Description The guitar part I wrote years ago .. very early this .. in my teens .. I remembered it just recently and polished it up, experimenting with different sounds. The result sounded a little cinematic perhaps.. and also like an environmentally sound but regrettably psychotic artificially intelligent machine that badly wanted to
feel sunshine - and thus 'Proteus V' was born :o)

Sweet climbing progression
The strings add a nice touch to the acoustics. Nice spread on the mix.

Proteus V
very fine song my friend .indeed its totaly cenimatic
and somehow I m hearing moody blues spheric acoustic
guitar and orchestrations with more of synthetic
sound all around this ..just cool my friend !

that80sboy said 318 days ago
i like this apb!
the raw power alone grabs you....and i love dr who...could have been a music bed on the show no problem!!...nice

magnatone said 318 days ago
I'll take some popcorn!
I like this - I wish it had been longer, that's the best I've got in the way of criticism!

peacepiano said 318 days ago
Progress
This would fit right in the middle of a movie when the actors are driving somewhere reviewing where they've been and what they should do next. The climax is not far behind.

Thanks
Bill

craft said 318 days ago
ya
love the back strings... lovely.. drums and popcorn pops sounds very good... Why don't you make it bigger?

said 318 days ago
very
Rush, 2112. i wonder if this was an early influence on your formative years. too short, tho. you had me all excited for a transititon and your transition was the ending. ah well....

lengold said 318 days ago
Really great
sound Alan. Really does sound cinematic. Very enjoyable listen but left me wanting more - you must expand it last longer.
Well... I say must, but you don't have to if you don't want to, of course.
Cheers
Len

Roxylee said 318 days ago
Alan, this is great
You always bring together everything so well... cinematic, rock, experimental- it all fits. This takes genius, imo. It left me wanting to hear more!!!

davisamerica said 318 days ago
right then
more please alan

estellie said 318 days ago
I like it!
You know, don't get me wrong, I like it at this speed because it's kind of groovy, but I can also imagine it slowed down quite a bit, to a melancholy theme in a movie, when, for example, the machine has its first feeling, hee hee, or the machine must make a moral decision, ah, the movies.

dajama said 317 days ago
Very cool
This is a really nice progression, and the guitar sounds great. Good use of strings and some nice rhythmic backing (I especially the little rimshots...). Very evocative (as I think everyone has mentioned!) and great sound and production. Starts a little abruptly for my taste, but that's just me. Nicely done. Peace.

echoroom said 317 days ago
Kinsa spacey
I get the dr Who stuff, but this really has a mood all of its own... as for the production, I dunno what you do in real life, but you've missed youir vocation - this is awesome!

Like it more ! Interesting. . . relaxing. . REALLY NICE !(!) Tack :)

Great
This sounds great... I'm hearing it now the 2nd time... Good details in this one... And good rhythm.... Thanks for sharing it...

spitlogic said 317 days ago
hmm..
I'm still trying to picture what movie this could be: As far as I can envision I can see a car driving very fast on a mountain (maybe a race or just a getaway). Im not sure, but I think all the elements of this song fit well (even that popping noise). Nice work.

