Description Valentine's Day is also my beautiful wife's birthday. For a change I decided to something more than pick up a card at the last minute on the way home from work. This song was written with her in mind. Quite simply, she is my everything and I truly cannot imagine my life without her. She controls the chaos that I could be.... and makes me a better person than I am. (Except for my tendency to procrastinate... that's a lost cause.)

This is the second version of this song and features a beautiful recorder solo by VicDiesel (who also mastered this in Logic). Victor, thank you!
Lyrics Without You-
by Adam Clarke
©2006 Adam Clarke

Once upon a day I saw this pretty girl
She met me smiling and she showed me round her world
You know I loved her then but I didn't have a clue
I just can't make it without you

Years have come and gone and troubles they been mine
Hand in hand we walk- we never crossed that line
You know I'd make it on my own, oh if I could
I just can't make it without you

Troubles that we've had would tear most love apart
Somehow we get closer you're touchin' all my heart
I never wanna be in a world without you
I just can't make it without you

Hey Adam,
this is a well written song, I really like what its saying and how you say it.
I also like the melody and I think your vocal performance is A .

really nice
paul

aclarke said 329 days ago
Appreciated!
Thanks, Paul. This one didn't change much from the first sketch to this more polished (but still imperfect) edition. I love it when that happens!

Karmatoburn said 329 days ago
without you
What a great V day gift for your better half. Me thinks you set the bar too high for us slackers who just go the card route :-) Loved the recorder, Vic, nice job. Right in the pocket!

aclarke said 329 days ago
Nice thought, KTB!
Problem is maybe I set the bar too high for next year!

said 329 days ago
this is
the best kind of valentine gift.. very pretty, and the lyrics speak volumes about your love for your girl.

"This is the second version of this song and features a beautiful recorder solo by VicDiesel (who also mastered this in Logic). Victor, thank you!"

whew...for a minute there i thought you were gonna say the alternate version was for another girl... hahahahaha! take care, brother, and have a great V-day

That would be
a fatal mistake! Too funny, Allen. Thanks for the listen!!

great simple honest reality... love it! Lyrics/singing/guitar/recorder make this a super Valentine's gift, and Victor's mixing makes this message sparkle. Here's to Valentines every day!

aclarke said 324 days ago
Thanks!
There was no question I was going to redo completely once I heard Victor's recorder on the original... really made it quite special, I think!

davisamerica said 329 days ago
right then
great song... great sentiment... sounds kinda like Dylan.. which is my way of saying "wow"..... very cool

aclarke said 324 days ago
Wow- thanks!
Certainly wasn't trying to emulate Dylan (and thank you for the compliment) but I guess it isn't surprising. My folks listed to a lot of Dylan, etc in the 60's and 70's. It was bound to show up in my music one day.

Thanks again!

Hi

your vocals are to die for. I can't sing for toffee, thank you for sharing this darlin of love song.

ziti said 329 days ago
i have heard
a few versions of this now...and again I marvel at your ability to write lovely, meat and potatoes, working man type music. really. it seems so simple, but the depth comes from the simplicity and honesty, not from a chord structure....we have discussed the concept of "3 chords and the truth" before, adam. This is the textbook.

Vic's production put a great sheen on the tune. the guitars sound great, as do the vocals. The pennywhistle is very neat, and cleverly played indeed. Found the ending of the solo abit awkward. I would have liked to hear vic continue to play, in response to the vocal. I think that would really help built the momentum heading to the ending of the tune.

Nice nice work...really puts a smile on the kisser.

deeep bows

z

VicDiesel said 329 days ago
Ahem.
That's a recorder, not a pennywhistle.

Yeah, after I played that solo Adam suggested that it should really somehow continue into those ending vocals, but we ran out of time for Valentine's.

jiguma said 329 days ago
Nice one Adam!
Beautiful production for a start - nice and clear and lovely acoustic sound. Vic's recorder ain't bad either. I bet your wife loved getting this - beats a card .... maybe even roses :)
Lovely sentiments, well played and sung.

Recorder solo
That fit in quite well, guys. I loved this song before, but even better now.

Cool Valentine's gift, and the words you've spoken in the decription above and in the lyrics speak to your love - nice, Adam

I Know the Feeling
Wonderful sentiment summed up in this simple song.

Very nice, Adam.

