Description Not a new song. As today is Rememberance Day, this seemed appropriate. I borrowed a section from 'Reply to In Flanders Fields' by John Mitchel for the last verse. My Grandfather always attended the service at the Royal Albert Hall, and my son will be attending the annual Scouts parade and service today. I'd like to re-record some of the parts of this, as it's a little bit clumsy here and there, but for the time being...
Lyrics Fields of red, bend in the breeze
One moment you’re here, and then you’re gone
A generation, wasted away
Here one moment, then gone another day

Chorus
What would you think, if you were here today
Victorian splender, replaced with urban decay

What was it all for, who really knows
As we all watch, the poppy fields grow
Out of sadness they seemed to appear
It’s how we remember, year after year

Chorus

And so the poppies still gently blow,
Between the crosses, row on row
For freedom's cause, of you who lie
In the sky still the larks fly high

Nice Poetry
Peter and fair comment too... I'm pleased that a few people here have posted for Remembrance Day, albeit from slightly different view points, if it's only to keep the memory of those who've passed, alive. I like the clarity you always get in your performances too, both vocally and instrumentally, regards M

Thanks
My comments seem to got a bit muddled up! So Mike, thank you - glad you liked it. Maurice, your poetry is beautiful and very moving.

Kind regards
Peter

Worthy!
Really nice job Peter. The tune conveys right well the sentiment expressed in the lyrics. Yes....remember!

Be well!

Peter Bauckham said 424 days ago
Thanks M
I was going to post this a year ago but for some reason I didn't. I too am pleased that others have posted works for Rememberance Day. I hope that the younger generation will remember in years to come.

great song Peter
great lyrics as well. Glad you got around to posting and a very true message.

also dug the REM style guitars.

Peter Bauckham said 424 days ago
Thanks Vic
I'm glad I got 'round to posting it. Yes, the guitars on this one are very REM - perhaps I should have considered it for the LSP!

Very
lovely song Peter that paints a picture in the mind.
Cheers
Len

Peter Bauckham said 424 days ago
Thanks Len
It's always nice when a song creates a picture. On my drive to work, there are some fields that, for a week or two, get covered in bright red Poppies - my initial inspiration for this song came from seeing those.

Thanks for your comments. Peter

man peter
so glad u posted this now...i despise the waging of wars but those who go to duty must be remembered. thanks my friend

Peter Bauckham said 424 days ago
I agree
The least we can do is remember. Sometimes I just wonder what someone in who fought in the 1914-18 war would make of today's world. Thanks for your kind words. Peter

Moving stuff
I've written a stage play (published) and a novel (unpublished) about the first world war so it's a subject I've immersed myself in on a very deep level, although really it's a horror almost beyond imagining. I have poppies growing in my garden which I collected from a former British trench on the Somme ... my own miniature garden of remembrance which regenerates itself year after year.

Very sweet melody and nice guitar work here Peter, which conveys the pathos very well.

Peter Bauckham said 423 days ago
Thanks
Rebsie - I really appreciate your comments. I remember reading that you had written a play - I hope you get your novel published. I thought it was time I posted something a little different. Thanks again, Peter

I can see a WWI poppy field.Sounds like a song you could play live. Do you ever play live? I have one thing to say. Its that the bass is very very low.over than that. A great tune!!

Peter Bauckham said 422 days ago
Thanks
I glad this create an image. There isn't very much in the way of bass on the recording - I hope to add a bass guitar when funds allow! I did give a bit a lift around 60hz when I mastered it but I guess overall the recording is a little 'lightweight'. Thanks for listening and I'm pleased that you enjoyed the song. Peter

Reconsider drums
You capture your guitars and vocals with wonderful clarity. The cymbals, however, are used with obvious MIDIness, especially coming as they do on emphasized beats, not in a way a real drummer would with this sort track, I think. The snare and BD are very upfront, too, perhaps too much so, and could be sent back with a tad more reverb. This is an intimate tune and the machine-like exactness of the MIDI drumming detracts from your personal approach, in my ears. Very nice recording, however.

Peter Bauckham said 422 days ago
I would
tend to agree with you regarding the drums, which are a loop from my drum machine, so there's not much scope for editing them - perhaps they are a little upfront and maybe could be a little softer - although they fitted in quite well with the set of songs I was recording at the time which I guess is why they ended up this way.

