Description DON'T PANIC!
even though there are two songs here, they are short (barely 4 minutes total)

I thought I would do something a little different. The first tune is fully produced. the second is more in a demo style.

The first song is the rocker. It's in drop D tuning. Now if I could only sing like Roger Daultrey on this one.

The second song I thought it would be interesting to do the opposite. Slow, acoustic and like I mentioned more of a demo style. My only rule to it, was to do each track in one pass. The guitars are also capoed at the 5th fret.
Lyrics Only Want Things

I only want things like a decent life
only want things that make me happy
i only want things

only want days quite and peace
dream of days grant me this please
only want days that fade away
dream of days i can fall asleep
only want days in a soft haze

I only want things like a decent life
only want things that make me happy
i only want things

only want smiles show me some teeth
delver peace from everything
only want dreams even in sleep
give me air when i need to breathe
only want things that agree with me

only want time it's still ticking
erase the scars they remind me
only want walls there to hide
bring me a box for the memories
only want rain there to cool me

only want things like a decent life
only want things that make me happy
i only want things

song 2: So So

had this dream i would never awake
sleep comes down hard
give me time
i try to rise
give me more time please

try to wake me
I'm so so sleepy
try to shake me
I'm so so sleepy

the whole day i live in a haze
dreamed i was awake
it's to dark
I'm to old
i am to far asleep

try to wake me
I'm so so sleepy
try to shake me
I'm so so sleepy

I'll buy that.
#1... loving that guitar. Sounds great even on these little at-work speakers. Rocking groove, Vic.

#2... the acoustic pause that refreshes. Beautiful guitar and lovely playing there. Your songwriting is amazing. Too short but quite satisfying. What acoustic guitar was that?

Gotta go... thanks for the morning cup of Vic!

Vic Holman said 331 days ago
thanks Jack
a double shot espresso on the first tune. come to think about it that's the first time i have submitted a song with drop D tuning. the second cup of decaf to bring one down from the rush. I was almost going to make it shorter and as a fade out.

echoroom said 331 days ago
Show Off!
Sheeit, not one, but two excellent tracks.... what a show off.

Both of these sound kinda different to your normal sound, which I think is great. No. 1 is my immediate fav, and one of the best you've done - punchy, direct, rocky and catchy as hell.

No. 2 is a great counterbalance, a lovely track tenderly sung.

Damn you Holman... you've raised the bar so high I cant see it!

Vic Holman said 331 days ago
Thanks Steve
I was itching to get a rocker out. I tend to rock even harder when I'm just jamming out. I thought it turned out pretty good. And yes I'll take the knock on the side of the head for the distorted vocal. I know you have used it a few times. I had that done before your collab with Alan & Ian. I almost was going to drop it. But, well I'll take the knock on the head.

The second one was a bit inspired from some reissue CD's that would include outtakes never released. the bar is still open and in easy reach.

echoroom said 330 days ago
Distorted vocal
... i tend touse it all the time now, 'cxause i just like how it sounds... louder!

SINGIN ! COOL SOUNDS!

WAY TO GO!

Vic Holman said 331 days ago
thanks Bill
I thought it would be interesting to do a ying and yang type of thing. the first one took some work. But the second was pretty quick and painless. It was fun to try this approach out.

DWL said 331 days ago
Bloody hell Vic
Here I am struggling with one song in God knows how many weeks and you're producing loads.

Not only that but they're bloody good as well. If the 2nd song is just a demo I think I might just give up....

The 1st song is brilliant rocker with loads going on.

Yeah, I think I might give up......

Cheers

Dick

Vic Holman said 331 days ago
hey Dick
blame it on my couch! at night when i kick back i have an acoustic at the end that i fiddle with ideas on. seems to work. I have a feeling I am going to keep that couch for years to come. It must have some mojo.

You know how much I look forward to your songs. So don't pull a disappearing act.

a true magic ..man what a production ..you Rock !!!
the keys made a total spheric there behind the pickin

Deep Bow my friend ...this is one of your best !!!!

Vic Holman said 331 days ago
Thanks Feter
after i laid the guitars down I thought it had kind of a Who sound to it. So, I tried my best to go the Kieth Moon route.

on the second i added the strings to fill out the mid area since i recorded the acoustics with a capo on the 5th fret.

cjdaley said 331 days ago
Who ?
I like the intro, and the drive of the first. The bridge is great. The "telephone voice" backing vocals just when and as many a sthey should be for me. Fav'd

The second song is a paradoxical lullaby (a "wakabye") taht's really pretty.

