Description It's been a while since either I or Rebsie posted anything so even though there are a few niggles with this we've decided it's worth posting.

This was a bit of an experiment. First of all I wanted to put a Bacharach/David reference into each verse (dunno why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time). Then I decided I wanted an African Palm Wine style.

I did post this a while back as a "live" solo piece but couldn't turn down the chance of getting Rebsie to sing it. And many thanks to her for singing on this and putting up with my constant changes :-)
Lyrics I want some answers to my questions
Do you know the way to San Jose?
Can you forgive my indiscretions
and if I said I loved you would you stay?

If I called your name across a noisy street
Would you walk on by the other way?
Why are you so busy we can never meet
And if I said I loved you would you stay?

Why does the sun keep on shining
when my heart grows so cold?
They say that every cloud it has a silver lining
And all I feel is old

If I say a little prayer for you
Could I say it softly every day?
I don’t think that's what you want me to do
And if I said I loved you would you stay?

beautiful acoustic performance, yes. Magic voice and enchanting accompaniment :-) Good mix, a lot of feeling in this track. Amazing collab!

Simple is best
This is a simple track - just vocal and acoustic, but what a piece. Very intimate, and nicely recorded, this is a new high for the two of you. i cant say why exactly, but this is really magical - 'worth posting' indeed. Classy and classic - hats of guys, tis is a keeper.

An accolade indeed!
I appreciate the comments. I always liked the song but Rebsie lifted it to somewhere else.

Enjoy it while you can as I guarantee my next song won't be anything like this!

Yeah
I love the sound of this. Great vocal by Rebsie on a simple but very neat song. I really love the feel of the backing with the acoustics. The stop and go bass is a perfect example of.......less is more.

Just great DWL and Rebsie

DWL said 276 days ago
I can do simple
Rebsie thought that "less is more" was the right approach. Now I agree with her :-)

Thanks for listening.

I just don't know what to do with myself, this is such a good song.

Less is more, that's what it's all about.

Congratulations!

Such a...
...nice sound!!! This is a '70s folk-style if ever there was one and you two have captured the feeling perfectly. Very much enjoyed the gentle flavor of this little song. I do, though, wish Rebsie's vocal was up higher. It is getting overpowered by the bass (and I DO love the bass)... just crank her up a bit.
Wonderful song and one I am looking forward to listening to many times. Nice collab.
Peace.
Paul

DWL said 275 days ago
Thanks Paul!
I had to leave out the 60s trumpets :-)

Maybe I should bring the bass down???

Man, this is nice!!
Rebsie & Dick make a great team.

You two would be a hit on the coffeehouse circuit, working in this style.

leave it to you, Dick, to throw in the Burt lyric references.

Excellent tune, you two.

As a caffeine addict

Thanks Vic, nice idea, pity we live a 100 miles apart :-(

Ha!
You're thanking ME for singing this?!

It's a lovely song, your guitars are beautiful, the mix is good and the arrangement perfectly judged. And you make fantastic spinach and feta pie.

You've been a good friend to me in some difficult times and I really appreciate it. So thank YOU.

Regarding your original solo version of this - I still want to know who won the box of soiled tissues.

Lovely Singing Rebsie, and great accompaniment Dick (and Rebsie?). A really classy folk tune done just about to perfection.
No nits, just honest beautiful music.

Rebsie said 275 days ago

FYI Neil ... Dick played all the instrumentation on this one, and had to scrape me up out of the gutter of my self-doubt to get the vocal out of me. Maybe I'll twang an instrument or two on the next one. :)

Nice quiet piece Dick and Rebsie
Well done by both of you. The vocal's a tad quiet for my ears, but then I am going deaf. Rebsie, you voice is so pleasant to listen to and Dick did a really fine job with the guitar track.

A very nice listen you two, thanks for sharing it.

Be well the both of you.

Wow... Rebsie's high!
I mean her voice... this is a new register? It is a rather different sound for her, but it is quite pretty, brings her into the sunshine, puts flowers in her hair. Really sweet guitar work too, and a delightful song, even if it was assembled "Hermit-crab" fashion from bits of lyrics. Very nice experiment!

but I don't know why!

Rebsie did do a very good job on this and I was pleased with the way it all came together.

Brilliant, beautiful and vulnerable. Congratulations Dick you and Rebsie are really bringing about truly wonderful colours of eachothers skills. Rebsie sounds as lovely as Ive ever heard her, the vox treatment you gave her really really worked. Your picking and backing tracks are of course just so yummy.

