Keywords i was in a noisey mood today (1)fuzz-pop (4)ring modulation is way cooler than modulating the chorus up a step 3/4's of the way through the song (1)
Description This is a song about how there is a greater good watching over us. Definitely a pop song, but I was experimenting with guitar noise on this one, so it's pretty noisy and fuzzy. There are 3 electric guitar tracks (one is just cut and paste that I applied a ring modulator to briefly in the verses), and i tuned all of the strings on the guitar to a B note (that's right, all six strings tuned to B). i used to use this tuning a lot when i played in a band. some might find it grating at times, but I love the sound it makes. all of the overtones clash fiercely.

picture the Flaming Lips a million years ago.
Lyrics bop bodda bah...

today, i'm so damn lazy
i'm so unhappy
but i can change that
cuz they are watching over
they make me happy
they make me change my mind

bop bodda bop...

they are happy with us
they have the answers
to all my problems
i, i can feel them
watching over
watching over

(chorus)
a time to change
a time to learn
a time to change
somehow
a time to change
a time to learn
a time to change
somehow

(synth solo)

(bridge)
they're watching
they're watching over
they're watching
they're watching over
they're watching
they're watching over
they're watching
they're watching over

(chorus)
a time to change
a time to learn
a time to change
somehow
a time to change
a time to learn
a time to change
somehow

Flaming Lips
I see it. YOu always have a way with a great melody Great lyrics just great. I like the B tuning gives the guitar a nice drone I think. Greatness!!!

michael2 said 398 days ago
hey thanks
for checking this out. this guy i knew in an industrial band (Distorted Pony) passed that one note tuning idea onto me. thanks for the kind words.

Good stuff

didn't think of it that way, but I can see it. it would need a little bit of piano. thanks for listening.

glad you liked this one. the guitar is really noisy, but i was just in that kind of mood today. thanks for checking her out.

You don't know how much I needed this
tonight - many thanks. Very emotional day that led me down a dark hole. I feel so much better now. This sounds great - all of it. Bop bodda bop indeed!

bud said 398 days ago
Dang!
Gone and done it again - keep forgetting who I am.

michael2 said 398 days ago
thanks Bud
i hear you had a row with your daughter. sucks, but you know she'll always be daddies little girl. glad you liked my song. much fun to play the guitar parts.

remix?
Sounds familiarly beautiful. extra guitar and vox?

michael2 said 398 days ago
mark
actually it's all new. the version that you heard had the casio beat playing the same thing all the way through. it wasn't MIDI, so i just sat down and re-recorded the whole thing. there's more guitars on the other version and no keys, i just made the guitars loud on this one. glad you remembered it though.

arachnidzone said 398 days ago
WOW
This is great, pop? rock? POP-ROCK!!! YAY!

michael2 said 398 days ago
thanks
glad you liked. chorus could probably be a little better; i almost threw it away because i thought the chorus was too boneheaded, but i really liked the music. thanks so much for listening.

Vic Holman said 398 days ago
ohh!
now that is a cool guitar sound!

I've been playing around with a ring modulator, and so I'm really interested in textures and harmonically clashes at the moment.

The song as a whole is great!! Very upbeat flair to it. Flaming Lips have nothing on this.

michael2 said 398 days ago
thanks Vic
the ring modulator is obvious mostly in the 2nd round of verses and just sounds like pingy noise, all the rest of the overtone stuff is from all the strings playing the same note and not quite being in tune together (and the metal slide exaggerates it i think). so glad you liked it.

echoroom said 398 days ago
F**kin' excellent
Really - one of the best things you've posted - this starts and doesn't stop... wonderful squalling guitars with lovely harmonies the bop bada ba is wonderfully catchy... makes me wanna stick my head in the speakers with joy.

10's from me... i wanna have a whole album with this , Michael.

steve

michael2 said 397 days ago
thanks Steve
the guitars are the best part of this for me (at least the part that I had the most fun with). thanks a bunch for listening.

Reinholt56 said 398 days ago
Hi Michael...
For me this song is very refreshing. It's daring and yet similar enough for me to appreciate it, not having to move into the abstract realm.

The B's is a new one on me and makes the song stronger.

I think many more new and innovative songs, tunes, etc., are the requirement for 2008, and I for one am ready for others to rock, etc., the socks off of MJ's.

Let's make 2008 the birth of the new, to set the Internet sonically ablaze with auditory innovation.

Take care.

Paul

michael2 said 397 days ago
thanks Paul
glad you liked. even though this is straight pop, i view it as an experiment, and you're right: we all need to just keep stretching out.