apb said 316 days ago
Thanks everyone !
caroline - sweet and yes, those analog synths always give a touch of BBC Radiophonics workshops work on the "Sea Devils". TV-matic? lol. Rest assured I only squeezed the camel a little :o)
TEXASFEEL - thanks John. Was just a quick experiment...I do like taking time to try finding a good spot in the stereo field for each instrument.
Feter - thanks. I do like mixing very organic with very synthetic from time to time, sometimes it gives a cyborg-ish sound I like.
that80sboy - you'll be more of a Davison era chap?? (80s) but .. you'll no doubt recall some Roger Delgado/Pertwee wacky mellotron synth sounds. Thanks.
magnatone - thanks Karen. It's perfect if someone needs a 1:14 piece for some media. :o) It's supposed to have a bit of penultimate lead .. leave you hanging for the 'action' or startling discovery to unfold before your eyes.
peacepiano - thanks Bill. That's kinda like I was thinking. Hopefully suitable for sci-fi horror film genre.
craft - lol .. I think the popcorn popping was quite a subliminal addition. I may well come back to it and make it bigger... or try it at a slower speed (as Estella suggested).
Allen Dean - actually, I think I can count on one hand the Rush tunes I know/like/influenced me: Limelight, The Trees, Spirit of Radio and Time Stands Still .. and I got to the latter via the Amie Mann connection in fact. Might need a touch more bass guitar to go that way .. and a different time signature... something in 3s ;o) It's good I thought the ending has the effect of wanting more .. perhaps not music .. but film action instead? Thanks bud... next stage for this might be to add some guitars :o)
lengold - lol .. must? MUST?? I think your right .. I'll certainly dabble with this later. Thanks Len.
roxylee - I must admit for this I just let it play itself out ... quite aimlessly around a notion of some organic and synthetic sounds .. it was at the end I tried listening with different ears and decide what I had created so far. Thanks very much, too kind.
davisamerica - ok then .. maybe just a little :o) Thanks Jack.
estellie - I think that is an excellent suggestion .. it's actually a bit fast .. I didn't realise until I had recorded the guitars *doh* .. but I also like/hear what you mean .. it has some theme-ish qualities (I had hoped) and they could be played
slower and build up etc .. I might need to try (for the first time) some tempo adjusting in Logic (don't have GBv4 yet).
dajama thanks Dave .. I'm glad you liked the rimshots .. I kinda thought I'd over-emphasised them a little too much with the Ozone Parametric EQing on the master track.
echoroom - thanks Steve. Oh, in real life I am a MJer, in the virtual world I am a daft berger and in my dreams, I work ;o) I'd love to mix/produce/record fulltime...anything computer music related (short of journalism)..oh, if only it would only pay the mortgage... otherwise I'm stuck as a mild mannered systems engineer.
saymme - thanks Lena. It does have a strangely lulling therapeutic effect .. I thought that was just me .. despite hopefully a hint of fore-boding, sinister, sci-fi and horror.
Lightman- thanks Jakob - I did try to focus on the drums and subtle variations (even within something this short).
spitlogic - thanks Mitchell. I was trying to suggest it might be kinda like music suitable for placement somewhere in a re-make of the 1977 sci-fi horror film "demon seed" .. hmm..perhaps also slightly influenced by "Resident Evil" I've since reflected .. (if you've seen that?) .. certainly some kind of chase .. I was thinking for corridor in complex I guess... lots of interpretations .. quite open applicability...
maybe if I remove the popcorn noise .. lol .. that's a good sound .. but it's perhaps
drifting into the 'too much fun' category.

musichead said 316 days ago
nice
as always..very very nice.
ummm camel crusher.
I love it...but wow...too short

said 316 days ago
Wow
Nice Mix and production.. dont you just love it when you remember something you used to play and then you make it all new.. nothing else like it.. Excellent guitar btw.. I would agree with comments about it being longer

blaky smith said 316 days ago
Yes...
for this music !
Very good sounds Alan, I'm impressed by the clearness and punch, as usual a nice production, very pro and very enjoyable to my ears, thanks...
Marc

ledebutant said 316 days ago
What?
It's OVER? That was short, but I suppose that's a good reaction because it means I wanted it to be longer. You got some very interesting sounds out of your machines and I love the concept for the song. Have you ever tried the CamelSpace demo? You can make some very cool effects with that baby and you don't have to crush any camels or avoid the rspca to do it. ;-)

apb said 315 days ago
Thanks Lisa ..

.. short .. but dispicable err, I mean .. expandable. I'm tempted to experiment with this piece and arrange it differently to convey different things ..why? .. just for fun.

I checked out some of the demo songs at Camelspace and it was good plug-in.. but not worth the $85 IMO ..(sheesh the price of plug-ins these days!).. a few preset sounds did sound very appealing for commercial dance-club tunes .. and some very dr who too. If only I had an endless cash supply :o)

ledebutant said 315 days ago
Demo-time
The demo isn't time-limited and only silences the track every 30 seconds...I'm just saying...

bud said 316 days ago
Cool track - but too short
I was just getting into it when it was over and if I had gotten stuck in the popcorn line I would have missed the whole thing. Great production and arrangement, playing and all that.

Bowman said 315 days ago
Smooth...
and good natured piece which put me in a nice place.
Enjoyed.
Best,
Bowman

jiguma said 314 days ago
Short and sweet!
Love Estella's comment about the machine having it's first feeling - and that pretty much sums it up for me. Dr What perhaps? ;)

Good one Alan,
Neil

Norman Goodman said 314 days ago

Beautiful piece of music... very powerful, masterfully arranged.....tremendous wall of sound.....mix is very well balanced and crystal clear...Loved It!

lupiroz said 312 days ago
Very cool
the way you "dressed" the guitar part, with an interesting use of strings and electronic addings.....a fresh mood!

said 312 days ago
Very Nice
Very cinematic feel, loved the work very much. The guitar was a nice addition too. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Caroline mentioned Dr Who
I was going to say a 60's TV theme with a bit of updating. Its really cool though and would be good theme music for TV or Movie.

Proteus V

Hi
Thanks,
I enjoyed listening to your song very much
and thank you so much for sharing. As you are aware I am not an expert. And still have sooo much to learn
from great musicians such as your self too. I mean that most sincerely as well. Cheers.

Peace Dee.

Stopping the music is like
taking candy away from a baby. You are a fine composer and I guess I am in the mood to hear more of this. Thanks for the taste.
