Description I started noodling around and didn't realize at the time, until I started to record that this was going to be a slow tune.

The story goes that things can be going along nicely then you get blind sided. Financial or health. Just maybe there is that unseen thing that likes to get its jolly's.
Lyrics Sandman

please be careful
they sedate your minds
when you're not looking
sneaking from behind

sandman delivers dreams and nightmares
please arrest this man he over heard the plan

keep yourself together
they unravel your life
faceless little demons
smiling at your frowns

sandman dreaming how to wear you down
gray stains black and white your life

wake up this morning
in a bed of sand
dream police showed
say they got their man

sandman delivers dreams and nightmares
please arrest this man he over heard the plan

Time for you to get a complete set...
...of Neil Gaiman...

This seems in the new MacJams Paranoia tradition, and just in time for Halloween...

I really like the vocal interlude bits...

I'm starting to have this fantasy, though, of you turning out a totally Vic Holman tune that's unplugged...Just to hear to what that would sound like...

Crazy, I know...

Ed

Vic Holman said 436 days ago
originally
i was going to write about the moon. Neil beat me on that one.
I thought since it was about halloween time. why not play on it.

I keep thinking about doing a acoustic piece either originally (and stop before I go to far) or maybe revisit an old one. maybe your not to crazy after all, Ed.

Sandman
Great song structure . a very remarkable lead part
with the strings sound at behind ..loved your singin
here as well .welldone my friend !!

Vic Holman said 436 days ago
Thanks Feter
Lots and lots of chords

I originally was going to use keyboard strings. but these are actually two guitars using a volume pedal with delay with echo. sounds pretty close,

Thanks!

bud said 436 days ago
I love how this one
slipped over the deep end in the middle. Cool series of harmonies and chord progressions. I still think it's time for a song of all bridges. No verses - no choruses - just bridge to bridge to bridge. If any cam do it - you can.

Vic Holman said 436 days ago
well i did put two bridges
together in the middle section. And kept the verses real short. I'm getting there. hehe!

Sandman
Great Song Vic....very haunting...

Have you ever heard the Pogues after Shane MacGowan got kicked out...their replacement singer, Spider Stacy, has a very similar voice to yours in this song....I love it!

The Sandman dreaming part is very cool

Vic Holman said 436 days ago
In time for halloween
haunting is a good description

I remember the band with the original singer. I knew he had a course voice. I don't think I ever caught them with the replacement though.

Thanks much!

said 436 days ago
'bout time....
seriously, this is just one more very cool song from your sweatshop of music making (OK, not that serious).

Great sound separation and effects buoying this tune... really luscious guitar work.

Your lyrics are really good... images and pictures, very in keeping with the dreamy feel of the song. (John meets George in this tune)

And the message... a good one, well intended and well to be understood.

carry on....

Vic Holman said 436 days ago
must stay on schedule
it's amazing what you can do in a slow song. A lot easier to spread out i find.

Lyrically i thought a nice take for halloween and mostly those little surprises, like : that's going to cost how much??? Never seems to elude me.

said 436 days ago
Plaintive....
...and a just little unsettling!

Nice work Vic. Main melody is rather catchy. Really nice guitar work. Effective and judicious use of the synth. Nice separation in the mix. Two thumbs (and a big toe) up!

Be well!

Vic Holman said 436 days ago
gremlins and others
slow songs really open the space. so it gave me some room to let things stand out a bit more.

No synths. I was going to originally use some. This is 2 guitars with a volume pedal with delay and echo. I use it from time to time. easier then figure keyboard chord patterns especially on these chords.

said 436 days ago
Wow!
You had me fooled! So basically what you have done here is used a guitar to synthesize a synth! You never cease to amaze me brother!

Be well!

lengold said 436 days ago
It doesn't
have to be halloween for this song to work. I think that your sandman has visited me often - in fact I think he's due a visit now.
Great song and expertly played and produced.
Cheers
Len

murphy's law
I know when things are going to smoothly. that's when i get nervous. Either the more money you earn, the more costly the repair bill. Or just those unexpected things that's not to funny at the time.

jiguma said 436 days ago
now that's BIG!
Great guitar sounds Vic (in your inimitable style), and I really like the vocal on this too. One of many amazing songs I've heard tonight - no nits (wait a minute, I found one where the rhythm stumbles before the solo - or was that just me?), just love it.

Time for a CD I think Vic!!

Cheers,
Neil

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
Thanks Neil
I counted two mistakes, but who's counting.

I managed to pull this one together with a few less guitars than normal. I'm finding slow songs can really open the space up nicely. Not that I'm going to do all slow songs for now on mind you.

I actually think this is a personal favorite of mine so far.

jgurner said 435 days ago
Okay....
...now I'm afraid to go to sleep...

Such a great moody and dreamy feel. It really kind of brings in the creepy feeling like a cold fog rolling in. Perfect.

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
Hey Joseph
The sandman ain't so cute anymore, huh?

