Song Description

on sudden realization of lossage
Lyrics We Lost Touch

give us a clue
show us something that we know is true

give us a sign
grant us peace of mind

bring us a son
give us something that we know is gonna
make us know love all the time

---

we lost touch
with our dreams
with our future
with our humanity

we lost touch
with our son
with our daughter
with our humanity

we lost touch
with our love
with our passion
with our humanity

we lost touch
with our gods
with our demons
with our humanity

---

give us a clue

now this is totaly impressive ..its mix between
couple asian and ol western fusion ..merge with
ambient and world music ..now this is cool my
friend ..great lyrics !!

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago

there's a little bit of everything in here. for example i added that church organ to emphasize the love and passion line.

thanks

Smokey -
you've really made something special here. Your voice sounds great and the arrangement is wonderful ( dig the key modulation). The message is all too true I'm afraid. Excellent track.

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago
.
you called it bud. this struck a chord with a lot of people.

the vocals have a funny backstory. i was still recovering from an awful cold, and i was trying to sing here at the high end of my range. i recorded a large number of takes in hopes of capturing a few usable ones. but my voice was cracking all the time, and it had a really tenuous weak feel... i ended up mixing all the takes and adding a ton of reverb to smooth it over. that 'weak' tonality comes through anyway, and it worked nicely for the sentiments in the lyrics...

thanks

Nice!
Well done Bill. I agree with Feter re the Western and Asian fusion. Beautiful!

Oh, and I love the pic of Fred and Ethel Mertz! Ha ha...

Be well friend!

SmokeyVW said 316 days ago
.
funny. i hadn't even considered fusion here - but it is apropos.

that pic, by the way, is of Hugh and his wife.

thanks!

Poignant Bill
lovely sound, soft and round, longing and slightly sad.

Nice change half way through.

Thanks

Dick

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago

i had decided a while ago to not overuse half-step up modulation. it works, but it seems a cheat. on a previous song someone asked me about key changes, which i would not have considered using in that song anyway, but the idea stayed in my mind and popped out here while i was arranging this. i ended up using two step ups here!

thanks

Dj French Toast said 316 days ago

I've listened to this a few times now
i have to say this has to be my personal favorite of yours. very deep and complete.

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago
.
i'm always honored to hear someone mentioning multiple listens: that's a sign of actual success to me. thanks Vic

announcer said 316 days ago
Here is what I especially like about this
the vocal treatment that gives it a surreal feel,
the bass line and its bit of a growl,
the key change,
the melody in the first bridge,
the lyrics,
the whole mix.

this is the best song posted so far this year on MacJams.

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago
.
as i described in an earlier reply, the vocal treatment is actually a giant cover up! funny how things work out sometimes

(and, that's quite a list there)

thanks - your comment means a lot

i am entering this tune into a contest - wish me luck!

dajama said 316 days ago
This is great
A really different, unique sound. The sounds are perfect for the melancholy, thoughtful sentiment of the song, and the production is great - reminds me in a way of Peter Gabriel. Your vocal is excellent - you express the sentiment beautifully. I love the touches of guitar. Very nicely done. Wow, this is impressive! Kudos. Peace.

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago
.
listening to this song now, while replying to comments, has made me realize how SAD this song is. i had not thought it through when i made it. i really admire PG's songwriting and production skills - maybe that what you are hearing here. read my previous about the vocals - you'll laugh! i added the guitars here and there to give support to the vocals, and at the end the guitar adds a one octave down harmony on the final choir part.

thanks

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago
.
postscript: maybe it's that bass line with the conga drums that is inspired by PG

michael2 said 316 days ago
great song
you are so full of gems, and you have the technical skills to give them all the treatment they deserve. this is a really strange song, I can't compare it to anything. take that as the huge compliment i meant it to be. great job Smokey.

