Description This started off as a song about my next door neighbour (I'd sooner have Rebsie's Leafblower - I have the angle grinder) but it has ended up as a general song about British culture (so perhaps some of the lyrics might not make a lot of sense to the international MacJammers)!
Lyrics
Not gonna drive a 4x4
Put stone horse heads around my door
No waggon wheels here as you can see
Well I’m not one of the many

I don’t conform
I’m not a clone
I’m an individual
I have a mind of my own

No bluetooth phone stuck to my ear
Gangster rap I don’t wanna hear
I don’t follow trends in technology
Well I’m not one of the many

I don’t conform
I’m not a clone
I’m an individual
I have a mind of my own

No Burbury scarf, no Hugo Boss
No cheap gold chains from Argos
White trainers really are not for me
Well I’m not one of the many

I don’t conform
I’m not a clone
I’m an individual
I have a mind of my own

No Red Bull drink, no changing gum
Junk food always makes me glum
Such a state of apathy
Well I’m not one of the many

I don’t conform
I’m not a clone
I’m an individual
I have a mind of my own
I have a mind of my own
I have a mind of my own

Great stuff Peter
The lyrics make sense to me! Thick old chains from Argos indeed.

Great driving riff you've got going here and a compulsive melody. And the words are superb. Very well done. :)

Rebsie said 431 days ago

PS I do sympathise about the angle grinder.

Peter Bauckham said 431 days ago
Hello Rebsie
Thanks for your comments - I wasn't sure if perhaps this was too British or not. Glad you like lyrics - that's my favourite line in the song BTW... My wife came up with the Hugo Boss to rhyme with Argos.

Conformity sucks!
Excellent song! The mix sounds fantastic! So many of the things you mention are also true here in the States- like hearing the rap music from a car (it's usually an SUV, too) that's 10 back from the car you're in. Very nice song indeed- catchy riffs/melody.

Peter Bauckham said 430 days ago
Thanks!
Good to hear this is a little bit more international that perhaps I thought. I'm really pleased with the sound quality on this one - just wish I could remember what I did!

nice driving rocker Peter. Media has made sheep of way to many people. Just be you.

Peter Bauckham said 430 days ago
Absolutely Vic
Just be yourself! There's a track on an old punk album by The Varukers called 'Don't Conform' which I was inspired by(although for years I thought they were singing Duncan Four) - I guess I'm a bit of an (old) rocker at heart!

Ha ha!
The most fun I've had here in awhile Peter! It's good to hear you rock out!

Love the way you have mixed those blissfully crunchy guitars (I could learn something from you here).

I may need an interpreter for some of the idiomatic lyrics but I understand the spirit of this tune right well brother.

A big, heartfelt bravo to you for this one. Enjoyed it IMMENSELY!

Be well!

it's always great to hear from you. I really pleased that you enjoyed this - it's been knocking around as a (very) rough demo for ages. I spent a while getting the guitar sound (but of course have no idea what I did)! Even better that this gave you a good laugh! Peter

lengold said 431 days ago
Great
fun song Peter. Nice to hear something sounding so English too. Excellent musicianship/production.
Cheers
Len

Peter Bauckham said 430 days ago
Thanks Len
As there are not too many Brits on MacJams I like to try and keep the flag flying...haha! Thanks for your comments - I'm pleased with how this one turned out. Peter

lavalamp said 431 days ago
Really rocking
Rings of "Summertime Blues" a bit. Surprised that you would rock out like this. What's wrong with Gangster Rap Home Boy.
Agree with Len.........very English, I do say.
Dave

Peter Bauckham said 431 days ago
I'm a bit fan of
Summertime Blues... Marc Bolan's version especially. Yes this is very British (I think most of my songs tend to be - but this more so). It's nice to rock a little. Cheers for listening. Peter

davisamerica said 431 days ago
right then peter
this statside macjammer could relate to lyrics....but what a rocker friend!!
am very glad U do not conform cos this is way cool!! nice production as well!