Bravo!!!!

Rebsie said 272 days ago

Thanks Jack. That's a very nice compliment and much appreciated. I think me and Dick were both in uncharted territory with this one, but that's part of the fun.

Cute cat, btw. What is it about keyboards that attracts cats? One of ours does free jazz improvisations on my beautiful antique piano and the other is terrified of it and runs and hides under the bed.

Rebsie said 272 days ago

We really appreciate you stopping by McBoy, and thanks for a lovely comment.

The whispery vocal thing is a bit of an experimental path at the moment so I'm very glad to hear you like it.

Rebsie said 272 days ago

Thanks Yeman! We've really appreciated the lovely comments you've made on so many of our songs.

Yeah, he's a guitar god all right. He's such a wondrous shredder of electrics and it really is amazing that he can do this sensitive acoustic stuff equally well.

It's good to see your latest song riding the top of the charts - and so well deserved.

This is just about perfect...old niggley me keeps trying to find something wrong with it and I just can't seem to. It doesn't help that this is my idea of ideal music, with gorgeous vocals and delicate picking and and then the added element is a simply wonderful ambient working of the vocals in the chorus that is so subtle that it slays me.

The third time through I did notice that there is a sort of thumpiness in the guitar tracks, like the guitar needs to be cut in the mids a tad and a slight boost the high end a shade to be a bit more sparkley and a little less thumpy, but it's a tiny thing, and even as it is, this is far and away better than most recordings of this nature that get released to great acclaim in the professional realm. Reminds me of the new-psychedelic folk movement that is all the rage now, Devandra Barnhart and the like. but better...

DWL said 271 days ago
Food for thought
First off, thanks for the praise :-)

Secondly - the guitar sound. I really struggle with picking as I am an inveterate nail biter and have no nails on my right hand so the attack on my picking is softened. Whilst this gives a lovely soft sound (which is what I wanted here) it does tends to flatten the response across the frequency range.

I didn't want a bright sound on this but I can see what you mean about the boominess and I'll see what I can do. It's a pity MJ doesn't allow UPDATED versions to be posted without a new thread :-(

Thanks a lot Jim. Much appreciated.

Cheers

Wow!
This is excellent; nice work Dick. Rebsie did her usual intimate, warm vocal which is a perfect fit for your song. The guitar playing is beautiful and the levels seem very friendly to the ear. I like the references in the writing; identified immediately with the sentiment. Is "bully for you" appropriate here? Great stuff.

Cheers,

Joe

Rebsie said 269 days ago

Thank you Joe, glad you enjoyed it. :)

apb said 269 days ago
Lovely ..

.. enjoyed this immensely - excellent performances and mix, very intimate sounding and gentle. Perfect balance .. not too much not too little, spot on.

Really a keeper .. guitar fingerstyle is sweet and Rebsie's vocal is top notch.

I might have tried some steel (oil) drums for a fading outro, as I could easily listen to this for another 1.5mins .. little instrumental break then final chorus perhaps too - I also wondered a little about the overall key .. since Rebsie does drop down very low on some run downs .. and also hops pretty high too... if the top notes could go up a semi-tone (say), the bottom ones might sound less deep on the 'day' trail offs... impressive range never-the-less and if it feels comfortable, pay no heed.

You two do really gel. Kudos to you both on another excellent collab.

Rebsie said 269 days ago
Thanks Alan
It's very perceptive of you to suggest I'd be more comfortable a semitone higher, because my key of choice is B flat and we did this in A. It felt comfortable in A though ... it's a really nice fun song to sing. But I have a piddlingly narrow vocal range so it doesn't take much to push my limits. :)

Your support and encouragement are much appreciated.

davisamerica said 269 days ago

Not a pest at all, Jack. With 40,000 other songs on this site to choose from, I can't think of a much bigger compliment than that you took the trouble to listen again and leave us three comments. :)

Now it's my turn to apologise for being late
Lovely song you two. Singing, lyrics, guitar work and mix come together to make this an iPod favourite. My only nit is that Rebsie's wonderful vocal seems a little low in the mix on my sound system. Not enough to detract from the engaging effect of this song though.

I'm clearly getting too far behind when I'm missing out on gems like this one. Kudos to you both for pro work.

Keep well,
Doug
