Keywords thanks Lisa (1)
Description I just got this granular synthesis plug in (KT - it's free), and i was playing with it, so I decided to do a remix of LeDebutantes first track "After All." Originally it was just for fun, but then I asked for her blessings and the Gb file. I left most of what she did originally as it was pretty sparse and then i ran a piano sound through the granular synthesizer for all of the noises (except for a track of FM synth for bell like sounds).

I think it's a really pretty song, and Lisa is such a pleasure to do stuff with; so this was all fun for me. One question: is the bass too loud?

heres the original: http://www.macjams.com/song/10741
Hardware intel mini mac
Software: GB 4, free remedy synth, KT granular synth, itunes for the endless bounces

After all - granular remix
Lisa's voice is shining and so does your track. Most beautiful piece of music, congrats, bravi!!

michael2 said 274 days ago
thanks dirigent
lisa's voice is so sweet on this song, that you could put it over pretty much anything and it would sound great. for a minute i almost did a mix of just her voice and the electronic sounds. thanks so much for listening.

Strawberry fields!
Definite SF instrumentation vibes here... I like the weird squeaks that are added (though I love the original too.) There is definitely something *wonky* with the EQ, though, there's a strong midrange peak that causes a bit of boominess, not that the bass is too strong, I think its just that there's a low-ish midrange area that needs softening...
Ah, I love this song...

Drakonis

michael2 said 274 days ago
wonkiness
good word. i need to work a little at being able to actually get something from the EQ. i tried checking out the visual EQ and there wasn't a lot of bottom end, so i was afraid to touch anything EQ wise. Lisa used a pinhole mic on this so there were some weird things vocally that weren't really apparent until i would try a certain reverb or something.

i did have a lot of fun composing the sound bits though, and just getting to know the song better. thanks so much Drak.

Nick_Flash said 274 days ago
Nice arrangement
The synths are great and the whole thing just flows together perfect. Very soft and beautiful. Nice work.

michael2 said 274 days ago
thanks Nick
the song was already really great, and so I had to just keep reminding myself not to go completely over the top with noise. lisa is a tremendous talent, i think she has a really sweet charm filled voice. it would have been hard to mess this up too bad.

thanks for listening.

echoroom said 274 days ago
oooh
i'd forgotten how good this track is. The soundbed really works with Lisa voice. I do agree the bass is maybe a tad loud, tho' that sounds like a choice rather than a mistake.

Lisa in wonderland - great stuff guys.

michael2 said 274 days ago
thanks Steve
lisa in wonderland; love that. i really think her voice sounds full of naive wonder on this song, so i wanted to put some strange disorienting sounds behind her. i actually turned the bass down, but the EQ section always confuses me when mixing. maybe i need to focus on that for awhile. thanks so much for listening.

Feter said 274 days ago
After All Granular
this is just awesome my friend .LeDebunte singing
surtely amazing but the arrangment just set this
beauty into a complete picutre of art .. wonderfull
KUDOS!

michael2 said 274 days ago
thanks Feter
you are too kind (ALWAYS). Lisa's voice is the glue that holds this collage together, but i hope that the sprinkling of glitter that i threw on it added something too. thanks for listening.

odd
I wonder why it got such a muffled sound. Maybe something to do to endless iTunes bounces. I'm obviously really familiar with this song, having done my own version recorded with banjo, and also re-recorded it with ledeb with all new music. I like the KT Granular synth plug... I've used it a lot, and it's pretty wacky and sparkley. Something is odd in the guitar loops since they sound so bassy. Nice version though.

michael2 said 274 days ago
hey jim
thanks for listening. yeah i can't figure it out. i did bounce the guitar loop once, but i don't know whats going on. i tried it on my headphones and it sounds fine, in my guitar it was a little bassy, at work it sounded fine. maybe that should be the next plug in someone makes, something that mimics different stereo setups for when you're doing a mix. thanks for listening.

thanks bryn
for the listen and the vote of confidence.

biba_nova said 274 days ago
this is coming from someone
who once stuck their head in the bass bin of the PA system at an Orb gig...the reasons why I felt compelled so to do are the subject of legend...but thats another story

very nice song michael and lisa

gail60 said 274 days ago
great job
This is a very good song. I loved everything about it. I dont think the bass is too loud at all. In fact, No complaints about it at all. Thanks for sharing! Awesome collab!

