Vocals/ Guitar + Sitar/Production: Racerat (Mr. PVD)

I wrote this on a trip to Sri Lanka. We landed at the Maldives, and I thought what it would be like to just get out of the plane and disappear, leave EVERYTHING behind ... nobody would know where I'd gone.

It had been a looong flight.

Thanks to Philip for his great work on this (he fully produced and mixed this baby) and Andy for the sinuous basslines.

Due to ongoing wrist problems, I probably wont reply to comments, so apologies in advance (thanks to Rachel for typing this!). I think this lyric is actually pretty straight forward for me (I had gucci trainers on at the time).
Lyrics Plastic knives in the business aisles
From the air everything is shrinking.
Cut the ties in a second life
Let the stop-off be my destination.
Walk away and I'm MIA
Walk away and you declare me missing
Walk away and I'm shredding my name
Sloughed off like a Gucci snakeskin.

No trace in the empty seat, my deletion is complete.

A single white boy in the crowd but
In the air you're the prince of strangers.
Cool and humid in a cigar tube
Thought and temperature regulated.
Walk away and I'm MIA
Walk away and you can keep on sleeping
Walk away from the bed that I made
A rear view of the mess I'm leaving

No trace in the empty seat, my deletion is complete.

Day by Day
A living secret
Flame by Flame
I burn to keep it.

Oh child you were abandoned by
A cold heart and a painted smile
Oh child you were abandoned by faith ...

No books no coffee shops no
No cars no speak the language
No me no identity
Another rat sleeping in the garbage

don't we al have days like that. just walk away. until it gets cold outside then we think otherwise.

sorry that the wrist problem still persists. sounds like...arg surgery

excellent work by all.

said 404 days ago
With all of
the traveling I do, I really feel a connection with this one! Man, I can't tell you how many times I felt that way. I really enjoyed the whole "cigar tube" and other flying references as well. Outstanding track guys!

p.s. I'd really like a copy of this one, but no D/L'd button.

Day by Day
This is great... echoroom, really nice vocals, and quite diverse this time. The 'confidential' sounding vox remind me of Peter Gabriel from "Lay Your Hands on Me". The production is great, and really good dramatic music... excellent work, guys.

biba_nova said 404 days ago
I agree with perpetual vortex
This could be your peter gabriel lost song

Hope your wrists get better...these computer thingies have got a lot to answer for

Steve, Steve, Steve,
please ask Rachel to edit and enable the download.

This is superb - what a fantastic song - you just get better and better.

The musicianship and production is top notch too - the drums/bass really drive it and the guitars sound great.

Love this.
Cheers
Len

ooops
Sorry, download now enabled.
Nice to have a comparison other than Bowie for a change!

Actually, the drums on this were inspired by Perceptual Vortex's work on a recent collab ... I'm still in awe of them!

Hot damn!
Good to have you back man! Smokin collab!

Love the concept. I too have pondered such things from time to time.

Excellent arrangement and stellar production. Love the change ups and turn arounds.

I could listen to you sing all day long Steve.

Be well friends!

bud said 404 days ago
Steve - this so well realized
and well written. The concept and lyrics are really insightful. Love the Gucci snakeskin line. Also like All the music here - great bass and inspired use of sitar. Philip is hot these days. Excellent collab.

racerat said 402 days ago
what?
"these days"????

What about all those other days????

Bud, I like to think I'm ALWAYS hot.

and don't you forget it....;-)

Very resonant
Not only do I have days like this, but I just had one last week! This is impressive - great production, and an outstanding vocal (reminds of the singer from Mansun I think they were called) which nicely complements the very well-written lyrics. I love the restraint on the vocal, especially on the verse. It gives the chorus great impact. Lovely playing throughout. I like the sitar-sound at the end, whatever it is! Very cool. Sorry to hear you're having health issues. Hope things get better. Nice work, again. Peace.

Ejh said 404 days ago
Another MacJams supergroup...
Terrific lyrics and a terrific vocal delivering them...

I'm really loving the drums on this, that go from intelligent accents to knowing when to lay back into simplicity...

And then are perfectly locked with the bass... Drew continues to be one of the MacJams site secret weapons...

The tracks you folks are turning out these days are perfect examples of songs where the arrangement and the mix really work together... Every sound is where it is with a purpose... Much going on, but the whole comes across as simple and focused, as one thing...

it's good to see you back. A great track from you all - I like the Sitar - and you sound less like Bowie... Sorry to hear the wrist problem persists.

Thank for sharing

Hope the hand improves soon Steve.

This song was actually built around a riff in Bad Boys 2.... I may owe thanks to Michael Bay!