The lyrical connection of the two songs make them go well together, it's a bit like part I and Part II.

Vic Holman said 331 days ago
who better bet
I'm really glad you liked it. I needed to get the adreneline going.

And I was wondering if anyone was going to get the connection between the two songs. You get a gold star.

Moviz said 331 days ago
Great Rocker
and great vocal and guitar on song 1 good lyrics too... who needs Roger Daltry??

This is a double 'A' side with two great songs. Love the playing and singing on both. Not being greedy, but would have liked more of the second song its so nice, cheers M

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
thanks Maurice
i tried to pretend to be roger by swinging the mike around. except it kept banging into the wall.

the second one might be developed into a longer piece down the road. I was treating it as a out take type of thing

davisamerica said 331 days ago
right then vic
is a bit of a who rocker ... but u own the sound totally which is way knock out .... #1 Made Me Very Happy indeed.... #2 flowed nicely into 1... wow Mr. Holman ... wow

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
who knew
yeah, i was getting a who vibe from the chorus guitar. Then i thought i would go ballistic on the drums. the second one was for a cool off period!

said 331 days ago
very nice
groovy, and head-bobbin tunes...the one take approach is my bread and butter. it gives the music such a raw live feel i think you can lose after several takes... i heard alot of british influence....

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Allen
i'm sure i was influenced by the british invasions.

I agree there does need to be the human element. The second one was all one pass on each track and surprisingly quickly done

Z293 said 331 days ago
A little bit...
different for you but it still has the Vic Holman feel to it. Great production and for me I wouldn't call the second song a demo, sounds pretty clean to me. Are the drums from Logic? I like them.

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
different is good
going with a different tuning kinda helps to step out at times.

the drums: yeah, that is through Logic. i usually set up 3 separate tracks. And play them on the keyboard. AND lately, I've gotten into penciling additional drum hits and rolls to what i had.

lengold said 331 days ago
Both songs
are so expertly written and performed that they showcase your versatility and talent perfectly. Excellent.
Cheers
Len

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Len
After the first one I thought a simpler one would be cool as a surprise. And for some reason they seem to fit together. Not sure why. but ya never know.

Thanks for the kind words!

said 331 days ago
Sweet
This is the closest to Punk rock Ive heard from you , unbelievable the sound quality you get...I like the second track as much as the first, youve got a concept thing going on with these two segments, neat Idea and exceptional tracks Vic!

Just hard edged real rock n roll it dont get any better...

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Hey Tom
I thought you might get a good kick out of the first one. I had been thinking that I hadn't really posted much of anything all balls out. So, I'll be trying to cover more ground this year. The second one was for a cool off.

Ejh said 331 days ago
I HAVE been waiting for that acoustic song...
...and now that it has arrived, I really like it, except that it fades out and is done too soon...

Way more than demo quality... Love the guitar tone and the vocal...

Ed

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Ed
originally i was only going to do just the first half and set it in closer to the fade out of the first. Theres a short untitled song on the white album that does that, and got me thinking. But, then I thought to go ahead and expand it a little for this.

Chances are that I will work on it more down the road. I thought it would be interesting to tag it on as a demo or work in progress.

ajnorth said 331 days ago
How
do you keep doing it! These are great, although I feel they should have been posted separately. I'd love to hear the second one as a longer piece.
Adam

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Adam
Believe me I did a lot of crappy songs when i first was getting into garageband 4 years ago. Takes practic, just like learning how to play an instrument.

The second tune more then likely will be further developed. here it is like a work in progress demo

Ibstrat said 331 days ago
yes
this is what rock & roll should sound like!Exceptional. Nice contrast between the songs

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Mark
It was the drop tuning that got me fired up to start with. Plus, I haven't heard any rocking CD's this past year. So, I figured might as well do it myself.

said 331 days ago
Too (or two) Cool!
The first track ROCKS!!!

The second track has a really catchy melody that got me to fire up the piano and play along.

Both are super tracks Vic! Enjoyed them very much.

