Description I haven't done anything new, at least from scratch, in a long, long time. So yesterday I set up to record. Found a drum loop I liked and started messing around with some riffs. From there I basically hit record and improvised the rest. Last night I sent Fran the file to have him listen to it and get his thoughts. He sent it back within an hour with some killer lead guitar and bass. A little tweak with the EQ and we said "done". One of the fastest collabs in MJ history was on the books.

It took me longer to write these notes than to record the song.

This sounds best loud... ironic in that not one of the guitar tracks was played through an amp speaker during recording. I used my Ibanez Artcore AXD81 plugged into my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (external speaker unplugged) straight into my Powerbook- no effects except for the slight reverb I added in GB. Fran played Ruby into his Pod (Mesa Boogie setting) straight into his Mac. Drum loop is a Drums on Demand sample(chugger) that I love! Song art was pulled from the web.

***No family members were disturbed in the making of this song.***
Hardware Adam- Ibanex AXD81 guitar, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp, PowerBook G4, medium Fender pick (tortoise shell)

Fran- Ruby, a bass, Pod and mac
Software: GarageBand

rock n roll.........sounds like fun was had in the making of this song.....hehhehhe

aclarke said 347 days ago
undeniably fun!
If you're not having fun then there really is no point. No stress in this tune- just lots of high octane enjoyment!

thetiler said 347 days ago
Enjoyed the two
contrasting styles, I don't always enjoy rock and roll cause I don't always hear enough melodic character, but there really seems plenty of it here.
It almost kind of reminds me of your post about your son at the forum. Only on steroids, Enjoyed the funky lower end drive and the incredible, humor bluesy Ziti playing. There is a lightness that Zita plays that it seems to me sets him apart from a lot of players. The combination of you two is quite fun to hear.

Thanks for sharing !

aclarke said 347 days ago
Hi Bill
Thanks for the kind words! No question- Ziti can get his head around so many styles it's mind boggling. What's most impressive is how he always manages to sound like himself even on any genre of song.

Not only a great musician but someone I'm proud to call a friend.

thnx for sharin ... DEEP BOW !!

aclarke said 347 days ago
Heheh
I've been trying to get Fran to play some good old rock and roll for sometime now. Though I thought I knew what to expect the old dog surprised me yet again. Amazing, huh?!

drakonis said 347 days ago
Ha!
Great rocker... makes me want to slide into my tight leather pants, poof out my hair, and straddle the mic stand... woohooo! :-) Ahem, definitely a great collab here. Keeping the "loopy" drums back a bit kept their repetition from getting too distracting... now, dare I suggest you send this off to PerceptualVortex to spice up the drum side too?

ttfn,
Drakonis

Too funny
We all know spandex is the stage material of choice for most self respecting dragons! heheh.

Since I have difficulty posting a song one time I already have some ideas about a different version of this... more Pop-rock and definitely with some vocal and drum variety. I'll probably try to do something with the drums (never learn otherwise) but I'd be surprised if I don't call on David at some point on this.

Thanks, Drak! Dragons always welcome when we're playing arenas. Those little clubs are a bit more limiting!

ledebutant said 347 days ago
Fun!
This song is really great fun, guys. I'm especially glad to see you posting something new Adam. Rock on! That's the best part (although the music's not too shabby, either).

aclarke said 347 days ago
Hi Lisa!
Glad you stopped by... as always! Hopefully this will be the start of a new trend. You know, maybe a new song every six months or so.

Seriously though, I have other plans to take the original track in a different direction, thus a different song. With vocals and everything.

Great to hear...
... something new from you, Adam! Back in full strength. Nice additions by the ZeteMan! It does sound great LOUD!!!

aclarke said 345 days ago
With hope
that this will help get me back on the old creative track! Thanks, Al!

Dave

aclarke said 346 days ago
Thanks, Dave
But don't give me too much credit... I made Ziti to do all the hard work! Glad you liked and I promise to keep rockin'!

Karmatoburn said 347 days ago
just that good
kicking some serious fun here. Very clean sounding. Crunchy is what comes to mind.

timothy devine said 347 days ago
I agree...turn it up
funny you worked w/o using an amp and such cause this sounds best thru my old wooden Criterion speakers. They must be 30 something yrs old.
Great collab. Love all the rhythm guitar and the lead stuff is cookin.

sometimes i think the tunes that come out the fastest are the best ones.
(My 'ice tunnel' was three days from start to finnish/not a collab though)
love it

ziti said 346 days ago
wow
lookit all the nice comments!!

I have been buried with work, and buried in band recordings, as I want to have a CD ready for the March 7th show.....it was late saturday night when adam sent me a thing to listen too. It was some simple rock, but Adam's energy was all over it and it was just the diversion the dr ordered.
I did a single take for the bass and a couple of takes on the guitar keeping the third take....and i sent it back to him. This took maybe 15 minutes?....but it was just the nicest jolt for me. I have always thought that those arena guitar players had it easy....ya just need a lot of stamina to stand in those funny positions for long periods, but the actual playing part is fairly easy. Turn a big amp all the way up and rip!
but i digress...

I never really play this way live, but with the band now officially a 3 piece, I am going to start rocking out a bit more. The local blues and jazz nazis will of course howl in protest...but expression is expression and i dont care anymore....i just wanna play. They been howling at me for years anyway.

thanks to adam for the remarkable friendship we have nurtured over the internet, thru macjams and ichat...we actually spent most of the baseball playoffs cheering together for the sox over ichat....how cool is that? Adam is a all american red blooded man. He works his ass off, and loves his family above all things. he has withstood some remarkably difficult blows with total courage and grace. he has come out the other side to be a warm and positive man....and i am very happy to know him.