Surprise
Pleasant surprise. The chant/spoken vocal still makes great use of your voice. The guitar and bass are sharp and original, this is the beauty of these collabs, the whole is better than the parts (which all sound good to me)

Thanks Guys

I love this Steve.

The arrangement is exceptional as are the lyrics and the playing and singing.

Almost too much to take in.

Yowzah...
Big epic sound that whispers softly in your ear. The persuation is very compelling... with the thumping drive pushing the notion: just walk. Just walk out the door. Just... walk... away. Hmmmm....

The sound is lush and hot, like a city burning up in a humid haze, too many people buzzing in too many languages, and the voice is like the eye in the hurricane. Perfect balance, flawless tune hitting like a fighter.

Another gem - big cheers to you, Racerat and Drew Kopr. Sorry it took so long to get here, but work work workworkwork.... you know.

So, take care of those wrists, Steve. Do what you gotta do, and I hope they turn out okay.

damiengh said 401 days ago
Got it going man
Love the little touches here with that sitar, but overall, just like how this thing is put together.

It really keeps one's interest by the way you constantly add variety along the way with your different sections and layers of complexity all kept together with that driving beat.

This is just soooooooooo good.

Okay
An exclamation point, that's a terrible comment, but there's no way to single out elements here, when everything is so amazing. This is one of those songs that I hear here and get very frustrated by the limited audience size available. I'm glad you're being heard, but wish so much that you were all able to play on a bigger stage, it's so good.

craft said 401 days ago

thank God for long plane flights. this is sooo cool. its got an edgy alt vibe and the backing vox, horns and production just sort of put it in the stratosphere. the sitars? sound great and your vocals are excellent.
well done crew

Or real drummer on electronic kit ? These days it's hard to tell.

Thanks D - the no dl was a mistake - i wasn't being precious! This was a really simple tune, given some oomph by Drews bass and a kick in the nuts by Phils guitar and wonderful production ... I also think his vox MAKE the chorus. Ta

help I can't see
This is so blindingly good, incredibly diverse, vapours of The The's Matt Johnson.
'No trace in the empty seat, my deletion is complete' what a great line, deserves to be all by itself. And the Gucci snakeskin' jesus !!
Beautiful transitions, yeah as others said the bowie vox is all but squeezed out,or is that racerat ? though the backing vocals have the lodger/scary monsters vibe which is brilliant, I love it. The production values are top drawer very much. I picked up logic myself a few months ago on ebay but I'm finding the learning curve hell, any links to 'Logic for Dummies' a think a greater clarity of sound can be achieved than with using Garageband, which I feel lacks edge. And man I just have to get the full edition of Addictive Drums. The percussion sounds so punchy here.
Of course all the equipment/software in the world does not make a great song, it take a great songwriter, and that I must say you very much are. One of your best.

Wow gucci trainers !! I don't know what to say now.

Add drums are ace - my favourite bit of software.

Like the The The comparison - ta!

Perfer me prada trainers, but i was slumming it ...

Yeah it's good.
Good to hear a new song from you Steve. Great tune and production. I agree with the Matt Johnson comparison (it could be off Infected and a Lost Songs entry!). Great production job as always from Philip. You've got a good team going there. Quality.

Powerful images
But not only that, there's one hell of a tune going on here!

Great work guys; Steve, the talking parts were a surprise, so the singing came like at a point I didn't expect, but hoped that you would sing at some point - so not disappointed when it did happen.

I think after all the comparisons are made that you sound like Steve of Echoroom fame. If Bowie, Brett Anderson, Matt Johnson et al were each to sing ths, then yours would be the definitive version....

Production is immense. Great addition to your stable.

Jim

Steve, I missed your music very much!

What an amazing collab, everybody--I don't even know what all is in there, but I know it all sounds good together. it's one of those songs that take you away.

I love that break with the great big drums and sitar? drop-to-the-floor good. Every bit of the song. oh and that repeating, high string sound, so urgent.

My Deletion Is Complete
Well, if they release Mission Impossible 4, they'd be stupid to use any other song than this. This has that really cool Secret Agent kinda vibe for the majority of the song. Might be that bass line. A really nice rap coming from you, MC Echoroom in da house.

Plastic knives in the business aisles... Gucci snake skin.... Prince of Strangers.... this is loaded with strong visuals as usual. "Flame by flame, I burn to keep it" Great writing Steve. You tell really great stories. Have you ever just written for the sake of writing? (Here's where you tell me that you are a famous writer).

Great variety of well performed instruments. You guys are rock stars.