I must say, I was really getting into this Dylanesque performance, when all of a sudden, what I thought was going to be a harmonica break... turned into an airy recorder solo (nice job on that, Vic). ;)

--- Joe

aclarke said 328 days ago
Hi Joe
You know, I was thinking this would be redone with harmonica and then Vic shared a mix from the original posting with his recorder and it just seemed right. If he hadn't offered I likely would never have considered it on my own. Obviously, I'm glad he did!

dajama said 328 days ago
I've always liked this song
and it just sounds better in this version. Great feeling, tied to a nice melody, and expressively performed - what more could you ask for? This is a great song, and the addition of the recorder gives it extra sweetness, if that's possible. Terrific. Peace.

This is great! Vocal delivery is perfect! Nice acoustic tone, too.
My wife has been half-jokingly on me to write her a love song since I got into music. So far haven't taken a serious shot at it. You may have inspired me. Keep up the great work!

Pongo said 303 days ago
Wow...
...dude, that was some of the best music I've heard in a while. Very touching song too, and the recorder solo makes it sound uplifting in the middle. I wouldn't mind hearing that on the radio...

Scott Carmichael said 302 days ago
Hi Adam
with all the work that gets posted here... it's surprising how little of it is radio ready... and primed for a listening public.. you've found a way to say the thing that gets said over and over in love songs, in a fresh way... really good writing... But the vocal really shines in this offering... and the guitar is just right...

I know you posted under folk-rock... and it certainly is ... but this is so accessible... and unpretentious... it is a great pop tune too

aclarke said 285 days ago
Scott
Hopefully you know how much I value and appreciate your comments...this is no exception. Thank you for the huge ego boost!

Moviz said 289 days ago
This
is a much nicer recording than the previous one and it's such a nice simple folk song well sung. Someone close will be very pleased with this and with your honesty in the lyrics and the description. Regards M

aclarke said 285 days ago
Thank you so much!
Everything was re-recorded for this attempy... but Vic gets the credit for making the mix sound good. And yes, Someone was pleased with this! Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment, Moviz.

said 289 days ago
jest plain good
vocals straight from the heart as the crow of love flies - it doesn't get any better than this. vic's contribution of crisp and clear recorder complemented the strong and steady guitar quite nicely, with a change in voice but keeping the flavor of the mood. i really like this mix - harmony right in the pocket volume-wise, and the vocals sit in the midst of the music beautifully. if i had a hat, i'd take it off to you. and thanks to the missus! - happy men make happy music. i enjoyed this piece, adam.
anne

aclarke said 285 days ago
jest plain thanks! :)
I have to admit this was one of the easiest songs to write... it literally was written on the fly almost exactly as it is today... don't you love it when that happens? I'm glad to say my Anne loved the song! Thank you, other Anne! heheh

Very nice song with a very strong Dylan influence in the singing. Good lyrics. I love the flute. Very clean sound.

Bernardo- I appreciate you taking the time to listen. In this song the flute is actually a recorder... I never knew there was much of a difference until I heard another of Vic's song.

Thanks again!

Man...
Just reading your liner notes made me cloud up, I think! I was listening at the same time so, we can't really know how to call this one...

Very touching, Adam! I'm thinking that your wife is pretty lucky and it sounds like evenstevenville at your house. That's a cool thing.

This piece nicely represents the warmth and sincerity of your words. Everything is so clear and purely, expressed. Beautiful words. Beautiful song.

Pretty special, to say the least.

Thanks for sharing something so meaningful. As a whole, the entire package, the song, and the gesture and all, it's clearly from the heart.

Dion

Cloudy
What's up with the "e" at the end of Clark? And now people are using this as a LAST name??? WHERE'S MY HEART MEDICINE?

Okay, regarding the song, like Dion, I kind of clouded up reading the lyrics. There's something amazingly powerful that happens when one human being chooses to love another, and this is a song about that. Great wedding pic, by the way! I agree as well with the comment that you sound like Dylan. Bob, that is. Not Thomas.

Anyway, really nice song, and very touching.

reminds me of when i was dating my wife listenin' to "brown-eyed girl"
my wife's birthday, and anniversary are all in the same week as valentine's. the vocals are cool reminds me of dylan's style alot smoother though. good harmony parts. the recorder makes me smile it really works and thats kinda rare. i read your bio: i don't know what i'm doing the force helps me play! ha ha!! i can relate to that. this thing just gives a cool little vibe. well.......may the force be with you............

The hardest thing to do (for me, at least) is to effectively tell my wife how much she means to me in song. My attempts usually sound weak. This, however, is very powerful. It's very sweet and well done. Your annunciation is great for this sound. Well done!
