Keywords Beethoven (12)jazz (426)solo (79)piano (648)
Description I recorded a version of this on iComp about four years ago. It got lots of plays and downloads. The more I listen to it, however, the more little flaws I hear, which I have always wanted to correct. But maybe the earlier flaws made it popular, I don't know. Anyway, I like this version better.

Piano plug-in is Akoustik Piano thru GB3, Yamaha P-120 controller, 2004 eMac 1.25 ghz, 1gb Ram.

I wonder if...
...Beethoven is "rolling over" in his grave, John. You once again work your wonderful magic with the jazz piano and chording. I never thought I would enjoy Fur Elise again, but you brought new life to it in your inimitable way. Just supurb. (The Akoustik really works well on this number. Very crisp. You seem to be enjoying yourself immensely.)
Peace.
Paul

I love this treatment-
I always listen to your music expecting that humorous/inspired twist, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when it enters. I love those first three jazz chords in this. (and the rest of the song, too.) Great stuff!

Ibstrat said 315 days ago
You
piano players make me mad with your close voiced chords.I wish I could do that on guitar! This is just great.I've heard Fur Elise so many times- I dislike it almost as much as Pachelbel canon. But your version is terrific!

Great to the last

Thanks for sharing this gem!

Each day of this week I listened to my daughter practising this piece :-) Your interpretation here is a very nice variation of the original and a welcome relief, I like it a lot :-)

Very cool interpretation. Awesome playing.

nothing like flaws
to humanize a performance....this is just drop dead gorgeous playing....how do u like the akoustik vs the Ivory???......

Ludwig likes it. Me too.
Very nice, very tasteful, as always. I am pretty sure that Ludwig likes it -- yup, just double-checked; he does!

I was wondering if you might cut loose, stretch out a bit, as you kept it going, but it doesn't do that so much, which of course is perfectly good too! But, just for the record, I'd love to hear a version of this in which something along these lines happened (i.e., start very controlled, 'inside the box,' then progressively stretch out until it gradually becomes more 'raw', or whatever the term might be for when an artist cuts loose).

But be that is it may, this is wonderfully done, and I love it!

guitapick said 315 days ago
Well, Mr. Stebbe...
...this is downright excellent...very, very tasteful...the blend of jazz and classical is just right. And I like the length of the piece, too. Seems true to the original in that way...

Thanks, John...wonderful listen...downloaded...

Terrific as always
Great treatment of a wonderful classic John. Thanks again.

God bless,

Rick

Very Nice...
I really like the alt voicings. Very nice.

I see that you are using Akoustik Piano on the last couple of tracks - did this replace Ivory? I got Akoustik a while back and I have never warmed up to it - it always seems a little too bright and tinny for me. I have started using it again and have found a preset that I like, but overall, I was disappointed with it. How are you finding it?

Thanks for Sharing -
Kayle

Thanks, Kyle
Thanks, Kyle. Yes, I am using Akoustik regularly now, and have not used Ivory in about a year. I saw a review of it in Mix Magazine, and they really liked the Steinway setting, but the other settings were not so good, they said. And they were right, I think. The Steingraber, the Bosendorfer, are not that great. Not even just for variety. But I really do like the Steinway, and I like the fact that the reverb is built-in to the program (unlike Ivory), and that Akoustik has its own built-in equalizer. And Akoustik puts far less of a strain on my computer than Ivory -- Ivory always had stutters and dropouts -- it was rare that I could listen to a playback without some kind of performance issue. But with Akoustic -- that rarely happens. I think Akoustik is a combination of physical modeling and old-fashioned sampling, which may explain why it's less taxing on my computer. The whole thing installs on only 4 DVDs, as opposed to ten for Ivory. I have been very happy with it. I recorded most of my latest CD with Akoustik.

Thanks for stopping by, Kyle.

Whoops
Whoops, sorry, Kayle. I need to clean my glasses.

One more thing
One more thing -- Akoustik does not work right now with Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard on my desktop Mac before I checked whether or not it would work (why would it not work?). So my Macbook is still running Tiger, so for the moment, if I want to use Akoustik, I have to use the Macbook. The people at Native Instruments tell me that a fix is in the works, but no date yet.

kclements said 314 days ago
Akoustik Works Now!
Hi John -

I have found one or two presets that I really like. But there is an update available now that works with Leopard. It took me a little while to find it, but it is there. Version 1.1.3 works with 10.5

John Stebbe said 314 days ago
It Does?
Kayle, that's good news, but I still see this message on the NI web site:

"This page provides information about Native Instruments products and Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard". The content will be updated and expanded over time to address additional questions and reflect further developments. This page has last been updated on January 30th, 2008.

"Native Instruments welcomes the improvements in Mac OS X 10.5, but does currently not recommend upgrading to the new operating system version for professional audio production or live performance until compatibility with existing third-party audio software has been widely confirmed by other manufacturers."

Do you have a link?

Thanks,

John

Fur Elise Jazz
Wow this is sweet. Nice playing and great chord choice for the jazz version. Love the twist on an old classic that keeps me interested in a piece that (at music stores) is way too overplayed. If they played something like this I'd right behind them just soaking it up. I almost feel like it'd sound sweet with some sort of jazz beat behind. *shrug* just me rambling. Great track, thanks for posting!

Again...
I'm wishing I'd taken up piano- I don't know that there is a more beautiful sounding instrument.

John, this is a wonderful rendition of this song... you have managed to freshen it and give it a unique (and tasty) flavor.

Thanks for keeping the flaws- they really add soul to the piece.

Sounds like a fine tribute to Schroeder's favorite composer. I didn't hear the other version, but this one is really smooth. Instant Fave!!!

Thanks

Great!
Great version of Fur Elise, one of the very best old favorite tunes. Loved the changing from the intro into the jazz. Your playing is amazing sir. Hats OFF!

rendition . You have a very nice touch.

Nothing like the Fur Elise....
I used to play as a child. This one is better; just wonderful! I really wished I had taken some Jazz as a kid. Your interpretation would have given Beethoven a pause for taught, and who knows, he probably would have also been the greatest Jazz composer ever (in addition to Bach of course):>

Cracking...
Really good take on the orig , not too jazzy and still enough of the original left to appreciate the variation...like it a lot ...bagged it ...it's in the trophy cabinet.....Jarvo

Hey John!

I've been away from MJ for a while and I have some catching up to do. But your banner came up so I shecked this out.

very cool. Well played!

I am blown away when I see your scores john. Your scores should be much higher. You are truly one of the best musician-composers here on this site. I think it is unfair that your scores are so low and they should be up there with the best.

You are so very talented at that piano!

Really fun jazz, so well done with that happy flavor that is so precious!

Fur Elise
Oh this is brilliant. Wonderful arrangement and performance. I love it! I think Beethoven would have loved it too. You did a great job on this - glad you revived it. I really like how you go back and forth between the original classical sound and the jazzy arrangement. Thanks!

Love your piano playing!
Your jazzy interpretation is really interesting and cool.
