This is a very moving comment, one that Marion appreciated as much as I did. I'm so glad that you heard a bit of the depth of my feelings for her in this song. I could only have written it the night it came out - it just flowed. Any other time would have involved effort, which wouldn't get the results...

Thank you for your detailed listen, Eduard. I do appreciate that.

At last!
It seems like a long while between drinks Patrick - first post since 06! Have you been saving this one up? ;)

Seriously, this is a lovely tune and the mix is just perfect. Lots of people are using strings and things as backing, but very few manage to make them sound like a part of a cohesive arrangement rather than just an add-on - an "I know, I'll add some strings and maybe a french horn" kind of thing. This sounds like the complimentary parts were conceived as one. Beautiful playing - lots of warm feelings (tinged with a little of a stronger, more delicate emotion - sounds like love coming through the keys).

Let's not wait so long for the next one!

Cheers to you and Marion!
Neil

futzpucker said 268 days ago
Great to hear from you
It certainly has been a while since I posted. I've got other songs I have finished in the interim, and I will post them subsequently. Very nice of you to suggest I not wait again.

I do tend to layer my arrangements pretty thickly, and it was enjoyable to have so few instruments here. It presents a challenge, and it goes along with something I mentioned in a comment about Wonderland... there's a certain trust that develops that allows for more honesty in the music, which I noticed in your song. I would like to develop more of that, and I hope this is a step in that direction.

I'm very glad to know that the emotion I tried to convey in the song reached you. That means a great deal to me. Thank you, Neil.

MarkHolbrook said 268 days ago

Nice to meet you
Hello, Mark. It's very kind of you to stop by for a listen and leave a comment, especially given that you we don't know each other yet. Or, didn't. Thank you.

kristyjo said 268 days ago
Really lovely -
I especially like the cello part, that runs through providing a solid foundation. I also liked that you shared the background of this song. Sometimes, a person can take their partner for granted in a long term relationship, so it's nice to hear the thought, care and love that went into this song.
The production is top notch, too. Altogether, a well-crafted song.

futzpucker said 268 days ago
Love hearing from the teacher
I really like the sound of this cello, Kristine, and it's a pleasure to play, even on a keyboard. The nuances of slide, vibrato, and level are very enjoyable to control as the part is being played. I'm very pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you for your comment.

Patrick...
This is an absolutely beautiful love song... and I'm a sucker for a great love song! Since seeing you talk about this last week in chat I have been anxiously waiting for this to surface.

Of all the songs you have written in your lifetime it would be difficult to image a more touching and poignant testament of your ever evolving love. I also liked your comment about how much you had to grow... Anne is always telling people that I'm a work in progress.... aren't we all?

Here's to you and Marion! Cheers!

futzpucker said 268 days ago
With deep appreciation...
I'm very touched by what you wrote here, Adam, and very grateful. You understand that having heard a song as many times as one does during its composing, sometimes it's easy to lose track of whether the finished product has in it what was intended at the outset. This fact makes your comment very meaningful to me. Thank you so much.

Godchaser said 268 days ago
Beautiful Blend
One cannot help but hear and feel the depth of gratitude you express for your wife in this piece. Some call it love I tend to lend towards old fashion gratitude, probably both.Nonetheless this is very pleasing to the ear as well as heart and soul.Moved and appreciative that you've shared your sentiment with us.

Blessings,

Pleasure to meet you
It's always a pleasant surprise to get a listen and a comment from someone I haven't met yet.

I find your comment about gratitude highly insightful. I think there is even a touch of apology in the song, which has to do with me not always being the best I can be for my wife - she certainly deserves my best, but doesn't always get it.

I am pleased this song was enjoyable to you, and that you took the time to let me know. Much appreciated, Daniel. Blessings to you as well.

Andreas, thank you so much for listening and leaving a comment. You have been such an asset to this site. I hope you continue to bring your music here, even though I know this was intended as a temporary home for you. Your talent is enormous, and your music is just plain magic.

Thank you, Andreas.