The man that...
never sleeps! Great pop rock song.As perusual wonderful guitar tones, vocal work, lyrics, song crafting and melodies.Much enjoyed and love the pic you used for this post.Change can be ............

Blessings and Happy Holidays,

michael2 said 397 days ago
thanks Godchaser
glad you liked this one. i'm still not sure about that chorus, but once you start singing something it's hard to erase it from your mind and start from scratch. thanks a bunch for listening.

davisamerica said 397 days ago
right then michael
you just don't quit..wow this is excellant and love the pix. guitar work killer. lyrics and vox great...just one thing tho brother i don't care much for i why can't i write like this!

michael2 said 397 days ago
thanks
for the kind words. your closing statement is nonsense though. you write great songs; if you want them to sound like this: layer slightly out of tune noise over the top. end result is "cacophony of sound." thanks for listening.

davisamerica said 397 days ago
right then
will try that..lol

Ibstrat said 397 days ago
Wow
You tuned all of the strings to B!Brilliant.I really enjoyed this song.Very realistic band feel.Excellent!

michael2 said 397 days ago
hey thanks
for listening. glad you thought it sounded like a "band," always trying to get a live sound (which is getting harder as I burn through my collection of drum loops and fills). i think that tuning is really fun (although worthless for pretty much everything). thanks for stopping by.

said 397 days ago
the first not got me...
and the vocals sold me... excellent.

What a retro... now trip of music. I love subtle vocals repeats.

Guitar riffing is absolutely essentially cool.

That's all...

... but those vocals... oooooo, yes.

D

michael2 said 397 days ago
thanks so much
for giving this a chance. really glad that you liked it, especially the vox (my personal area of insecurity). thanks for coming by.

said 397 days ago
meant to say...
the first note! got me.... start to finish a cool song.

dajama said 397 days ago
I love this
truly an outstanding song. Your vocal is great - as ever, and the guitar sounds refreshing and different. Glad you explained the tuning - otherwise I'd have sat here for hours trying to figure out how the hell you made that sound. Very cool. This put a smile on my face. Very nice. Peace.

rsorensen said 397 days ago
Very cool song...
Love the fuzz! I love the juxtapose of the (kinda dark to me) lyrics with the poppy music. Nice job!

lengold said 397 days ago
A truly
innovative sounding song Michael that grabs you from the start to finish - very enjoyable. Fantastic.
Cheers
Len

Karmatoburn said 396 days ago
make me happy
radio ready, with a nice edge on the guitars. i'm not familiar with what the special tuning does, but it all sounds great to me. i esp like the synth work. vocals are stellar as always. such a delightful pop sensibility.
i wish i could do this

spitlogic said 396 days ago
Interesting structure
Popish indeed. I like the way the melody plays out and the experimentation with the guitar doesn't quite fit the pop genre to me, but it works here.

Doadars Uncle said 394 days ago
Frip and Eno!
I really like it!

Very nostalgic. Your guitar is sweet!

Doug

michael2 said 394 days ago
thanks for
listening Doadars Uncle. glad you liked this one, the guitar was the easy part; i had some problems mixing the vocals (trying to get a sound where they settled into the mix). thanks for checking this out.

Brian D said 394 days ago
cool
cool tuning. i read that Steve Stills did something similiar with Suite Judy Blue Eyes (all D's me thinks) it reminds me of She Don't Use Jelly on the guitar riff.I like the noise and you rein it in well. great melody. you're a tunesmith, for sure.

cheers!

michael2 said 394 days ago
thanks for
listening. yeah, it's kind of obvious that that guy Ronald from the Flaming Lips has been a HUUUge influence. whatever happened to that guy?

I've been
playing truant. This must be one of my favourites of yours. I like the rumbling bass, and the B guitar, obviously. I'll have to try the tuning.

Trying to catch up
Sorry I haven't been here for a while and Happy New Year.
Sounded a little like "Heroes" (Bowie) at the start, but then turn into a Pixies B-side song (Which is a compliment) Nice thumping bass, too.
Hey who's watching over me?

Dave

michael2 said 370 days ago
hey Lavalamp
good to see you back. thanks for stopping back. you know, I love both of those bands, so I will take that as a compliment. thanks for stopping by.

er...where the FUCK have I been??
This is GREAT! Flaming Lips for sure, and undeniably Warm Jets. I dig that tuning, too; and think I need to spend some time catching up on things in your neighborhood here......

Respectfully,

michael2 said 359 days ago
thanks Sonny Jim
glad you like. I actually heard this on my Ipod today and wished it sounded a little better, but most of the time I can hardly be bothered with recording technique (i like to write). thanks for listening.