Vic Holman said 274 days ago
nice...
... to hear a different twist too this. like that synth effect. cool.

regarding bass, didn't seem to loud through my headphones, but i would cut the eq at 76hz. that helps to tighten it up a bit.

said 274 days ago
Nice song
However I thought you at some points over road Lisa's vocal, to bad because what you did was very appropriate just to loud in spots which made me work to hear her lyrics...

rsorensen said 274 days ago
awesome
wonderful sound and great synth work. i want that plugin!
this is worth a bit of a better balanced mix because I agree some of the vox are a little washed out, but it's definitely close to perfection. well done!

jiguma said 274 days ago
Nice version Michael ..
.. although I still prefer the original. Can a bass be too loud? ;)

I agree with Jim in that it sounds like theres a muddy bottom in there, but I don't think the bass is the culprit - just sounds like the guitars. It's a definition problem in that the bass seems to be right through everything.

Bloody fine song though! Maybe worth a remix!?

wonderful track Michael lisa, love that granular sound, easy going beat but sure rawks. have to listen to the original now. and btw, I love your new avatar ^^

Mcboy said 274 days ago
very creative use
of synthesis....it adds a dramatic and floating quality/feeling to the vocals.....bass sounds fine in the mix......really like the sparse ambiance ans pacing......bows!

davisamerica said 273 days ago
right then michael
this is beautiful ... kinda has a garfunkel feel but you and lisa have made a very original and wonderful piece here. i love this guys .... absolutely love this

markoo said 273 days ago
Oh yes
Another great mix Michael. Lisa's got a great voice and this interesting delivery of the song really enhances it. More to come no doubt.

said 273 days ago
i agree with drak
try running two identical tracks of the same bassline, with one track a higher, more bright string or rock tone, and the other a deeper, hip hop, or modern rock bass tone. you can get the best of both worlds that way. if it is a keyboard bassline, do the same with two tracks, but use the eq to take out all of the lower mids and boost the highs in one track, and boost the low end on the other, then use the volume conrtols to feathe rin both tones. you might like the results. really good song, BTW...happy one year anniversary, brother

Beautifully done
This is definitely my favorite tune from Lisa and her original version has a charm that just never was quite achieved in any of the remakes or covers (even though they were all excellent and I loved 'em). You've managed to keep that charm and to enhance using a light touch. It works really, really well with the simple, clean nature of the tune. Great to see it remixed with such a caring touch.

bud said 271 days ago
Great collab -
with you two what could go wrong? I'm cool with the bass - and I really like the snyth stuff. Gotta check out Granular. Excellent job Lisa with a pinhole mic.

you say its free.. I think Pink Floyd would have loved that. But they did it the hard way. Just Kiddin an over all great atmospher you have created here. Great remix and collab . I think its official you are the king of collabs!

Michael
Thank you so much for the beautiful work you did on this. I've told you privately how blown away I am, but I really do think I should say it here, that I'm just amazed at the magic you created with the extra sound and the changes you made in the production. It's hard to fathom that the vocal came from me kneeling on my office chair to get my voice as close as I could to the pinhole mic, all the time clutching the desk so I wouldn't roll backwards (oh, the things we do for art). You made it sound so much better.

It's such a gift that anyone would ever want to revisit any of my songs, but especially a musician as creative and wonderful and easy to work with as you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My favorite part is the little bit of piano you added between the first "after all what is love for" and the second before the strings come in. It's such a nice detail and you added so many. I know this arrangement like the back of my hand because I still haven't written that many songs all by myself, so I don't have that many clogging up my brain, so I hear everything you did and appreciate it so much.

Thank so much to everyone who commented and had such sweet things to say, as well. Michael is such a great gift to our community. Plus he looks great in fishnets.

you're turning me on to so many new pieces of software: GleetchLab, Remedy, what next? Thanks for finding all of these slick noisemakers. Besides, you make neat sounds with them too.