Do play this loud!

aclarke said 345 days ago
Fran
Your guitar playing ability is surpassed only by your generosity. Thanks again for bringing this to the next level.

Scott Carmichael said 346 days ago
killer sound Adam
Excellent... killer all the way around... the hot rod deluxe is my amp of choice also... sweet... we musical collaborators must confess... using Fran is like Bonds using steroids... there's a performance inhancer!!!

sweet Z.... I think Bill said it... you are nimble and full on ... both at the same time

aclarke said 345 days ago
Thank you, Scott
I've only had the amp for a couple of months and so far I love it! This was really the first time I tried recording it.

This is the second time I've had the privilege of collaborating with Fran and the second time he has taken my simple little song further than I could have dreamed. That's very cool!

stevec said 346 days ago
straight up rockin!
Man, I'm gonna need some new headphones - think I blew the cones out on these. :)

Awesome work, never would have believed you put it together so fast.

aclarke said 345 days ago
I'll say this
We didn't waste any time nit picking at anything. I sent my track to Zetes and he basically sent back the finished product.

Sorry about the cones- send me the bill :)

SHOWCASE
Simple Is Best.
Less Is More.
Rock and Roll!

It's a Natural. Fran is at the Top of The Game, here. That was a good phone call to make. What an endorsement for PRS and Line 6 - fabulously done.

Don't know how you get a Hot Rod Deluxe straight into a mac, but it sounds great. A fine idea, Mr Clarke, straight through to multiple playbacks!
appreciation and best regards,
-rtc

aclarke said 345 days ago
Hey Coop
Glad you approve! My amp has a pre-amp outlet. I ran a patch cord from that to a Monster® iStudioLink cable to the Powerbook and unplugged the cable from the external speaker jack. Cranked the volume on the amp up and went for it!

No effects used between the guitar and computer... just a touch of reverb after the fact.

You've been telling me for a couple of years to get a tube amp. I did and I have no regrets about it. Now if I could only find an old Silvertone amp-in-case with the tremolo....

guitapick said 345 days ago
Solid...
...as a rock, as they say...

Rock 'n Roll's here to stay so long as it gets into your capable hands, guys!

Thanks for the download...

Top stuff Adam!
More evidence that it's possible to rock it out in GB/Logic/whatyouwill, and many miles from band members :)

That Fran can play can't he?!

Like it!!

Neil

aclarke said 344 days ago
No question
The boy can play!

Gotta love the ability to collaborate across the planet, though there is only about 75 miles between the Dagostino mansion and the Clarke homestead.

Thanks, Neil!

No time like the present
love the immediacy of this - you can feel it. I just got Line 6 toneport and realized I'm gonna be spending a lot more time in my phones. Great collab.

This is a great rocking track
The beauty of it is that it sounds like you guys are in the same room playing together - it has that organic, live feel. Nicely played, and full of boogie! Keep 'em coming! Nicely done. Peace.

I'm really glad I did. Everything about this is excellent! I love the energy!
Sometimes the one's that happen fast capture all the excitement. Great mix also.....very well done ac. I'll be waiting for the next one.

Rocking!
Wow.. this one is really smoking! This is pure rock and roll with raw energy. I am in awe of the awesome electricity the musical magic that you were able to create in such a short time. Sometimes when you feel so inspired things just fall into place without really trying and you create one of the best pieces that other guys would have taken days or weeks to even concieve, not to mention put into record. You and Ziti have skills in your fingers, acumen in your ears and just plain magic creating wonders in that music center of your brain.

moorlandt said 341 days ago
ooh yeah!
great drive with those fat drums and splendid work on the guitars. Very pulsing beat... sweet fun!

Whoa!
Way to throw it down, gents!

My ol' Dad used to spend weeks or months getting all scientific about his current painting and and the result would be 'interesting' but sometimes he'd slap one together in an hour. He'd call it trash but the ones he did like that were more often than not vastly better than the stuff he tried to devise. Take what you will from Today's Philosophical Tidbit!

Congrats!!

Godchaser said 341 days ago

Thanks

Well kiss my grits...
You know, Adam, I really don't have a good reason for not having stopped by to listen to your music before now. I'm gonna chalk it up to lameness while doing myself the favor of, rectifying my lack of support for you. As I can hear, it's been my loss and truly, it would have ended up being, support for me.

I like this!

I'm listening to this not really knowing which is you or, which is Fran on guitar. (I'm assuming that, "Ruby" is a guitar) However, I can at least say that, all of the g'tar playing is simply, tearing up rockn' groove line. Yep, the bass it good. Yep, you done an excellent job at filing those drum loops in the perfect supportive manner. But regardless of which of you is stretchn' the crap outta dose der skinny strings, all I can hear is what I would have wanted to hear and that is, space robbing, ear ripn' soul scraping, head bobn' and, frantic foot freeing tunage.

Excellent, excellent job at syncing w/ what was supposed to be.

I'm high five 'n ya! Thanks to both of you for putn' this out.

Dion

aclarke said 280 days ago
Well hello...
Dion- thanks for stopping by! Life sometimes gets in the way of us doing the things we'd rather be doing... so no, definitely no lameness on your part!

This was the about the easiest song I've ever worked on... I played my guitar to that drum loop (was going to work on some fills, etc- but things moved way too fast!)... asked Ziti for his opinion via ichat... he said "I can do something on this"... 10 minutes later he comes back with bass, lead guitar (ruby) and a hot sounding mix. (I soooo wish I could do that).

Anyway, short story long... I played the main rhythm groove and picked the drum loop... Fran did the rest. (I like to think I gave him good material to work with though).

Thanks again! I hope you are well!