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago
.
"really strange song" - YES! success. although i don't always stay away from more tried-and-true styles, i really prefer to explore new stuff that, as far as i know, no one has ever done before. like that Talking Heads song: "Say something once, why say it again?" my byline on another music site is "experiment before it's too late" - i really do believe that.

thanks for your encouragement.

lengold said 315 days ago

lovely
how uniquely good! love your wistful message and its poignant melody. the music seems unlabelable - and works a treat for your lyric. cool climbs in the key - wish i would remember neat tricks like that. ooo - those low manly "oooh"s at the end were slick. bravo, bill - it's beautiful.

SmokeyVW said 303 days ago

i ended up choosing Other for the genre for exactly that reason.

the key shifts are a nice device to ratchet up the urgency in a song - i generally try to avoid overusing that effect, but it really needed to be used here!

LOL - those ooohs are a chanting monk synth from the Voices JamPack.

thank you very much

lavalamp said 315 days ago
Original
Kind of an Asian feel. This is super because it's so original. And that's what this is about. The right to experiment and have fun.
Bravo!

you bet! i love experimenting with music. the possibilities are endless.

thanks

I dont know why
This has the quality of a prayer. almost religouse, Bravo excellently executed.

SmokeyVW said 301 days ago
.
there are some hints at religion, like signs and sons, and love and passion (depending on what meaning you assign to these words). there is also plain humanistic or pagan themes too.

mostly it's a plea. although the first two lines could be taken as a challenge as well.

thanks

Well I see
you got off that smiley face, cold medicine, crackhead kick and back to more serious matters. Strong message here stated simply and wrapped in a captivating musical blanket.

Excellent

SmokeyVW said 301 days ago
.
yup, this one is much more serious. the trick is to keep it all in balance somehow. wish i knew how...

thanks

Needs to be heard...
...straight 10s...

...not "uplifting"...but needs to be heard...high art, Bill...

SmokeyVW said 301 days ago
.
i appreciate your enthusiasm. but i also rather doubt this merits 10's.

there was some big discussion recently in the forums on this endless debate on ratings... i've sort of burned out on the topic though.

for a while last year i had disabled voting on all my tunes, but Tobin talked me out of it.

i more so enjoyed being up there on the Fan Picks - i hope it let some people find (and hopefully enjoy) my tune that otherwise they might have missed. but i also know my style is not to everyone's liking. and that is OK.

this being a big election year, i think my impressions on some of the undertow in our national morale might appear in various songs over the next few months. i know i'm not uplifted by the current state of affairs. and i feel i am not alone.

thank you

sammy said 313 days ago
This is so
religious. I agree with ego bandit. It is like a desperate prayer.

i like to do things in a way that allows the reader to read their own meanings into the words.

thanks

Enjoy this kinda oriental feel here
Like the choir effect, and that mixed with the oriental, makes for a nice listen. Like the modulation !

Interesting, great to hear words about losing touch, kinda puts the importants of not shutting out reality that is important to us.

This tunes seems to really gather steam and to quite an emotional listen.
With a nice pop flavor! Almost like. Now towards the end I am hearing an indian feeling in the music.

WAy to go!

SmokeyVW said 292 days ago

the Voices JamPack has lots of nice vocal synths in it. it has been fun experimenting with those.

maybe it's just me, but it seems like many people are so unhappy with the state of affairs these days that they are shutting it all out. it's scary times we are in nowadays. let's hope it turns around.

i tend to do slow build-up songs - this one is no exception i suppose.

thank you very much

jiguma said 313 days ago
One of ...
... the more original pieces I've seen here Bill.

Lyrics are powerful, thought-provoking, real.

And there's even a keychange ;)

Congratulations,

Little prayer
This is wonderful Bill, like a little prayer from a race thats lost their way. Your voice, and the treatments on it, are great - the end section is particularly strong. i love manatees, so the picture really gets me... another species we're casually wiping off the planet.

Thank you, Bill,
I agree with your sentiments here. I enjoyed the Indian sound, the kind of music that I imagine harem dancers would dance to and the vocals were sweet and tremulous even though there were a lot of you. Unique and fascinating piece. Thanks.
