Description My Mom had lots of records when I was growing up.She is a big jazz piano fan.I used to lie on the floor in front of the stereo listening to Oscar Peterson,Jelly Roll Morton,Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller.Later on when I heard Led Zeppelin I completely rejected all that stuff as being "too old".Of course I now love all the old jazz stuff.(I still like Led Zeppelin-my Mom doesn't)This solo guitar piece is kind of a feeble attempt to play like Fats Waller.

Right in Stride
Nice job, Mark.

Trying to play this style on the keys is hard enough (perhaps impossible for me), but pulling it off on guitar is even more impressive. ;)

Thanks
a lot for your input.I enjoy messing around with stuff like this.I'm glad other people like it!

gail60 said 407 days ago
Nice!
Oh to be a fly on the wall at your house and listen to all your great music! You are very gifted. Wonderful job Mark! Hug your mother. She raised a very talented son.

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
I'm glad
you like it.Your comments mean a lot.

jiguma said 407 days ago
Always enjoy ...
... your playing Mark, and this is no exception. Full of admiration for "proper guitarists" like yourself. Still some glitchy sounds in the recording, but what a performance!
As Fran would say (and probably will on this) "deepest bow"!
Neil

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
Most of
my favorite guitarists are not "proper" (schooled) guitarists.Sometimes I think it's better not to know too much-just use your imagination.I'm a fan of your playing for sure...you always seem to come up with interesting chords and progressions.I think most of the glitches you are hearing is me making mistakes!

jiguma said 406 days ago
:)
Didn't notice anything I'd call a mistake Mark - just a little buzz/hum stuff in the distant background.

Feter said 407 days ago
Waller Rag
man this piece is just so magical , I just loved
the way you picked ,and the ol timy jazz sound
Incredible my friend ..!

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
Feter
Thanks for your support.I really appreciate it!

Doug Somers said 407 days ago
You capture the light touch of the
left/right hand interplay of this piano style rather magically. A bit of a Les Paul feel in some parts too. Fully enjoyed this one Mark.

Take care,
Doug

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
I honestly
have not listened to much Les Paul- I have an album that he did with Chet Atkins.I should go back and listen to his old stuff.
Thanks for checking out my song!

lengold said 407 days ago
It doesn't
get any better than this Mark.
Cheers
Len

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
Len
Great to hear from you as always.

bud said 407 days ago
If this is feeble - I'm comatose
wonderful track - loved it. Nice left hand - er - thumb.

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
Well I guess
I meant feeble compared to the actual Waller who played like he had 4 hands! Thanks for checking out my song.

futzpucker said 407 days ago
Another gem
Everything you bring to us here at MacJams is played with exceptional skill and heart. I love hearing your music. All of it goes directly to my iPod. Thank you for sharing your considerable talent with us.

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
I'd have to
say that I feel the same way about your music. Thanks for the kind words.

said 407 days ago
man!
your skill never cease to amaze me!!!
i would love to have this ability, and incororate into my music somehow...i would love to do the metal rag.....wait, that sounds kinda gross... i dont want to do that exactly, what i meant was..... well, i mean... uh.... just, ...never mind... your tunes are kick ass, dude!!

Ibstrat said 406 days ago
I'm pretty sure
that a ragtime-metal fusion has never been attempted. The only guy I can think of who plays heavy rock and ragtime is Jorma Kaukonen-but I never heard him do both in one song.(A possible song title could be "Blood Soaked Rag".)
Thanks for the encouragement- I'm really diggin' your music-metal done right!

Moviz said 407 days ago
You
never disappoint Mark and this is no exception. So 'clean' and precise... even the syncopated bits LOL, love it all, regards M

Ibstrat said 405 days ago
Thanks
for your positive feedback-much appreciated!

Ejh said 407 days ago
So I come home from work...
...and there's a new tune up from Mark...

...and IT"S ALREADY GOT THIRTEEN FANS!...And I just heard about it!...

Yeah, i guess the word is out, Mark...

Time for your award-winning 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer In Two Keys At Once'...

Followed by 'Jazz Odyssey'... I mean, you're on a roll, dude!...

Ed

Ibstrat said 405 days ago
Rudoph
Can't believe you remembered that Ed!I would post it but no covers allowed.Could I change the title to Rudolph the Blue-Nosed Reindeer?

Ejh said 404 days ago
Hmm...
Maybe if you call it 'a tribute to Rudolph' or 'political satire' or something...

Your version is a key cultural icon, and should not be lost...