Thank you for your constructive comments - this is a song I plan to revisit sometime. All the best, Peter

Really nice song
Hey I dig this song a lot! Hi quality composition!
Many of the musical twists reminds me a lot of the work of Swedish songwriters, for example Ulf Dageby and Per Gessle. The latter is one of Swedens most celebrated artists and songwriters. But I guess his work isn't well known outside of Sweden. (Well he was also in the group Roxette, but in this group he has another musical language. Your work reminds me of the songs he's done in the Swedish language).

Strangely enough I've only listened to one of your songs before. I am glad I came back to you, and am now faving you so I can get mail notations as soon as you create something!

Johannes
Thank you for dropping by and for your kind words - I really appreciate it. I'm only familiar with Per Gessle's work with Roxette (who were quite big over here - and I do rather like some of their power ballads). I believe you sent me a message but, for some reason, I can't access any mail? I'll keep trying. Thanks once again.

Kind regards
Peter

somber
Somber and sobering.
Sadness expressed in a wonderful way. Caught the mood of this overall feeling with that steady guitar and repeating figure.

Good work on this one.

Guinness!
Thanks for your comments. I see you've sent me a note - I'm having problems accessing my mailbox (new or old messages) - and can't reply to forum posts either - all used to work OK. I guess you're referring to 'Cryin' in Me Guinness' - I don't have any sound card at work but will be listening to when I at home later.

Thanks again
Peter

Hi again
Hi again. The MJ mail system doesn't work on Safari right now, hasn't been working for at least a week I think. A temporary solution is to use Firefox if you want to read your mails (as well as give replies in the forums).

I like the mix
I like this mix it feels much more open/raw this way.
Nice job!

Peter Bauckham said 420 days ago
Thanks
for your comments and I'm glad you liked the mix. I don't tend to do too much remixing - I'm terrible at labeling the tracks. There are always parts you would like to re-do -given the time!

Thanks again, Peter

Very
well written song. You have a very expressive voice.I don't know much about production but the feeling is there.Excellent song!

Peter Bauckham said 418 days ago
Thank you
I appreciate you dropping by and listening. From memory, this was the first vocal take and I've always been quite happy with it. I'm especially pleased that the feeling comes across, as I feel that's the most important part. I think, production wise, that you can spend an awful amount of time 'tweaking' and I just don't have the time available and ultimately, if the performance is good and the recording clear enough, that has to do.

Thanks once again, Peter.

bud said 418 days ago
Great post Peter
Excellent lyrics and I like the production just as it is - very impressive actually. Your vocals are splendid.

Peter Bauckham said 418 days ago
Hi Bud
Thank you! There are a couple of things that I'd redo (if I had the time) but I think overall it fits together. It's always nice to get positive comments on a vocal performance as it's so hard to be objective when you're listening to yourself.

All the best
Peter

Intoxicating
great sound, hooks my ear immediately. I was playing along before the second verse. Very Nice. I'm a nurse at a Veteran's Hospital; they miss their brothers, they carry the tears over all the years. Good Job.

Beautiful sentiment
and very well expressed in the lyrics. The images you evoke in the lyrics (while sad) are vivid and powerful. I love the idea of how a veteran of WW1 would view the world today. A very thought-provoking approach to the subject. Love the guitar sound and playing on this - there is a mournful mood there (whether from the notes, the playing, or the sound, I don't know). Nice clear sound on the production, and lovely vocal. Very nicely done. Sorry it's taken me so long to get here! Peace.

Not too clumsy at all. Nicely done, wonderful arrangement an delivery. Lyrics are both sincere/emotive and poetic without a whiff of triteness.

For the time being, and beyond that...
This is a strong lyric and you have a clean, clear way of singing, as if you know exactly what you want to do there. I can hear the accent and it way classy! It doesn't seem that we'll ever learn a better solution to conflict than war. Thanks for remembering.

Peter Bauckham said 204 days ago
Nice
to see you found this song - It's important to remember although sadly I doubt that lessons will ever be learnt. Thanks for the comments on my accent - I like the idea of 'classy'.
