Description Here is another draft mix for my upcoming album RAIN BATHER. Adding organ to the ensemble and a more lively EQing. I think this will be track 3 or 4 on the recording. I like the balance on this one.

The ensemble:
Tobin Mueller - B3 organ
Chris Mueller (my nephew) - piano
Jeff Cox - acoustic bass
Dane Richeson - drums & percussion
Woody Mankowski - soprano saxophones
Tom Washatka - tenor saxophone
Ken Schaphorst - flugelhorn
Bob Levy - trumpet

Earlier version can be found here: I Wanna Fly (v1)

RAIN BATHER draft mixes on MJ:
Lightning Strikes
I Wanna Fly
Caught In The Current (feat. Bill Barner)
Finding No Path
Seven Buttons On A Nehru Jacket
Last Song On Vaudeville (feat. Bill Barner)

Pre-release CDs can be purchased here (includes more info on recording): RAIN BATHER.

Terrific
Lots of great sounds here. All in sync! Love that B3 sound, kinda reminds me of Jimmy Smith of yesteryear. This is really quite peppy and so full of zing! When I hear. Your B3 really is answering back with a lots of cool sass:)

This is the kinda stuff that can get addictive!

WAy to gO !

Thanks for sharing this Jazz Gem!

killer recording
as of late I've been listening to old Sinatra recordings... and marveling at how they sound... I'd expect them to be archaic in nature... instead they shine and stand with anything that's out there today... this has that vibe... an outstanding cast of player who can really make extraordinary music... I don't see how it could be any better than this...

knocked out

its hot ! its live ..just incredible !!
one of the most groovey B3 to enjoy at MJ
KUDOS!!!!

Moviz said 415 days ago
Very
'Big Band' sounding here, with the horns and all, standing alongside all the 'greats'. Good recording too with everything clear as a bell and in its place. Brilliant sound, regards M

Big band
Thanks. I added "big band" to my key words. Good idea. Sometimes the ensemble sounds like a large combo, sometimes a big band. I liked how it came across on this recording.

Bubowski said 415 days ago
Nice
Another hot chart. These are great! Tight playing, live feel, clean mix. Kudos.

Great stuff
Very much the kind of jazz I like when I'm liking jazz (as often as not, this has to do with the company I'm in....I'm forever getting in trouble with zealots of any kind). Gets a little congested and confused near the end - kinda gives it a jam feel, maybe, but I felt it reduced the piece from a 9 to a 7.5. But yes, very much the kind of music that makes people walk easier, makes the day more enjoyable. Life more bearable.

Cheers, Shaky

P.S. I'm afraid I've given up voting when anything appears with a 10 out of the box, and it makes me extra picky in my comments (and downright snotty if I don't like the piece)(people be warned)

TobinMueller said 415 days ago
More main stream
Yes, this chart begins more mainstream than it ends. When we first did this, it almost sounded like a swing version of a television show intro song. I've been trying to hip the sound up a bit without going outside the mainstream. I'm a guy whole enjoys being in the middle of congested confusion, tho. I think it dates back to when I was in college, in the chorus of The Messiah, singing the final Amen and almost going into a trance, feeling like I was in the vortex of a cosmic swirl. Been trying to recapture that moment for a long time. Controlled chaos is the jazz equivalent to power chords, an emotional high that, sometimes, is self-indulgently delicious to create.

Re: 10s out of the box - I have no control over what/when people vote. Feel free to give it what you want, whenever. Its not like I orchestrate the timing of votes in anyway... (I'm really pleased that the track has seven 10s just now, tho, and I think it may be a testimony to the balance between wild and mainstream that we reach in this tune. I don't know, who can figure voting? I like to pretend that's the reason, anyway. I know I still hear plenty of flaws.)

Brilliant!
This is so tight and crisp--I DIG it! I especially like the tutti brass riffs. The mix is perfect to my ears--well balanced. Great arranging and playing! A '10' if I've ever heard it!

guys always sound so good. since i know you i feel like I should be commenting on the organ (which is perfect BTW), but I am so blown away by the horns and how well your nephew sounds. this is stunning. sounds just right.

