Description This started as a Native American Flute solo, but as I've listened to some 'modern' courting flute music, I noticed that there are several fusions and borrowings from Western popular music. I went ahead and tried a pop-style arrangement of the piece, and although it has some definite 'El Condor Pasa' leanings, I decided to post it, anyway. The melody came almost too easily, so if you recognize it as something else, please let me know.

Hardware The usual - PB4, Snowball, Roland, guitar, courting flute.

Just a...
...sweet song for a mournful flute. The more contemporary feeling of this works very well with guitar background. Sometimes I am feeling you're a little out of breath, so the pitch suffers just a tad here and there. I sure like this gentle tune and the calm it exudes. (I wonder what it would sound like with just flute as you did in the two earlier numbers with this flute.) It is so great to hear you experimenting with this sound and the genre. Very peaceful, musical, pleasant, satisfying.

Thanks for your listening ear. The flute is pitched differently than tempered tuning, so it's been a real bear to get to work with other instruments. I retuned my guitar so it would work, kind of, and then had to discard the bass line that I'd done on MIDI keyboard. No wonder the courting flute is a solo instrument! It reminds me of working with Egyptian musicians who played 'oriental' instruments AND western instruments, but would never dream of putting both of them together, because of the differing systems. (Violin was the exception to this dilemma.)

I have a single flute version of this, but it just sounds 'plain' to me now. I may post it sometime in the near future, though, and see how it does.

	nevertheless... ...this still sounds awfully nice. Thanks for the info about the tuning, though. I hadn't thought of that and, no doubt, it 's just more "characteristic" than anything else. It does pose a hurtle for western-turned instruments, but you are still doing some really great things with this. More than just clever— musical! Paul

Nice piece. I think all the tonal and pitch variations and slight inconsistencies add a human touch to a very personal and intimate song. If is was too clean (as a lot of music is getting in this digital age) I think it might lose it's charm. The only suggestion I might make is that the timing seems to lag in a couple places, so maybe try tracking to a metronome (does GB offer that?) and then take it out later. Otherwise, very moving. Thanks!

	nice and sweet flute, like the strumming as well. Like how the melody is very easy to catch on to. Has a real indian theme I think. Also, thanks for being such a great part of MJ. 	nice at first I was thinking "how does she get a software instrument to sound like that?" and now I see that it's real. makes it even cooler. i could definitely hear this in a soundtrack. i like the gtr backing as well, sounds great with that mournful flute.

and a perfect way to finish off the day. Excellent playing and very nice melody (completely original as far as I can tell! - although i know what you mean about the tune coming too easily. I'm always worried that I've just "written" Gimme Shelter or something...) This has a a mournful, but somehow optimistic feeling. I guess I always associate the flute with sad music (maybe because I'm irish!) but this has a definite sweetness. Very cool. Nice work. Peace.

The melody reminds me of an African-American spiritual. Not any one in particular, but it has that quality.

OK, yes -- it does remind me of some pop tune from the 70s -- what is it? I'll think of it.

It will come to me in the shower tomorrow morning. That's usually when I get my brainstorms.

I like the shaker. Nice touch to glue the track together.

Is that you on the real guitar? You've got some nice guitar chops.

Your flute playing is soulful and pleasing. I like the little 'fall' effects you sometimes put at the end of phrases.

OK, I think I know what it reminds me of now -- "Wayfaring Stranger." Yours is not a copy of that song, but when it goes into the major IV chord, with the melody note on 'La' (the tonic) -- that's when I get echoes of "Wayfaring Stranger."

A very beautiful track.

'El Condor Pasa' !! Very funny!
I have often wondered about the sheer mechanics of that group. I once had the singular experience of watching them perform under Grand Central Station while talking on the phone to a friend in Denver who was watching them perform in a bus shelter. How do they do that, anyway? Is there a Universidad del Condor Pasa in Ecuador that's cranking these guys out? I don't get it.
Anyway, as far as the song goes, it sounds very nice, very well played. For my money, the timing issues help nudge along the fiction that this is a band rehearsing, so not a problem here.

	Holds it's own I'm sure you've heard an Inca Gold CD? I have a few I enjoy - but in every different tune I find something unique. A lot of the tunes have a common ground in the instruments and sounds.... This one of yours is relaxing and very enjoyable - didn't sound like a song I've heard, albeit there are familiar sounds and scales.. . - Harold

	Really lovely I love this sort of music. It reminds me of being in south american and seeing the Mayan temples. This really is a beautiful recording. The expansive flute playing and the gentle pop-style accompaniment goes really well together. You should write more of this style of music. It is so lovely.

	Thanks for commenting. I usually use software instruments, for the flexibility in changing things around, and fixing up mistakes, but, you're right, a real instrument does have real advantages that software instruments can't even touch, when it comes to being able to express things. I'm glad you came to listen.

	Actually, There are some half figured out lyrics, which is where the title comes from. I am a person who celebrates Advent at this time of year, and that's sort of the direction this was, and maybe still is going. The unadorned melody is quite simple and memorable, so i agree, there should be words.

	Thanks I am really working on getting some of the Native American flute ideas in my fingers, so I can pick it up again for my own playing enjoyment at my leisure. This recording of the flute part was done when I had plenty of time to play and get comfortable with the fingerings. I appreciate your comments, as your musicianship and musical expression are quite excellent!
