Keywords willow (2)last (16)time (80)bog of eternal stench (1) ()
Description A rebuild of a song I posted earlier. Only this time I got by with a little help from my friends.
Anne Cozean a.k.a. Sisters
Yeman Al-Rawi a.k.a. Birdman Wayne
Dick Langford a.k.a DWL
All on vocals (and quite nicely I might add)
Allen Dean also put some effort into this that, alas, I wasn't able to use in the end, but thank you for the attempt.
Thanks you guys you've made this tune better than it ever could have been without you!
Lyrics Willow would you tell for me a tale
Willow would you tell for me a tale

I've been wonderin
what that tale would be

Willow would you sing for me a ryhme
Willow would you sing for me a ryhme

I've been wonderin
what that ryhme would be

This could be the last time I hang my head in shame
This could be the last time I close my eyes to your pain

willow would you build for m a home
willow would you build for me a home

I've been wandering for so long
I've been wandering for too long

Willow would you say a prayer for us
Willow would you say a prayer for us

We are fading
To the dust

This could be the last time
I hang my head in shame

This could be the last time
I close my eyes to your pain

This could be the last time
This could be the last time

WOW this is incredible ...I notice all the voices
and I m so impressed by the authnetic and how its
metled all in this great song ..the OUD(arabian lute)
is nicely worked here ..just geat all over my friends
well done !

Peter Bauckham said 344 days ago
Wonderful
collaboration. So pleased you've re-worked this song. The vocals are really impressive - lovely harmonies from Anne. Production sounds very good. Very different to the original - which is one of my favourite, and rather neglected, MacJams songs. It might take me a while to adjust to this one as I am so familiar with the earlier version especially the tempo change - but there are some enhancements.

I'm glad you like it, I hope it grows on you like it has me.
Thanks for listening again.

I sure it will!
I have it on my iTunes playlist - along with the original. I love the new arrangement. Excellent work from all who participated!

Don't know when was the last time I heard something so beautiful and, quite special too.

What a treat!

Dion

the...
acoustics sound really nice as well, what mic are you using?

pablatone said 343 days ago
!!
Thanks guys,
The mic on the acoustic is a berringer b-2,

This was a good experience, the hardest part about it was trying to keep it from flying out of control. There are so many tools available in Logic that you have to be ruthless in what goes in and what stays out. I'm afraid I've stepped on some toes in the process.
I'm very happy with the results though, and working with these folks has been pretty much a blast. I definitely want to do it again.

How can it miss....
with such a fine lineup of talented MJers.Lots of wonderful elements one can focus on.The flute, all the guitar work and solid vocals make this one to remember.Very much enjoyed the experience.

What an
exceptionally beautiful song! I can hear the loving attention it has been given by all involved. Downloaded. Thanks.

Captivating!
To mirror what Dion said- this is extremely beautiful. Hauntingly beautiful. I was lured in from the first strains of the song and had to listen twice (would have been more if not for the whole work thing). Downloaded to future appreciation. This is really terrific!

This is a great collab
The vocals are outstanding from everyone. The sounds of the instrumentation, and the placement in the mix, is perfect. I love the lyrics, and the expression of the words by everybody singing is sweet. Very cool song. Thanks for sharing. Peace.

drakonis said 343 days ago
movie soundtrack quality
Well well, this is an excellent song! Intriguing choices of sounds, the initial choir, the Oud, the sound effects, all give this an eerie-but-familiar feel. I would have made the "loon call" a little quieter and more echoey... it was loud enough and melodic enough to almost sound like an instrument that was going terribly wrong, until I realized what it was :-) Nice haunting music, lyrics, and singing. Is that Yeman playing the Oud? Willow, I haven't seen the movie in decades... but if I remember correctly, the "Bog of eternal stench" is from Henson's "Labyrinth" (with David Bowie), another fun-but-dated fantasy movie.
ttfn,
Drakonis

pablatone said 343 days ago
But I love the loon!! ;-)
thanks Drakonis, actually it has nothing to do with either of those movies. It really is about a tree.

pablatone said 343 days ago
Oh yeah
the oud is an apple loop from the world jam pack, you can take the green ones and destroy them completely. They seem to enjoy it.

wow-wee
paul - what an awesome job on the music. that solo break is incredible! put between the oh so good voices of Yeman and Dick - i'm in excellent company. oh oh - here comes another lump in my throat as i take another listen. so sad, so sweet, so good! thanks for inviting me to be part of this.

Hey Tone
This is epic. Great Job of production. Subtle blend of everyones talent. First time I've heard a Birdman vocal.
(Sounds Great) And the guitar solo added the perfect flavoring. Double Harmonic Major? I'll have to learn that one. Very enjoyable. Regards

pablatone said 341 days ago
thank you buck
almost went with the double harmonic, but opted for 1/2 platonic with a twist in the seventh flat four, it only occurs when you listen to the music backwards, so folks often make that mistake. good ear though, good ear.

J.A.Stewart said 343 days ago
Strong Anchor
The instrumental performances here provide a very strong anchor for the whole song. Great folk guitar part with nice tone, mixed with some pleasant complementary harmony parts. The Oud provides an exotic touch to the arrangement and was well-conceived and played.

I would agree with Drak that the loon should be more of a *suggested element* in the mix and used a bit more sparingly.

The gentle vocal harmonies work very well, reminiscent of Peter, Paul and Mary. THAT... makes it pretty good stuff.