Ed

said 407 days ago
Lovely!
I wish I could lay it down like you can, just graceful playing and nice choice of notes!, Cheers!

Ibstrat said 405 days ago
Glad you
had a chance to listen.Thanks!

sloparts said 407 days ago
Amazing what you can do with 6 strings
I'm in awe of you technical skills on a guitar, and in the feel you put into your music Mark. This is jazz guitar at it's best my friend. Thanks for the early Christmas present in sharing this one.

Be well and enjoy life's music.

Ed

Ibstrat said 405 days ago
Not sure
if it's really jazz-the only improv was a couple of places where I messed up and forgot what I planned to play. Thanks for your comments!

kristyjo said 407 days ago
Love it!
You have a fantastic combination of 'relaxed' and 'precise' that's just so musical. I love the bass lines coming through here. I'd be jealous, except this HAS to take you thousands of hours of practice to sound this good.

Great listening - it's a download.

Ibstrat said 404 days ago
Thanks
so much.Really glad that you liked it.!

guitapick said 407 days ago

A "feeble attempt", eh?

Hmmmm...

...I should be so feeble...I love Fats Waller...this does it quite nicely, Mark...

Little known fact: Fats was a big Zep fan, too...

Ibstrat said 404 days ago
And
vis-versa I have a great bootleg of Zeppelin playing "Honeysuckle Rose".

Vic Holman said 407 days ago
Smooooooth!
excellent as always.

now what about blending some old jazz style with led zepplin. Immigrant Rag or communication rag-down.

Nice stuff Mark.

Ibstrat said 404 days ago
Funny you
should mention that.I am working on a song right now called "Good Times Ragtimes" which is a ragtime tribute to Led Zeppelin.I'm hoping to eventually turn it into a Broadway musical and record it with either the Boston Symphony or with Yanni.

willnlf said 407 days ago
Wonderful
Rich, full, clean sound and great imagination. Heard a little Chet Atkins in the middle, but it's all one going back to the influences you mention. My first time listening to your music. I'll be back for more.

Ibstrat said 404 days ago
You are
correct. There is a riff in the middle ripped directly from Chet Atkins.Actually I ripped it from Steve Howe who ripped it from Chet Atkins Who ripped it from Merle Travis. Thanks for listening to the song!

craft said 407 days ago
lovely
I love it! Great guitar playing. Jazz is one of my favourite styles!! So I love this piece of yours..

Sweet
Cannot critique
When the sound is so sweet
Man, your playing is a treat
Your melodies are unique
Progressions sweep me off my feet
This song is so good I had to hit repeat
Fingerpicking style is quite a feat
So many good tunes you need a tune boutique
Play this on my Ipod as I walk NYC streets
Your talent makes me grit my teeth
Don't wanna sound like a creep
When you work in your studio, I wanna peak
How do you perfect those sounds what do you tweak
Thanks lbstrat, I think you're neat
Did I mention already that this tune is sweet?

Ibstrat said 404 days ago

Stride guitar?
I think you have the style down. Lots of stride, and occasional block chord melodies. Lovely piece.

Ibstrat said 404 days ago
I'm glad
you liked it.Thanks for your comment.

Godchaser said 404 days ago
What grace!
Such a nice touch. This reminds me a lot of my late father's style of playing, although he didnt have the gift like you posess it.Truely a beautiful piece of imagination.I appreciate your visiting my recent post as I might have never heard this.Very nice stuff and a instant fav!

Blessings,

for checking out my music, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Karmatoburn said 401 days ago
nice
really sweet tone, and fluid style. sounds like a single take? straight from your roots. i'd let my kids listen to all the Zep they wanted if they grew up to play this well

Ibstrat said 401 days ago
Yes
it was one take- I haven't quite figured out how to punch out mistakes!I so far have recorded everything straight thru. Thanks for your comments.Greatly appreciated.

Chief Thunder Bear said 399 days ago
Man..
Dude, I wish I could play more like you..I love playing rock stuff and doing all the quick little blues licks, but its THIS stuff that I really want to know. Its just so much more pleasing to the ear. I love your sound here, especially those little diminished sounding arpeggios in the middle. Keep up the good work, you have inspired me to expand my guitar playing.

Very Much Enjoyed,

Gabe

Ibstrat said 399 days ago
I Really
appreciate your comments.I teach a lot of teenagers-most wouldn't be caught dead saying that they like something like this.(I play lots of rock too,I just haven't posted any because I don't know how to lay down drum tracks)There are lots of things you can do on guitar besides power chords and two-handed tapping.(Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