What a beautiful melody!
I know you may have been tempted to make a bigger production, but I'm glad you picked just the right instruments, and kept the intimacy of this wonderful piece of music. Patrick, I will always remember our little conversation that night about music for the ones we love. I hope I haven't been pushy about it.
You know, in everyday life I think some of us creative people find it hard to express
our true feelings. It is those times when we are sitting alone in our little musical environment that we are able to say what we really feel, and express our deepest love
through our music. You made your feelings very clear in this very moving piece.
I won't go into all the details of how great the cello and french horn are plus how sonically good everything sounds. I will just say, everything about this is wonderful.
I will also say it's been an honor to meet you and and hear your music here at MJ's.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish Marion and you the very best.
paul

I'm very glad you joined this community
I barely have words to thank you for your kindness, Paul. It was your inspiration that got me to post this song. Everyone who writes music enjoys praise from musicians at your level, and I am no exception.

As amazed as I am by your level of musicianship, I am even more taken by your open, trusting, and friendly nature. Many here have noticed this about you, and these characteristics are very evident in this comment you left. I am touched by what you wrote, and I am blessed that you have become a friend. Thank you for all this.

As Intimate As Love Itself
A beautiful interpretation of those powerful feelings we have for another person. Elegant in its simplicity, it conveys the quiet ecstasy that loving and being loved engenders.

Lucky you... and lucky Marion.

Yet another beautiful, soulful piece, Patrick. ;)

Lessons learned.
Thank-you Patrick for taking the time to listen to my songs, the kind words, and most of all the advise.

I joined Macjams to force my self to become a better guitar player and to try and evolve. I'm learning that there is so much more when it comes to music...not just how well you pluck the strings.

"For Marion" is a perfect example of painting a picture or telling a story without words. You did an amazing job with this piece. It has both moved me and motivated me.

Thanks again,
Trevor

Very beautiful piece of music
and I have to say beautifully arranged and produced. The use of the cello works particularly well for me, adding depth and sweetness. Lovely melody, and a great sentiment as expressed in your introduction. This is a great piece of music, celebrating, from the sounds of it, a great love. Nicely done. Peace.

This is outstanding, Patrick...
Beautifully composed, perfectly played, with deep emotion that is never schmaltzy... The phrasing in the piano in particular is just right, and the cello is complementary without ever sounding like decoration...

And, being a guy who also loves his wife, I thank you for this one. I think you got it right.

oh gosh, this is just beautiful - full of colors from the heart from the very first measure. it's so poignant - there's an emotional flavor of appreciation for what could be lost and a joy in knowing it never can be. the cello works wonderfully with the fine fine piano. this is a lovely, classy expression of love. kudos to your fine creation!

Ah... Anne, the way you described the "emotional flavor" makes me think, right or wrong, that you felt much of what I felt when I wrote this. That is deeply touching. Scott Carmichael said 264 days ago
Patrick this is superb
the warmth and heart in this make it such a fine track... I really love your patience, how you wait and draw the emotion from each phrase before you move on... you have very few peers here... you're on another level altogether... the melody/meter is remenicenct of all the things I love about the classic celtic calls from the deep..

is Marion thrilled... ?? Lois sometimes asks me why never a song for her... usually when I write a song... it doesn't mater if I fail... I can just throw it away... but if I write that song, it completely maters.... I'm just afraid to let that one be average...

I would want it to be like this!

futzpucker said 264 days ago
Then there's *your* music...
Brother Scott, if the assignment were to write an average song, you would fail. I do believe you are incapable of average. Your music goes right to my heart every time. I don't believe you understand how great a songwriter/player/arranger/singer you are. You are very, very gifted, Scott. This only makes your kind words about my song that much more meaningful to me. Thank you very much.

For Marion
We have recently lost a wonderful poet and philosopher named John O'Donohue from Ireland. If his voice was music, it would be the notes of this beautiful piece of music. You unearthed a treasure. Thank you for making it available, not only to your family, but to all of us. I will listen to this for the rest of my life. You are truly gifted.

futzpucker said 253 days ago
Hello, irrev
As it turns out, I am quite familiar with John O'Donohue. His recorded lectures are music of their own... Such a wonderful way of speaking - his charming accent, his soothing pace, and such moving content as well. This, then, is wonderful comment to read. It pleases me greatly that the song brings the speaking of this great man to mind.

And, welcome to MacJams. I hope you find many more pieces of music here that resonate with you.

Doug, I'm so glad you enjoyed this song. You're right - I have been deeply touched by Marion, as all (most?) married people are touched every now and then by the emotional bond that grows stronger over the years. What a blessing to have had a bit of free time when I was in the state of mind inspired by her so I could get this recorded. And it's a blessing that you found this and commented. Thank you, Doug.