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Mike
I have been meaning to get a tougher tune out. I was playing around in drop D tuning and the idea for it came about. Really had to play around with it considering there is a lot going on .

The second one, the chords came pretty quick of just dinking around one evening. I recorded it all the next afternoon in a very short time.

Nick_Flash said 331 days ago
nice combo
Rock opera makes a comeback. This reminds me of something off Greenday's last album - it goes straight from a rocker right into a mellow feel. I think its a cool combo.

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
rock opera
that is something that has been playing in the back of my mind for some time. a bunch of 1 to 2 minute songs maybe.

I don't know if you knew but greenday has an alias band called foxboro hottubs posted online. playing garageband type of originals on their site. google it and there will be links. you wouldn't know it's tem until billy stars singing

blaky smith said 331 days ago
Excellent
Excellent, the first as the second, hard to say which is my fav...
I'm dancing on the first, dreaming on the second !
Always this great guitar playing and vocals in this pure style "Vic Holman".
Thanks Vic

dancing and dreaming, now that is something. I am glad you liked them both. chances are the second one will be developed more in time to come.

Hey Kenta
someday, maybe there will be a six pack song compilation to drink beer and party to. lol

lavalamp said 330 days ago
This is great Vic
The guitars are tasty on this one. It does have a nice "Who" feel to this. I think you did an outstanding job of singing.....and well produced as usual.

2nd song is also quite brilliant.
Sorry I was a bit late to hit this......just a couple of hours you know.
Dave

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Hey Dave
Vic does the Who or Who does the Vic. Really had to work all out on the first one to get it where I was comfortable with it.

Heck, you aren't that late considering you are half way around the world. Thanks Dave

rsorensen said 330 days ago
totally
Rockin'!! I love the way the guitar doubles the vocals. I also like the contrast between the two. It's like a super-mini rock opera. Great songs Vic!

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
actually
almost everything is doubled except the drums and bass. I thought a ying and yang approach to two different songs would be interesting to tryout.

bud said 330 days ago
Track 1 blows me away Vic -
one of your best - I think the fast and loose style suits you really well. The drums were killer and the energy overall was really fresh. Well done.
Damn - I was just getting into track 2 when it ended. I'll take that as a "to be continued" I hope. Very tasty morsel.

Vic Holman said 330 days ago
Thanks Bud
not to old to rock.
I'm sure there will be more this year.
true the second will be worked on more. this was a start. I thought it was cool how some reissue CD's have added outtakes or demos to them. thought i would try that.

I was tempted to finish it off and do your A side B side concept. Sometime I know I will do that.

KCsGROOVE said 329 days ago

Nice stuff Vic.

Like all the sounds you make here - especially the bass, which has just enough mid and treble in it.

I bet you had a ball on this one :)

Neil

Vic Holman said 328 days ago
Thanks Neil
It's all about making noise. That's rock and roll. I did have a lot fun. the first one really got my adrenaline going.

I'm really enjoying my new bass. with the active pickups and parametric eq's i can really dial in some great tones.

michael2 said 328 days ago
nice songs Vic
the first one is an excellent rocker, and that second one is such a great slow song. as i listened for the second one to come in i found myself wishing the last distorted chord of the first rang out more into the beginning of the second (rock opera style). great job man, been sick all week so i just discovered this.

Vic Holman said 328 days ago
Hi MICHAEL
sorry about your being ill. I've been lucky not to come down with anything (knock on wood). Once in a while I'll fool around with an alternate tuning. This time something popped right out.

I know what you mean about blending the two. I tried that, but dummy me, I should of had added a few bars at the beginning before the vocals came in. The second song I will be expanding and make it complete down the road

said 328 days ago
Wow Vicar!!! : )
I Love This! Put me a little in mind of the Beatles for some odd reason. This does seem a bit of an interesting new direction musically speaking - and I'm very fond of the lyrics - what is truly important in this life - it's never about the money - with age comes wisdom and contentment with the simple things. : ) All I ever wanted... well... it finally came my way. : )
And Boy!!! Can I ever identify with your sleepy song!!! God invented morning - man should never have invented the snooze alarm - I'm chronically late due to semiconscious slapping at the darned thing!!! : )
Please do send the snow pic! I want to see what all you and Ax are having to put up with! : ) Here snow disappears in two days! : )

Vic Holman said 328 days ago
Thanks CJ
Money doesn't buy everything. some of the best things are free! the simple things are best. Well, I might have to break down and buy a snow blower for next winter. that, unfortunately isn't free. You'll see by the photos I e-mailed you already. And Ax over in Coeur D'Alene recieved a little more snow then we did. That's only 30 mile difference

said 328 days ago
HOly Whoa what VIc
You go MAn!!!!! This makes me happy greatness I will speak no more!!!!!!

