Description This is a recording by Wonderpus of the song Everyday - previously heard here as part of aside/beside. Wonderpus is the name of the group I jam with on Thursday nights - and is also the name of the octopus pictured above. The music was recorded live to surround sound on a Zoom H2 in our practice space. The other night Dave W. (Volcanique) and I overdubbed vocals using a Samson USB mic into his MacBook. Dave plays drums, harmonica and sings lead. He also wrote the lyrics. I play rhythm guitar and sing backup. Stu M. plays bass, and John T. plays lead guitar. We played our first gig two weeks ago at the Burning Man Decompression Party at the Queens Museum here in New York City.
Lyrics Extruded. Exuded. Exploded. Unloaded.
Round and round we’re whirled.
Free flowing, blowing, glowing.
Hurled into this world.

Everyday is a new day.
Everyday.

From the start it’s up.
The door’s half shut
But what do you know?
You just go and go and go.

Everyday is a new day.
Everyday.

Find the right spot
To take your mark.
Get a fast start.
Ignite your spark.

Everyday is a new day.
Everyday.

Rage onto the scene.
What does it mean?
You laugh and you scream.
You sigh and you dream.

Everyday is a good day.
Everyday.
Everyday is a good day.
Everyday.

Alright
I've always been wondering how your jam sessions would sound like. And Everyday yet. This is cool, really makes me want to have a real band. The live sound here comes off pretty damn good!

bud said 418 days ago
Thanks Vic -
Yeah I guess you're pretty familiar with this one. Not quite the same is it?

i love peeks into the artist's other live as is occasionally posted here at mj. would love to just sit and have a cold one gooving in that practice hall one day. the tune is solid and i love the live recording of this bud...hats off...hats off

bud said 418 days ago
Much appreciated Davis
We're a ragged bunch - but we've decided to focus a bit and maybe play out a little for fun. This is the first step in putting together a myspace.

Bad Smells said 418 days ago
Sweet!
A very refreshing listen. Well played by all and the vocal was hot.
Been thinking about buying an H2......no brainer now. DL. cheers

bud said 418 days ago
The H2 is very cool - and only $200
this was recorded in the surround mode where it creates two stereo tracks - one from the pair of 90 degree mics on the front and the other from the 120 degree mics on the back. I just put it on a mic stand in the middle of our space and set a level. After that you can separate out the four tracks and play with them in GB - though there is very little separation - but EQ can assist in getting more spread into the mix.
Glad you stopped by.

:D
yeah! the live feel was well received, very cool, again a raw but not blunt feel. I would love to see you perform in a bar, doing this Hendrix kind of freaking.
Ciao, Jb

bud said 418 days ago
Thanks JB
we're trying to get that gig at the bar - till then MJ will have to do.

Peter Bauckham said 418 days ago
Really
love the live sound you have on this - even the overdubs sound like part of the same performance, which is really hard to do!

Great song. Like it a lot.

Peter

bud said 418 days ago
Thanks Peter - the live sound
is a little harsh to my ears at times - but that's a result of too much GarageBand clean space I think. I'm glad you like the vocal mix - I wanted to be as cohesive as possible.

guitapick said 418 days ago
Nice tune, Bud...
...I like the reggae break, alot. Cool touch. You guys are good. Lyrics and all...powerful stuff. Bet the gig was a blast...

...the H2 reminds me of when you'd rent rehearsal space with a real good sound board for recording. Pay extra. Pretty amazing you can get that kind of quality from that li'l thang...

paul f. page said 418 days ago
Sometimes I think...
...it would be a lot of fun to perform music like this live. I've never had the opportunity. Your group is really in sync on this number and the vocals feel very comfortable to my ears: natural and as though they were done simultaneous with the live mix. As you know, I don't write this kind of music, but I can appreciate the skill it takes to write and perform it. You guys are very good indeed.
Peace.
Paul

bud said 418 days ago
Always nice to hear from you Paul
We may come to music from different directions - but we end up in the same place. Grateful. I appreciate your comments.

Hey Bud,
Cool live jam, man. That Zoom sounds amazing. I didn't know bout the surround mode. I had a chance to use one when my bro-in-law was here a while ago and we recorded some mandolin and acoustic guitar on it. It has really nice sound! The stereo field in this recording of yours is excellent. You really get the space of it. Very trippy, like'd it. Glad to hear you are starting to "play out" w/ your band. Cool.
P

bud said 418 days ago
Thanks Philip - glad enjoyed it
The Zoom is pretty cool - I used it last night to record a friend's band. The surround mode is great for two or more people in a jam setting. I also split and duplicated the tracks and used EQ to create space.

DWL said 417 days ago
Remarkable sound for a live recording
lacks a little bottom end but not bad at all.

As has been said you've got the vocals sounding part of the actual performance rather than an overdub

Cheers

Dick

Thanks Dick
I heard more bottom in my headphones - but of course it disappeared on my speakers. Dave the drummer/lead vocalist is doing another mix - we'll see what he comes up with.

Awesome!
Great live sound Bud! I concur with Feter's "Young grungie" comparison, though I also detect a hint of Pink Floyd minty freshness...

I hope there are more like this on the way! "Wonderpus" rules!

Be well men!

bud said 416 days ago
Thanks Mike
Live is fraught with foibles, but fun. Glad you stopped by

Oh man
I wish I was there for this. How I long to get out of this backward shit hole called florida. You guys sound raw live and great!!!

bud said 413 days ago
Hey Tim - thanks for the complment
How far are you from Bob? You guys should get a live thing together. Wonderpus only gets together a couple times a month - though we try for every Thursday. It's taken us three years to become confident enough to play out.

Ibstrat said 413 days ago
Has
that Neil Young-Pearl Jam vibe for sure.I haven't played out with a rock band in a long time-this makes me want to do it.You guys play with lots of conviction.Excellent.

mudmen said 413 days ago

In a cover over by the Dodge
I guess this is as close to a real garageband as it gets. Raw, from the heart, and still polished enough to be actually listenable.

Now, where's that guitar that goes "ree-tee-tee-tee-teedleleedle-dee"?

Victor.

bud said 412 days ago
Garage Band - yeah I guess you're right
We couldn't play any different if we tried. Hell - half the time we can't even sound like ourselves. Got lucky this time I guess. Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for stopping by.

Wondering
I've been wondering how good that H2 sounds in situations like this. It's awfully good! Nice stereo separation, and good sound overall.

Sounds a lot like Led Zeppelin. I used to have "Houses Of The Holy" on cassette, about a million years ago, and this reminds me of that great old tape.

Your band has a great unified feel to their performance. Sounds like you rehearse quite a bit.

Vocal effects really catch my ear -- overdubbing and various echo effects.

Love the last note, with the guitar sustaining.

bud said 411 days ago
Nice hearing from you John
I can't praise the H2 highly enough. It's performed really well in a variety of circumstances. Wonderpus spent two years jamming and improvising before we finally decided to write and record. During that time a lot of song ideas were developed - but this is our first attempt at solidifying a structure and creating an actual artifact. We're doing it now because we're interested in playing out - and to do so we need a demo on myspace.
I love Houses of the Holy - very flattered.

This sounds fantastic! It must be great to play with a band of different personalities and talents. Playing for a crowd? It sounds like you are on quite an adventure.

Just awesome. It has a haunting quality to it which could see me putting it on when I feel blue which is often. Good darts.