Peter Bauckham said 430 days ago
Cheers
for listening. Glad the lyrics made sense. I don't do many rock numbers and it's always nice to do something a little bit different. This song has been sitting on the back-burner for well over a year so it's great to have it finished at long last. All the best, Peter

Moviz said 430 days ago
What I love
about your lyrics is that they're about real life and have a story and a make me smile because we can empathise with your subjects. Great beat and instrumentation here... Rock and Roll is back LOL. Great song for getting them on the dance floor at a party, regards M

Peter Bauckham said 430 days ago
Yeah
Rock and Roll is back (but I don't know how long for). You're right, my lyrics are very much real life (as I see it) and of course are with tongue firmly in cheek! The arrangement just fell into place - a simple riff (which suits my clumsy playing). Glad it made you smile - that's just great - thanks.

Riffing!
Good rocking track Peter...I think is one of your best ones yet. Great guitar sound and production on this. Maybe you should enter LSP track as The Only Ones?
Steve

Peter Bauckham said 430 days ago
Hi Steve
Always nice to hear from you. I really like the guitar sound on this - I did spend a bit of time on it because I find it really difficult to get just the right amount of distortion - there's a thin dividing line between just right and a mess - perhaps I need to upgrade the pick-ups on my guitar - but I think it's about right. I keep looking at that LSP project... I think you should do a Richard Thompson sound-a-like or even Leonard Cohen if you get Mysti to sing back-up! Thanks for your support - I really appreciate it. Thick gold chains from Argos....
.. genius Peter, sheer genius.

Boy did I chuckle.

Terrific arangement.

Paddy
nice to hear this gave you a good chuckle - I always worry that I might offend with my lyrics. Many of my songs are simply social observations (in a Mike Leigh play sort of way)! I've had this song in a 'rough' state for ages - I tend to find that if I leave something for a while, I'm terrible at going back and finishing - but I'm glad I did this time.

All the best, Peter.

Great Song
Clever lyrics, great singing. Lots of fun to listen to. You did a wonderful job here. I am so glad that you have a mind of your own. No, Don't conform, no need to. You are just right and very talented! Many thanks for sharing.

Thank you Gail
for your very kind words - I'm delighted that you enjoyed this. I've just been listening to your latest - which is beautiful. Thanks again. Peter

Great production
Love the song - I was trying to watch something on dvd this morning while I was eating a sausage sandwhich (just after all the health experts in the news have been moaning on about cancer). It wouldnt play any dvd's except for 'Made In Britain' - Tim Roths debut film by David Leland. If you set your hair on fire and then re-recorded the vocals, this song could easily be a track for that film.(I wouldnt advise actually doing it).God save John Lyden.Much enjoyed.Cheers!

It would be
a very small fire! By I don't think i'll try it... Thanks for popping by and listening. I must watch 'Made in England' sometime - I don't have much staying power for films as I fall asleep within minutes of sitting down although I did watch 'Abigail's Party' earlier!

All the best, Peter.

Cool Rock!
Some very nice guitar riffs here! The lyrics are very good! and VERY clever! the song makes some 'local' references but the concept is universal. I'm from Brazil and your lyrics makes perfect sense in our society too. Excellent job!

Really Like this song
This reminds me of the Kinks. I like the chorus. The whole song is very catchy. I am definitely a new fan.

dajama said 277 days ago
Nice song
and filled with great, clever humor. I love the picture you paint of your neighbor, filled with lovely telling details (the wagon wheels and stone horse heads cracked me up!) and damning list of brands. Nice rockin' feel to this that is a little unexpected from you, but it works very well. Good guitar sound (love the guitar fills), solid drums with a great driving beat, and a good vocal performance. Your voice has a sweetness to it even when ripping into someone! Nicely done, my friend. Peace.

asconejar said 224 days ago
tsada
unmistakably british music and tempo. Your voice deceived my eyes by looking at your picture! you sounds like 20 years younger than your picture suggest! very good mix. Congrats.

Hooky and fun
There's nothing better than declaring: I won't follow, because I am myself! - or something to that effect. The gitars are hooky and your singing approaches Pete Shelly of the Buzzcocks here. I'm singling alone with this one.