Vic Holman said 328 days ago
Thanks Tim
I am really glad you liked it. I've really been getting into pumping up the drums a lot more since our collab. You motivated me in that department.

TEXASFEEL said 328 days ago
Love the driving guitars
Very melodic. Nice job and great separation on the guitars. Clean mix.

Vic Holman said 327 days ago
Thanks John
Appreciate the mention of the guitars standing out alone. That is a tough chore to define in a mix,
Your new revised tune is dynamite!

Alannah said 328 days ago
I like ....
.. that little backing vocal in there (on the first tune) .... did you use the megaphone effect? I like it .... I still gotta make that old "beatles" reference tho when I heard the 2nd tune .... (at the very least a John Lennon reference) ... I think you could give the "lost tracks" thing some justice!

Vic Holman said 327 days ago
Hi Alannah
That megaphone effect, I set up using a high pass filter set pretty high and a little distortion. The second tune you're probably picking up Lennon's I'm so tired from the white album, which, in a way is intentional and I will be expanding on what I laid out here. god help me.

Scott Carmichael said 327 days ago
Concept Album
early concept albums had this flow of songs.. (Beatles) it made perfect sense, so in my ear it sounds like one work... maybe one could run right into the other... anyway the second sound like a closing of the first... then there is your trademark Vic H songwriting and performance/production... you've mastered the craft from every perspective.... and I like it that this starts out with a bit of that arena rock flavor (the non spandex variety)...

Vic Holman said 327 days ago
Thanks Scott
.. for the kind words. If I had of planned it out, I would of added a few bars at the beginning of the second song so I could of faded in. It is kinda weird how the two songs could fit as one. Down the road I more than likely will finish off the second tune.

This has started to give me some ideas for what could be done. Maybe a three song mini opera as others have suggested.

honestly i just try to keep up with everyone else and keep myself entertained. otherwise i would have to clean out the basement

dajama said 327 days ago
I love the first song
Great, driving rush at the beginning, settling into a great forward groove. Love the guitar sound - you rock the ax, as always - and the drums sounds solid as a rock. Love the lyrics, too, and another great vocal performance. Love the idea of the two songs together, by the way. Talk about overflowing with ideas! The second track is sweet in an entirely different way. Like the guitar sound, and the sentiment. Great vocal, and lovely counterpoint to the first track. Nicely done. Peace.

Vic Holman said 327 days ago
thanks David
i appreciate you giving it a listen. after doing a slow song i need to crank it up. and the first one is what came about........... then for some reason i slowed down again for the second

Your new song is dynamite!!

stevec said 326 days ago
double shot!
I really like the contrast between the two tunes, shows a lot of range and depth. First one had an excellent guitar groove, production was really well done & i thought vocals were great - no Roger required! Wished the 2nd tune was longer, be interested to hear the finished version.

Well done on both & thanks for sharing!
Steve

Vic Holman said 326 days ago
Thanks Steve
I thought the opposite styles would make an interesting combination. I will in time, finish off the last tune and post that down the road. Anyway I don't think I could of afford the cost of Roger to do this anyway.

Mcboy said 326 days ago
liked
them both......the holman touch.....unique and familiar at the same time....kool!

Vic Holman said 326 days ago
Thanks Mcboy
true the holman touch, couldn't even of done it without fingers. Thought it would interesting to hear how 2 songs of different styles would mesh. more of a an experiment at first, but now I think I should expand on the last one.

Dennis James said 325 days ago
Nice....
.....very original Vic. Tough guitar.

And number 2....top sound, all kinda 1968....which is GOOD to me.

Vic Holman said 324 days ago

I have a theory that the music we first learn to play tends to stay with us. could be ingrained

I've always been waiting for your acoustical song, and now what a great mix your did by melting the acoustical one with your original style. Truly blown away by the work sir. Great post ...... Downloaded for sure!
