Description I haven't written anything in months, so this is just an attempt to get going again.

This track uses a bass guitar, 4 bass recorders, and a bass viol, as well as my cajon. The piano and guitar are software.

Great track.
I really like this... it's very cool. You build up the groove really well, and your non-standard instrument choices create a wonderfully different soundscape. Very nice.

Only two suggestions i have are (1) consider a sparser approach to your bass viol line -- it enters with nice subtlety, but then kind of takes over -- and (2) it seems to me like it could be a lot longer!

I am curious about your cajon sound... is it processed in some way? The cajon that I am more used to from my flamenco days is a big wooden box that you sit on and slap with the hands (rather like the box in the picture above), but yours has a kind of techno quality.

Anyway, really good track, and I hope you will post more!

Cajon
Clark,

Thanks for commenting. I checked my Logic file, and the cajon has just a little EQ over it, plus the PSP VintageWarmer, which gives the sound a bit more grit.

I'll try doing a longer version of this. In fact, I was improvising for quite a while, but in a loop, and I used the best take. I should have just strung them all together....

I liked this piece. Jazzy and light. Really comfortable. Great job.

Nice
Smooth vibe. I like the sounds. The bass sounds very nice, and that's a terrific percussion sound. Have to admit I'd never heard of a cajon, but I'm very impressed by the sound. Nice work. Peace.

Cajon
David, as you may have seen in Clark's comment, a Cajon is a big box that you sit on, and you slap the front panel with your hands. Hit it in the middle and you get a boom, hit it higher up and you get a snare-like sound. It's originally a flamengo instrument, but you can use it for other genres too. My percussion teacher sometimes uses it as a substitute for a full drum kit if he plays in small clubs.

I agree
that this could be a lot longer. A lovely sound scape that really grooves. Lovely mellow sounding instruments. Very enjoyable and different.
Welcome Back.
Cheers

Great stuff
The bass viol is what stands out to me; I love the melodic journey it takes. And the cajon sounds great--the perfect percussive accompaniment for the rest of the music. Very enjoyable and original. Seems like it should be something besides "other", but I don't know what exactly.

Just enough to get my feet wet
but I wanna dive in and float down stream. Very intriguing arrangement. I like the instrument choices. Your cajon has a nice snare sound. What make and model is it? Or is it homemade?

VicDiesel said 411 days ago
That cajon
Hey Bud,
my cajon is a Meinl, bought at Guitar Center for about a 150 bucks. It's nothing special but it sounds good, and I enjoy jamming away on it. The sound here is slightly flattered by some processing (little bit EQ and compression), but it has a good snare sound as it is.

Slick tune
Almost has a Latin feel to it. Perfect accompaniment for sitting at the beach and listening to the waves, wind and gulls.

Enjoyable!

Viva El Cajon!
Nice slinky jazzy piece... fretless bass? Sweet bass violin meandering. The snare-like percussion (is that the cajon?) is a little loud and thin in the mix, I might back it off a bit. I always like your recorder work, they sound great here. And the photo is terribly distracting :-) The hair looks quite familiar...

Slinky
thanks for commenting, Eduard. The percussion is indeed the cajon (box drum). I'll give another listen to the balance.

The picture is just some stock photo. It's pure coincidence that it features several elements that are important in my life.

Oh, and yes, I have a fretless bass. A rather nice semi-acoustic Godin. I don't use it enough.

One of the surprises of this track to me was that the bass recorders did not come out sounding bass-y at all. In fact they are squarely mid range. Of course, a recorder only sounds low in the context of other recorders. It's actually a fairly high instrument.

This sounds great. Love the sounds and the groove, but damn, your just getting our tastebuds moistened. Sounds like the intro of big things to come.

Looking forward to more.

Good to get back in the game eh?

Different
Well, I can safely say this is the first MJ track I've heard which uses bass recorders. Not to mention bass viol.

I like the forward momentum this track creates. Sounds like good 'riding on a train' music.

Never heard of a cajon, but I just read your description of it. A very useful box! And it sounds great on this track.

From one bottom feeder to another....
Thanks for the kind words.

I get the art work for my tracks on a site called istockphoto. Dot com. Costs only a few bucks a picture, and it's good quality stuff.

Very cool....
I like this one a lot, but it ends to abruptly. My guess is you wanted to leave us wanting more.... it worked.
You music is truly refreshing. I like musicians who think outside the box and push the envelope. You certainly fit that category. I am a fan now.

VicDiesel said 249 days ago
Thanks man!
I write music to please myself, but I won't deny that I don't mind it if other people get a kick out of it too.

Btw, this track had to stay under 2 minutes since it was for a competition. I've been meaning to make a longer version.