Excellent collab, my friends. ;)

Bombs *Away*
I just noticed someone *Low-Bombed* this piece as I was writing my comments.

I wasn't going to vote on it right now, but now I will... and attempt to right this ship... it is worthy. ;)

pablatone said 343 days ago
J.A.'s got my six
Thanks J,
I just couldn't help myself with the loon.

Yeah, I think I have a good idea who bombed me. Oh well. To tell you the truth I don't pay that much attention to the ratings, I'm really happy to have even a few people listen to my songs. It makes all worth the effort. I've gone from none to a dozen or so almost over night, I think that's awesome. Some folks have even been touched by some of the tunes, that's more than I could ask for. I'm way past the age of worrying about my popularity, so bombs away.

Thanks for the critique though, I do always want to improve my craft.

thought you might like to see my sister marty's take on hearing this song:*******

MIGHTY, mighty fine song, you guys....sissie, I was thinking, "Man, I haven't heard her EVER do angel voices that well before....". OK...so that took me a minute to figure out. Then that howling....was thinking, "MAN, that's one of her best howls EVER!" OK...so THAT took me a minute to figure out, too. But oh, then that guitar and then the REAL vocals started....that melody is great...NICE build-up and some wonderful flavors of harmony and musical meldings going on. KUDOS....I even love that modest "thank you" at the end.

Back after another listen...wanted to commend both you men for YOUR vocals...don't know who's doing what, but there's a nice cross of rough and smooth going on there....and the crispness of the guitar at the end is especially exquisite....just needed to spew some more and am NOW done...//marty

love
the whole atmosphere of the song Paul!
I know finally, what the rhythm reminds me of. A steam engine dashing through the blue hills of dusky wilderness, somewhere far far away.
Very, but very interesting is that light touch of Middle East in that guitar solo in about middle of song and at the end. Very lovely vocal, all of them. And ADORE that howling wolf, because he makes a huge part of that magic.
A truly wonderful music, every single bit of it.
Huge congratulations! :)

pablatone said 341 days ago
thank you C!
I glad you liked it. The rhythm always reminds me of camels for some reason. A lot of folks comment that it sounds like some type of journey, I think that's pretty neat.

This is one of the tightest musical pieces I've heard in quite some time....Excellent use of instruments with simple lyrics that let the music do the heavy lifting....I'd like to get my hands on the people who would give this a 5 or 6 they must have has musical lobotomies. A definite download for me...Thanks...and all 10's just to make up for the musically challenged people who give low scores to a real work of art!.....So there!.....

Enjoy the
intro, the choir. Makes for a nice start, nice fingerstyle, like the coyote sound, I think it is that sound, then the wings sound. Enjoyed the singing pablastone. Very nice Anne ! So great to hear these culture sounds. Feel like I am on a nice journey out of the US and I don't have to pay plane fare.

Balance
I think this is a great song and a great arrangement. You take your sweet time with everything, the length of the choral intro, the way various elements are slowly introduced. The whole architecture is very spacious which contributes to the feeling you're trying to convey. It's not often that I see form and content of a song coming together like this. Big compliment.

Now about some of your samples: the vibrato on that recorder is exceedingly irritating. Can you find a sample without vibrato? (Tellingly, when you add a second voice it has the exact same vibrato, which turns it into a grinder organ.) Two: When that oud solo start you put a wail of some eastern flute under it. I'd get rid of that. Introducing two new elements into the mix at the same time makes it sound like you are just throwing stuff together for no other reason than that you have it and feel compelled to use it. It also destroys the feeling that you have a band playing: it turns it into a bucket of samples.

pablatone said 338 days ago
Hey Vic, thanks for
both the compliments and critique. It's good to know folks are giving the tune serious attention.

Sir Paul, I'm impressed with the last version after the re-mixing and re-mastering. You're an amazing guy Mr. Paul and I'm really so proud to be a part of this amazing collaboration project. Anne's harmonies and vocal parts are just charming. Dick, how I love your vocal? Just so calm, cute and relaxing one. Great performances by all. Sure can't forget your work, I was really surprised when you sent me the new version with another guitar track (fingerstyle one), I'm in love with that sound now man! What key you played this with?

Great to find that this song did well, great comments from all which we all thankful and especially to Drakonis and VicDiesel.

Great song....
The melody, the loping bass and the hand drum are really great... The mix, including stereo spread, is very balanced and effective...

Nice job on the lyrics... And the guitar playing is perfect for the tune...

I actually like the loon...

The vocals are terrific. The SISTERS vocal at 'Willow would you say a prayer..." is exquisite...

The only minor suggestion I'd make is that, listening over headphones, there are just a couple of spots where it seems that the lead and the backing vocals don't come in at the same time, and I might think that some very careful slicing and nudging would line up those syllables. This is very minor...

Sorry it took me so long to get here. This is quite beautiful.

Ed

pablatone said 333 days ago

Yeah, you heard right, they are just a little off. I tried to use a dip in the volume to get a closer attack and release, I was a little nervous about changing the tracks themselves because I don't really trust my computer to not lose things. Too many years in the analog world. I'll get over it eventually.

I think.

i really like the mood of this - the instrumentation harkens thoughts of Peru. and the vocals add to the feeling - it's something about the harmonies.

thanks

pablatone said 333 days ago
Glad you liked it Smokey
I've always loved the sound of Peruvian music, there's something melancholy about it that just gets to me. So it was nice to see those instruments in the world jam pack.
