Description Last year I recorded a one take version of this idea (called Old Jam). Here is an Older version with the piano broken into four takes: The first is solo with no time fixing. The second is very short and counts as the official "theme". The third and fourth are pretty long with some time fixing. I struggled with the percussion and have held this back because of that, but I tuned down the volumes of the percussion so its just there to keep the beat going, hopefully without distracting from the improvising.

The picture is of this year's robot at our scrimmage. The kids really worked hard this year! BTW isn't the ball really big? The robot is 5 feet tall.

Its a mix to me between the best of Elp and some genesis then add in a mystery show with a cop theme. Loved it excellent!

Love those 70's keyboard players! Thanks for the cool comment.

Moviz said 273 days ago
Has an
Oriental feel to this sort of 'Chinatown-ish' Jazz groove... the electric piano always has a nice comfortable feel/sound for me and this was great to listen to, cheers M

peacepiano said 272 days ago
Moviz
Lots of walking 4ths and 5ths in there creating that sound. Glad you enjoyed it.

Cool...
Bill, I am thoroughly enjoying your interesting counterpoint against that rhythmic bass. The "fuzz stop" is so pleasant to my ears and you use it effectively when you bring it in. Just a loping little number that pops along with all this mellow resonance. Must enjoyable. You move into unexpected places, too, and that keeps your comp interesting. So nice to hear this.
Peace.
Paul

peacepiano said 272 days ago
Paul
Always look forward to your comments. Getting resonance from a GarageBand setup is not always easy, but that is what pianos can do thats special. I'm glad the playing stayed interesting throughout, as this is a bit longer than I usually allow.

Peaceful.... It has a very good sound... I like the way you play on this one.... Great relaxing, while listening... Thanks for sharing this..

Glad you enjoyed the performance, and got a little escape from the tensions of the day.

i imagine a robot dancing in the ring....
like a boxer warming up for his fight.....floating like a butterfly and then stinging like a bee....nice rhoads sound......that blues scale sure gets a workout......check out some of hiromi piano/synth work on itunes...u might like...".return of the kung fu champion"...also...."time flies."..and....."time control"....etc

peacepiano said 272 days ago
Mcboy
Thanks for the suggestion. I had not heard of her, but she can really play some interesting progressions. I'll be listening to some later :)

this is awesome. love the rhodes and synths mixed together. i love your stuff, you play really well, but everything you do is so evocative (and not merely a showcase for your chops). really nice piece. hey what did you use for the rhodes sound? i have a great rhodes, but am not about to drag it upstairs to record with? excellent.

peacepiano said 272 days ago
Micheal
I get the rhodes sound by playing my clavinova through garageband's electric piano and adding overdrive. You need to adjust the brightness and source volume as well as the overdrive to get the sound you want. Probably varies with the touch of your keyboard. I haven't used an actual Rhodes before, but they are put together in a way similar to the Clavinova with fully mechanical key action, that might be important.

michael2 said 272 days ago
peacepiano
here's one i did with my Rhodes Mark V:
http://www.macjams.com/song/30741

i used to have a clavinova and the action is so much easier than the rhodes (i;m surprised i don't have carpal tunnel syndrome after gigging with the thing for awhile). and you're right, distortion is key.

jiguma said 272 days ago
a bit like ..
.. watching a building go up - the way you add the various layers of feel to this is really intersting to hear. Like the way you move through various levels with the keys. Cool sounds, cool musical theme.

Sounds like you took this apart and put it back together again:) Good to hear this sounds good to you. Thanks.

a cool jam you got here. lots of nice keys. do i hear a wurlitzer electric piano in there? & i love the portamento synth!

thanks

that picture is eye-catching to say the least

Smokey
That is our lucky 13th robot. We panted the frame black :)

No intentional whirly, but it is a sort of old school electric piano sound that I was after. Glad you like the synth!

This is fun!
nice funky vibe... and that sound is killer! one section had a wicked late 70's Steve Miller Band feel... not exactly a bad thing.

I really enjoyed listening to this... thanks!

AC Clarke
Sounding like Steve Miller is definitely not a bad thing!! Thanks for listening.

Pete_NB said 270 days ago
Inventive.
I like your sense of melody in this, and the bass line is almost, mischevious. It plays well with where the melody takes the listener.

Great stuff!

Being mischievous when improvising sounds like high praise to me :) Playing like this is supposed to be fun. Thanks for the comment.

Karmatoburn said 270 days ago
nice
dig the improv feel. like how the percussion just sneaks up on you. all the sounds were sweet retro. luv that fat analog. the rhodes sounded like the real deal.

peacepiano said 269 days ago
KTB
Good to hear the percussion is not taking over, that was a problem on the original mixes. I played the drums pretty loud when I was playing.

davisamerica said 269 days ago

genesis .... cop show theme ... rhodes cool ... which is just my feeble way of trying to say i loved this ... i just love your overall talent on the keys man ... very cool indeed!

Always enjoy your comments :) Soundtrack...I can see that. Thanks

spitlogic said 269 days ago
Nice track
You definately need some guitar in this. I like the sequence of notes alot.

peacepiano said 269 days ago
Spitlogic
Hmmmm.... Round it out and make is a complete composition, not just a piano solo. Good suggestion. Always appreciate your comments.

Youra said 268 days ago
Great impro
and great sound too. I dig this seemingly effortless ballad. Well done, peacepiano !

peacepiano said 267 days ago
Youra
Seemingly indeed. I will not provide a full accounting of the mixing time and the time improving the timing of some of the rougher parts, but its good that after that it still has the spontaneity that only comes from an improv.

Scott Carmichael said 267 days ago
Great Chops Bill
there are some nice warm analog sounding synths in there too... sounds like a late night... turn the lights down... close your eyes... and follow it where it will lead... exploration at it's finest...

our wives discussed the benefits of robot making when it comes to paying for college... I'm going to buy a kit right now!!!!

peacepiano said 267 days ago
Scott
Robots are paying off for my youngest :) On the other hand, there is a young lady in my conceptual Physics class who is paying for college with her singing, although what she has gone through to get there makes engineering look like a cake walk.

It was good meeting you at the MJ gathering.

Bill, the percussion is ideal in this. It holds all the voices in this track together and never gets in the way. Besides, the rest of the movement in this track is really great. You played really well in this whole song, and I can always pick your piano out of a tune now. The tone of your keys is a signature now. I like this track a lot, and I agree with Jiguma, it reminds me of a time-lapse construction project.

Glad you like the tune. After spending hours mixing this I played it for my wife and she curled up her nose and said all she could hear were tambourine loops. Well, I was tired, so I turned down the percussion levels and posted the song without letting her hear it again, guess I adjusted them the right amount :)

8piscean8 said 260 days ago
Mesmerizing
This tune is mesmerizing! I can't quite put my finger on it but it feels very 70's or something. All I know is it transports me back in time and I feel younger. I can picture this song playing on TV where they have a time lapse of car taillights streaking by. I could also hear this in one of the Ocean's 11,12, or 13 movies (they have great soundtracks). Great work!

peacepiano said 259 days ago

I like the images you bring to mind. The jazz-rock fusion of the 70's never seems to let me go, not really a bad thing...

Nice contrast in synth tones
An easygoing syncopated chain of melodies with fun flourishes and noodling that keeps interest building to hear what's coming around the next sonic corner. Rhythm accompaniment is understated and lets the melody/counter come through.

Tres cool Bill,

Merci,
Doug