I wrote the lyrics after the music and i kept thinking dreamy, but a little chilly all the same. so sandman with golashes and a scarf.

said 435 days ago
Hmmm...
Excellent production as usual, neat arppeggios, I admire the compassion of the songwriter/singer in this...when you speak to the weak, meek and downtrodden then you know you have something substantially good filled with goodness...great song Vic, you open your heart in this and I can see it burn with kindness.

said 435 days ago
hehe
...or am I reading to much into this?

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
he he
hey Tom, it reads a few different ways. One is Murphy's Law. Another of a catch 22. and of course as you state. i scratched out quite a few lines trying not to be to specific, but enough to give you ideas....or nightmares. I'm not sure which

guitapick said 435 days ago
Damn...
...you're good...

Deepest respect...

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
Thanks Bob
actually you got to bad before going good. I've been naughty many times. and no bagpipes here either!

said 434 days ago
Halloween - Cheap Trick! :-)
Ha! Ha! :-) Hey, Bro! Love this! Send the dream police my way - didn't sleep at all last night - the pull of the moon, the certainty of tides, cast your spell over me - but send me a sweet dream. :-)

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
Hey Carole
well I can't control the sandman nor can the dream police (they get inside of my head). I'm not even sure how the idea for the lyrics came to me. oh, wait...the sandman does exist.

just think happy thoughts, the dreams tend to follow

said 434 days ago

Yeah I've wondering when you where going to get around to your next song. But, I'm sure school is taking up a lot of your time.

I was actually working on another faster song, but put it aside to work on this one. I should slow down.

Here we go again
struggling for things I haven't said before.

Perpendicular.... I haven't said that before.

Wonderful stuff Vic.

Cheers

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
Hi Dick
peroidicity. I'm building my vobabulary too.

I was pretty thrilled how the weird vocal mix turned out. I've tried it before but ended up tossing it out. finally got something

Moviz said 434 days ago
Reminds me...
a bit of 'The Crying Game' in the 60's with it's 'silvery' sounds with a somnambulistic feel. Nice vocal on top of a nice tune, regards M

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
thanks Maurice
the real slivery sound is the guitar with a leslie speaker plug-in that really added the sine on this I think. I didn't realize how slow it really was going to be until I started recording. Sure gives it a somber feel.

TEXASFEEL said 434 days ago
Oh yeah
Another great tune. The progression and chord selection is magnificent. The psychedelic vibe and screaming leads are an added bonus. Thanks for sharing.

Vic Holman said 434 days ago
This is one of those
when your done and listen back to it and wonder how did i do this. a lot of luck I'm quessing.

I had a lead piece at the beginning at first, but dumped it. I thought it was to much to soon.

mikkinylund said 434 days ago
Wow!
I am floored! Did always like your music. You have a KILLER here - this is... You know what it is! ;)

Thanks Mikki
I really didn't think of it until just now. Radio-floyd!

I actually copped part of a line from Kharma Police "arrest this man" Must of been in the back of my mind the whole time. Nice call, I love both bands.

Alannah said 433 days ago
Vic ............ (tor)?????
... I cannot emphasize enough how much I have heard such an enormous vocal "growth" from you in the past few months !!! truly ! As I no little or less than little about the whole music making or mixing business I cannot comment on that end of things ... but this tune was a nice listen late on a friday night !

Vic Holman said 432 days ago
Thanks Alannah
I'm trying. though I have a limited note range. there must be some secret that only you and a few others know on how to do it right.

Ibstrat said 432 days ago
Creative
Just shows what a cool song you can come up with when you have a great ear.You must have a good ear to come up with that chord progression.I kept trying to figure out where it was going-I was not successful.Ended on D major-brilliant.You also have a great voice and I love the way the acoustic and electric guitars are mixed together.Excellent song!

Vic Holman said 431 days ago
normally....
what i do (most of the time) is think in sections as opposed to a overall song. That can free up the whole process beyond the verse chorus formula.

Thanks Mark.

peacepiano said 431 days ago
Song
Fine example of first rate song writing and performing. You use the vocal echos well. You balance all the instruments smartly, producing a professional sound.

Thanks
Bill

Vic Holman said 431 days ago
Thanks Bill
recording the tracks and coming up with the parts came together pretty quick. I will usually take a week to mix. (not a solid week, that would be crazy) throughout the week.

rjamadeus said 431 days ago

this is just simply KILLER !!! i was going to post a song about the moon ( sad sad moon ) also. damn that neil, i'll have to wait to post it
anyway love this tune
rj

Vic Holman said 431 days ago

i use to have a "moon" song posted here. but i took it off in a spring cleaning mood a year and a half ago. thinking I was going to fix it and modify it some. never did get around to doing it though.

Thanks for enjoying it. It's one of my personal fav's.

Ya know, this would be a good closer. If I ever got around to doing a CD that is.

I'm glad you are considering the Lost Song Tracks project. should be fun!