Excellent work, performance and recording... and it deserves the 10s. ;)

terrific sound here. Everything is well played and put together very nicely. Great ensemble here!

SmokeyVW said 415 days ago
light and fun track
i like that organ improv near the middle - where it calms down just before it builds back up into frenzy of excitement!!! but it seemed a tad brief

thanks

2:21
I usually make songs too long, sometimes way too long. This track is only 2:21. When I listen, I love its brevity, compactness. But I, too, think its going so well why stop? Its cool, in a show of 6-8 minute pieces, or tunes where everyone gets a solo and the audience has to stay in a groove forever, that we throw out this surprise ditty. Kind of shakes up the pacing. But I'm with you on this, I think the song could have gone on longer too. I get my moments later on, tho.

Sound
Sharp and clear. Everything comes through on this one. I love the big band sound :)

Didn't realize the original was from so long ago! The organ gives the whole ensemble a "bigger" sound.

The organ

Tobin did you add the organ solo after the band played ?
Can you give it more level ? I find it a bit under the horns . (I seem to be the only one though)

Great piece again anyway . Bravo !

louder organ
Thanks, I love to hear calls for more organ!

Great chart
Nice tune-great arrangement.I like the slightly chaotic ending-kind of like the "Jupiter" symphony where all of the themes overlap at the end.How long does it take you to write a chart like that? It would take me a long time.Excellent work!

absolutely love to watch/hear this live. I am always very impressed with and enjoy this level of professionalism, expertise and sheer talent.

Chart writing
I try do write a chart in 3 days, spending about 4 hours a sitting at it. I used to do it by hand, so then I'd have to write out parts too. Now I use Finale, laying down the chart in MIDI first and converting. It doesn't making it go any faster, actually, but I run thru more ideas in that time, trying out alternatives. And I've learned to not write out drum parts, just provide hits on a staff, since nothing I could ever think up sounded nearly as good as what real drummers come up with on their own.

timothy devine said 413 days ago
I love coming to this tune
There is so much great energy and the playing is top notch.

What superb writing.

I like the crispness of this version although the first version captured the live feel better...
in the long run i guess the crisp version is a better keeper.

Yowza!
This track is seriously alive. "Real" musicians wind up playing a lot more loosely to the beat than sequenced tracks, which really brings the track to life. And you have some talent here on this track.

Very nicely arranged too.

I can dig this:)

The shift in pace where the organ starts its melodic soloing was a tasty choice.

Indeed a cool jazzy tune. Impressive perfomances all around.

Hello there (that's Brit for yo!)
Tobin, this is the first time I have listened to your music. I am v. pleased that I did (limey understatement). I have lots of impertinent questions but clearly you are a busy man. But there is one I must know the answer to. Is that a simulated B3 or a real one? You have probably gathered from my stuff that it is heavily laden with my favourite instrument (of the moment). But it is a VST plug in (AZR 3, free to download and v. funky). I have toyed with the idea of buying the real thing or, to be truthful, an A100 or other spinet type which has 85% shared DNA of the B3 for a tiny fraction of the price. But the pros are so outwieghed by the cons that I haven't. But having sat at a B3 beside a full mahogany Leslie it's a difficult memory/experience to shift. A bit like piloting an aerobatic plane. A full on experience.

And now to the music. Where/how is this recorded? Are they tracks separated by time and distance? Is this home recording or something way beyond?

Whichever, it floats my boat and I shall be checking out your back catalogue, squire.

Well done and well done again!

Chas (Sir Dennis Crowther)

Love it
Man, this is good. Beautifully played, and that rich B3 sound runs through the other parts like cream in a cake. What gets me most is the arrangement. I just have to shake my head, give up thinking about it and enyoy the music, because I cannot even conceive of what process you went through to map out all those parts - and at that pace.

Deeply impressive and a very enjoyable listen.

Oh man
This is so hot. I love the way it swings and this group of players you assemble are just so tight. This organ project is my favorite set of jazz I have heard this year and I have heard my fair share doing reviews for Downbeat.
